Team USA - Rugby Sevens

Our Women took Bronze for the first time this year, after finishing fourth three times.  We're in third in the overall standings.  :AUS and :NZL have been 1-2 each time.  We'll see how the end of the season goes!

Our Men came in 2nd in the first SVNS 2 tourney a few weeks ago.  They have two more the last two weekends of this month.  Hope we can get promoted (though not sure exactly how to get promoted back to the top tier SVNS...will research more later).

Looks like top 4 of 6 get promoted.

From what I see, I think that means that the top 4 get to compete with the Top 8 teams in SVNS in the three WCh events at the end of the season.  I think then the Top 8 after that event stay in (or are promoted to) SVNS, with the last 4 being in SVNS 2 the next year.  Source: 'It’s then a three-tournament shootout for not only the overall World Championship crown, but more importantly, top-eight survival next season.' from https://www.svns.com/en/news/1038945/how-new-look-hsbc-svns-set-up-has-changed-the-game

With that said, I do think our men and our women should be in those last three comps.

Reminder that our ladies take to the pitch tomorrow in NY.

Also, stating the obvious, since I'm working on the qualis, that we get a team for each gender.  Other quotas starting to be allocated mid-2027.

:AUS 26:19 :USA  Close game, but we came up short.

We get :NZL in the semis tomorrow at 1:12 pm EDT, then depending on whether we win or lose, we'll play at 4:16 (bronze) or 5:14 (gold).

Our men took home the top place in this weekend's SVNS 2 competition. :)  Last SVNS 2 competition is this weekend in São Paulo, then on to World Champs with guys and girls both there.

Our men ended up in 4th this past weekend in São Paulo, but we still ended up on top of the SVNS 2 tournament, thus officially qualifying for the World Champs coming up starting mid-April.  :USA

Our men were drawn into a tough pool with both :AUS and :NZL (though we almost beat NZL), and then it didn't help that we lost the match vs. :KEN.  So, we ended up in the 9th place SF vs. :GBR.  I watched those highlights, and it was a tight match, but GB pulled it off, so we're off to play for the 11-12 classification vs. :GER.

Our women lost to :CAN in the QF, so we'll be playing in one of the classification games later.

    • Looks like i severely overestimated the intelligence of the average Bulgarian.. Tragic result, but will see what happens now. Initial stance last night was that there won't be any EU blockage, but we will be "standing our ground on Bulgaria's interests", whatever that means. The campaign and the whole election cycle was more towards our domestic problems, corruption and status quo. There wasn't much foreign rhetoric, even though everyone knows Radev's position.   It's basically wait and see at this point. Like i mentioned before, this guy isn't as bombastic as Orban, but more tactical and cunning, so i don't expect fireworks in front of whole Europe.

    • To give some insight into how ridiculous Angharad's time was, the mixed relay that includes her, the infamous female breaststroker, is one second quicker than the four that includes Adam ****ing Peaty.   It's VERY rare your quickest mixed 4 includes your female breaststroker - the slowest stroke also creates, generally the biggest 'sex' gap. But if your male stroker is relatively very weak (think USA Tokyo 2020) it can be explained.   When your male stroker is Adam Peaty, backed up by Filip Nowacki, its insane.
    • Doesn't seem to be major changes.   Section 3.B has been updated in relation to the host nation quota to introduce 'eligible' into the criteria. In the new version, 'if the host country has not already qualified an athlete, the highest-placed host country eligible athlete based on the final results of the Olympic Games 2028 Qualification Event will directly obtain a quota place. If the host country has already had one or two athletes qualify via alternate pathways, the host country quota position will not be granted and will be reallocated.'   There is also a change to section F1 and F2 to introduce gender criteria - 'If an allocated quota place is not confirmed by the NOC by the confirmation of quota places deadline, or is declined by the NOC, the quota place will be reallocated to the next highest placed eligible athlete not yet qualified of the same gender from the same qualification event where the quota place was allocated , adhering to the maximum number of quota places per NOC, as outlined above (B.2).'
    • Massidda is another disappointment and Imperio- it's great that she has gold, but she's not making any progress in her results and with this result, she won't even qualify for the Olympics in 2028 (in 2024 also her failed to qualify). Considering the return of our old friends from Eastern Europe, Italy can basically give up on the sport- our chances of an Olympic medal are practically zero, at now.
