The Dutch isn’t who Bergsma and Bowe have to be worried about IMO. Miho Takagi hasn’t been beaten this year.

I forgot about her. Haven't kept up as much with the speed skating world this past year. She is definitely phenomenal.

All times in PST

Day 3 (February 12th)

Alpine Skiing

Women's Giant Slalom - 5:15pm

Team USA

Tricia Mangan

Megan McJames

Mikaela Shiffrin

Resi Stiegler

Recap

JK LOL TOO MUCH WIND...I'm sensing a theme here.

Biathlon

Women's 10km Pursuit - 2:10am

Team USA

Emily Dreissigacker - 47th

Men's 12.5km Pursuit - 4:00am

Team USA

Tim Burke - 17th

Lowell Bailey - 32nd

Leif Nordgren - 50th

Recap

There is some good news with those numbers, shockingly. Tim Burke had a great race. He started 47th in this race, 1:48 behind the lead. 17th place going into this race was over a minute closer. Good result, hopefully it carries into the Individual.

Figure Skating

Team Event(Men's Free, Ladies' Free, Free Dance)  - 5:00pm

Team USA

Adam Rippon - 3rd

Mirai Nagasu - 2nd

Maia Shibutani - 2nd

Alex Shibutani - 2nd

Recap

Considering that we didn't win a single event, we did damn great. 3rd place is a medal and sets us up nicely for the individual events.

Freestyle Skiing

Men's Moguls Qual 2, Finals - 2:30am

Team USA

Casey Andringa - 5th

Troy Murphy - 17th

Emerson Smith - 23rd

Bradley Wilson - 18th

Recap

Well, geez. 1 step forward and 2 steps back. Good result for Andringa, really happy for him. Only 22 years old, 5th is great. But no one else in the top 15? That's kind of a shame.

Luge

Women's Runs 1 & 2 - 2:50am

Team USA

Summer Britcher - 9th

Erin Hamlin - 5th

Emily Sweeney - 15th

Recap

Hamlin had a great first two runs, well within striking distance. Britcher had a pretty poor first run when she hit the wall out of curve 9, but her second run was stellar. Needs more like that if she wants a top 5. Sweeney has a pretty bad 2nd run, 23rd in that run. Unfortunate.

Ski Jumping

Women's Normal Hill - 3:35am

Team USA

Nita Englund - 31st

Sarah Hendrickson - 19th

Abby Ringquist - 29th

Recap

We got a top 20, so that's something. Not unexpected, though.

Snowboard

Women's Slopestyle Finals - 5:00pm

Team USA

Jamie Anderson - 1st

Jessika Jenson - 5th

Hailey Langland - 6th

Julia Marino - 11th

Recap

I'm going to leave my opinions on how this event was run out of this. Look, these women did spectacular given the conditions. No reason to not be proud of all 4.

Women's Halfpipe Qualification - 8:30pm

Team USA

Kelly Clark - Q

Arielle Gold - Q

Chloe Kim - Q

Maddie Mastro - Q

Recap

There are 12 athletes left in this event. They are 4 of them. And the 17 year olds are dominating this field. Freaking awesome.

Speed Skating

Women's 1500m - 4:30am

Team USA

Heather Bersgsma - 8th

Brittany Bowe - 5th

Mia Manganello - 22nd

Recap

Wow. Ireen Wust did the Ireen Wust thing. Miho Takagi did amazing as well. 7 tenths later, you have Leenstra in 3rd. Bowe missed a medal by just .28 seconds, while van Beek(4th) was off by a hundredth. Just wow.

All times in PST

Day 4 (February 13th)

Alpine Skiing

Men's Combined:

Downhill - 6:30pm

Slalom - 10:00pm

Team USA

Bryce Bennett

Ryan Cochran-Siegle

Jared Goldberg
Ted Ligety

Thoughts/Background Information

Ted Ligety is back, and this will be a real test to see how good he still is. Bryce Bennett impressed a lot in the downhill training. However, at this rate, are we going to get any Alpine Skiing events?

Cross-Country Skiing

Men and Ladies Sprint - 12:30am

Team USA

Erik Bjornsen

Simi Hamilton

Logan Hanneman

Andy Newell

Sadie Bjornsen

Sophie Caldwell

Jessie Diggins

Ida Sargent

Thoughts/Background Information

I'm excited for this. We have some phenomenal women's cross-country sprinters who have done really well. I really hope that they show up and do great.

Ice Hockey - Womens'

:USA United States of America vs Olympic Athletes from Russia :IOC - 4:10am

[I don't want to type all of their names]

Thoughts/Background Information

OAR was shut out by Canada in game 1. USA had a pretty decent outing against Finland. I think this game will go easily to the USA.

Luge

Women's Runs 3 & 4 - 2:30am

Team USA

Summer Britcher

Erin Hamlin

Emily Sweeney

Thoughts/Background Information

Hamlin and Britcher are the only ones still left in competition, really. I hope they are able to put together 2 great runs and get a podium!

Short Track Speed Skating

Women's 500m Final, Men's 1000m Heats, Men's 5000m Relay  - 2:00am

Team USA

Maame Biney

John-Henry Krueger

J.R. Celski

J.R. Celski

Ryan Pivirotto

John-Henry Krueger

Thomas Hong

Aaron Tran

Thoughts/Background Information

Biney got second in her heat, making me worried for her quarterfinal, where the top 2 will advance, same for the semi. She is in a tough QF, with Fan Kexin and Han Yutong. Krueger and Celski should make it out of their heats, and the Relay guys want to make it into the A Final.

Snowboard

Women's Halfpipe Final - 5:00pm

Team USA

Kelly Clark

Arielle Gold

Chloe Kim

Maddie Mastro

Thoughts/Background Information

Repeating what I said yesterday: Honestly, these 4 are so good that I will be shocked if they don't win. Just, so s good.

Men's Halfpipe Qualification - 8:30pm

Team USA

Ben Ferguson

Chase Josey

Jake Pates

Shaun White

Thoughts/Background Information

This is going to be a good one. Ferguson put up a 95. Josey put of a 90. Pates didn't get a solid run, Shaun White is Shaun White. Basically, should get at least 2, probably 3 to qualify.

Speed Skating

Men's 1500m - 3:00am

Team USA

Shani Davis

Brian Hansen

Joey Mantia

Thoughts/Background Information

Mantia is our medal favorite here, as he is 3rd in the World Cup standings. But Denis Yuskov has been perfect this season, so he is the clear favorite in the event.

Day 4 (February 13th)

Alpine Skiing

Men's Combined:

Downhill(Actually a Super G)

Slalom

Team USA

Bryce Bennett - 17th

Ryan Cochran-Siegle - DNF

Jared Goldberg - 36th
Ted Ligety - 5th

Recap

Good result. Not great, but good. Really good given the circumstances, and I'm content with that.

Cross-Country Skiing

Men and Ladies Sprint

Team USA

Erik Bjornsen - Quarterfinal

Simi Hamilton - Quarterfinal

Logan Hanneman - 42nd

Andy Newell - 37th

Sadie Bjornsen - Quarterfinal

Sophie Caldwell - Semifinal

Jessie Diggins - 6th

Ida Sargent - 33rd

Recap

So close! Diggins made it to the final, but couldn't get a medal. Still, 6th is pretty great, and they still have the team sprint, which is in their much better freestyle style.

Ice Hockey - Womens'

:USA United States of America 5 vs  0 Olympic Athletes from Russia :IOC

[I don't want to type all of their names]

Recap

Perfect. 2-0 so far, with Canada to go. They are into the semifinals regardless of result, and are setting themselves up nicely for the usual USA-Canada Gold Medal Match.

Luge

Women's Runs 3 & 4

Team USA

Summer Britcher - 19th

Erin Hamlin - 6th

Emily Sweeney - DNF

Recap

Good runs from these 3 ladies. Britcher couldn't navigate that curve 9 exit, but other than that, she was beautiful going down the track. Hamlin was the model of consistency, which is so hard to do in Luge. Sweeney didn't have her best race, just hoping that she is okay after a really bad crash.

Short Track Speed Skating

Women's 500m Final, Men's 1000m Heats, Men's 5000m Relay

Team USA

Maame Biney - Quarterfinal

John-Henry Krueger - Qualified

J.R. Celski - Eliminated

J.R. Celski - B Final

Ryan Pivirotto - B Final

John-Henry Krueger - B Final

Thomas Hong - B Final

Aaron Tran - B Final

Recap

That was a bad day. Aside from Krueger winning his heat, only 3rd and 4th place finishes for the Americans, which is pretty disappointing. Definitely need a boost to our speed skating team.

Snowboard

Women's Halfpipe Final

Team USA

Kelly Clark - 4th

Arielle Gold - 3rd

Chloe Kim - 1st

Maddie Mastro - 12th

Recap

Repeating what I said yesterday: Honestly, these 4 are so good that I will be shocked if they don't win. Well, they did! Chloe Kim was stellar, Arielle Gold was incredible, even Kelly Clark was superb! Maddie Mastro was the only one who didn't get a clean run in, and she's only 17 years old, so she'll be back.

Men's Halfpipe Qualification

Team USA

Ben Ferguson - 4th

Chase Josey - 7th

Jake Pates - 8th

Shaun White - 1st

Recap

Great work from these guys, and Shaun White is as good as ever! Really can't say much more other than Hell Yeah!

Speed Skating

Men's 1500m

Team USA

Shani Davis - 19th

Brian Hansen - 15th

Joey Mantia - 8th

Recap

Another rough speed skating event. Honestly, pretty poor for these guys results-wise. Hopefully we get something in the 1000 or 500.

All times in PST

Day 5 (February 14th)

Alpine Skiing

Women's Slalom: 5:15pm/8:45pm

Team USA

Alice Merryweather

Megan McJames

Mikaela Shiffrin
Resi Stiegler

Thoughts/Background Information

Good news everyone! We actually skiied yesterday! Hopefully we repeat that grand feat and see Shiffrin try to defend her gold from Sochi!

Biathlon

Women's 15km Individual - 3:05am

Team USA

Susan Dunklee

Clare Egan

Emily Dreissigacker

Madeleine Phaneuf

Joanne Reid

Thoughts/Background Information

This is my absolute favorite Biathlon event, as it is the most grueling and demanding. Staggered start, best time start to finish wins. Miss a shot, 1 minute added to your time. Probably won't medal in this either, but this event can surprise.

Curling

Men's

:USA United States of America vs South Korea :KOR - 4:05pm

Team USA

John Shuster

Tyler George

Matt Hamilton

John Landsteiner

Team South Korea

Kim Chang Min

Seong Se Hyeon

Kim Min Chan

Lee Ki Bok

Thoughts/Background Information

Game 1 for the Shuster rink, let's hope they get a W! They are coming into this in a pretty good spot, with some good results in major tournaments. High expectations for the now 3-time US representative.

Women's

:USA United States of America vs Japan :JPN - 9:05pm

Team USA

Nina Roth

Tabitha Peterson

Aileen Geving

Rebecca Hamilton

Team Japan

Satsuki Fujisawa

Chinami Yoshida

Yumi Suzuki

Yurika Yoshida

Thoughts/Background Information

Well, here we go! I don't know what to think of the Roth rink. I am really interested to see how they perform.

Figure Skating

Pair's Short  - 5:00pm

Team USA

Alexa Scimeca Knierim

Chris Knierim

Thoughts/Background Information

Good results in the Team Event will hopefully lead the Knierim couple into a good spot in this Olympics. But this is easily the USA's weakest event.

Ice Hockey

Men's

:USA United States of America vs Slovenia :SLO - 4:10am

[I don't want to type all of their names]

Thoughts/Background Information

I am really interested to see how this college/AHL/ECHL roster will do. No NHL players for Team USA. Game 1 verses Slovenia will be a good test.

Luge

Doubles Runs 1 & 2 - 3:20am

Team USA

Matthew Mortensen

Jayson Terdiman

Justin Krewson

Andrew Sherk

Thoughts/Background Information

Only 2 runs for the doubles teams, and Mortensen and Terdiman are looking good after the training runs. Should be fun.

Nordic Combined

Individual Gundersen NH/10km  - 2:00am

Team USA

Jasper Good

Ben Loomis

Taylor Fletcher

Bryan Fletcher

Thoughts/Background Information

For Nordic Combined, athletes do a ski jump, and are scored accordingly. For every point your are behind the leader, you start 4 seconds behind them. USA aren't expected to medal.

Snowboard

Men's Halfpipe Final - 5:30pm

Team USA

Ben Ferguson

Chase Josey

Jake Pates

Shaun White

Thoughts/Background Information

Let's get it! Easily 4 of the favorites here, and we have Shaun White. Easy favorites for Gold.

Speed Skating

Women's 1000m - 2:00am

Team USA

Jerica Tandiman

Brittany Bowe

Heather Bergsma

Thoughts/Background Information

Bergsma is once again the American favorite. She has won a world cup race this season, with Nao Kodaira of Japan winning 3. However, she won almost every race last year, so she is still a strong medal contender. Bowe is also a strong skater, but this is not her specialty.

Curling

Team USA

John Shuster

Tyler George

Matt Hamilton

John Landsteiner

Team South Korea

Kim Chang Min

Seong Se Hyeon

Kim Min Chan

Lee Ki Bok

Recap

Pretty good first game for Shuster. Matt Hamilton was stellar, shooting the second best average of curlers in their first game. Rest of the team needs to pick it up a bit, as they made some key mistakes that let Korea back into the game.

Women's

:USA United States of America 5 vs 10 Japan :JPN

Team USA

Nina Roth

Tabitha Peterson

Aileen Geving

Rebecca Hamilton

Team Japan

Satsuki Fujisawa

Chinami Yoshida

Yumi Suzuki

Yurika Yoshida

Recap

This was ugly. Japan got 7 points in the first 3 ends without having the hammer once. Really bad performance.

Figure Skating

Pair's Short

Team USA

Alexa Scimeca Knierim

Chris Knierim - 14th

Recap

Wasn't good, wasn't the worst. They missed some important jumps and now sit in 14th place. Very far outside medal territory.

Ice Hockey

Men's

:USA United States of America 2 vs 3* Slovenia :SLO

[I don't want to type all of their names]

Recap

Overtime loss to the Slovenians after leading 2-0 after 2 periods. Really unfortunate showing for our Men's team. This is now how you believe in miracles.

Luge

Doubles Runs 1 & 2 - 3:20am

Team USA

Matthew Mortensen - 10th

Jayson Terdiman - 10th

Justin Krewson - 8th

Andrew Sherk - 8th

Recap

Very poor second run for both. 6-7 finish in run one, then 10-13 in run two. Oof.

Nordic Combined

Individual Gundersen NH/10km  - 2:00am

Team USA

Jasper Good - 45th

Ben Loomis - 41st

Taylor Fletcher - 35th

Bryan Fletcher - 17th

Recap

We got a top 20. So that's nice.

Snowboard

Men's Halfpipe Final - 5:30pm

Team USA

Ben Ferguson - 4th

Chase Josey - 6th

Jake Pates - 8th

Shaun White - 1st

Recap

3rd run Shaun strikes again! Pulls out the victory of Hirano at the death! Really good showing for all Americans, shame we couldn't pull out more than 1 medal. But still super proud of everyone!

Speed Skating

Women's 1000m - 2:00am

Team USA

Jerica Tandiman - 28th

Brittany Bowe - 4th

Heather Bergsma - 8th

Recap

4th for Brittany, she has had a fantastic first 2 runs. Heather dropped off on the last lap, getting winded at the end.

    • I read now that Valentina Rodini will be in the new team of Tizzano + Galtarossa and Martini. I was probably in such an information bubble on Instagram that I thought that only Abbagnale was running a campaign and had a team of people around him. That's why I was surprised by his defeat + the fact that, for example, Rodini supports his rival. But as I wrote, for me the change in the general coach position is a plus. We need a new opening and a new impulse: Cattaneo had his best results in Tokyo and then he only explained that his rowers were running away abroad to the USA to study and that's why he had worse results. Ok, except that it's the same in Romania and Greece but they results are comparable or better. It's obvious that no one here will make the UK or the Netherlands, because we don't have such resources and money but I think we can repeat the Romanian results (2 gold - 3 silver in Paris) and that will be a much better result than the 2 silver in this year.
    • Abbagnale boasted that he had 80 per cent a few days before the vote (I still have the screen) and ran again as a result of a power deal. Not a great loss.   I have doubts about the new technical director though, you can't announce him during the congress, brandishing the scalp of the Abbagnale era technical staff (who then, were Crispi's men). Let's hope there are no rifts between the new staff and the athletes, it had to be handled better.
    • I was surprised by Abbagnale's defeat. I thought he was a sure of victory, since he decided to run - I read some source that he didn't know if he would start before Paris 2024. What do you think about it?

    • Cattaneo was good but his peak was in Tokyo 2021. Then there was such stabilization - stagnation. In Paris the result was in line with expectations but without the wow effect. They threw everything that was best into the quadruple sculls and it was enough for a only silver. Now without the lightweight sculls in LA I think that radical changes are needed to remain competitive. Previously there was a 3-year Olympic cycle due to Covid, so big changes weren`t good but now I think the time is right. Although of course more funds are needed for this sport in Italy, because even the best coach will not overcome this vel our men`s alpine skiing sector
