Team USA in 2026 - Weekly Digests Road to LA 2028

Recommended Posts

On to Week 11: A bit of everything!

In Tennis - The Miami Open will be wrapping up.  Plenty of USA folks left!

We've got a lot of Road Cycling - Volta a Catalunya, and several races in Belgium.  Not sure who will be racing.

Amanda Sobhy will be in Wimbledon playing Squash in a tournament there.

Major Equestrian Jumping event at Wellington...a cool $1,000,000 prize there.  (So much money in this sport.)

Another Beach Volleyball Challenge event in Mexico.

Shooting is opening in Tangiers with a shotgun event.

We've got Épee and Sabre World Cups in Fencing

Artistic Swimming and Open Water Swimming each have a world cup.

And for the BMX fans, we've got Nationals in Freestyle and Racing.  The racing is about an hour away from me in SC, but I can't find good info about exactly what time...and I'm also leaving the next day for Spring Break, so I might have to let this one pass...

One more Archery indoor competition in Vegas

Sailing has its first major regatta (Trofeo Princess Sofia)

USMNT has a friendly vs. :BEL in Atlanta

Our Men's Rugby Sevens team has one last prelim competition in São Paulo

And finally, World Cup in Rhythmic Gymnastics

(I mean, it's basically the Olympics every weekend, right?  Just gotta know where to look.)

Excited to see how our men’s soccer team looks this week vs two really good opponents. Huge opportunity coming this summer at the World Cup!

Week 12

This week sees the opening of a couple of sports:

The Shooting (Shotgun) World Cup in Tangier is finally underway.  Check it out on ISSF's YouTube.

Sailing is underway in Mallorca for the Trofeo Princesa Sofia, the first event of the Sailing Grand Slam.  (No live streaming from what I can find, unfortunately.  Just the website's updates of results.  Perhaps there will be highlights every now and again.)

There's an IITF Table Tennis World Cup in Macao.  Lily Zhang and Kanak Jha are there.  They have it streaming on FanDuel TV, which I had never heard of...but I think it's free.

Tennis is in my neck of the woods, down in Charleston for the Charleston Open (WTA 500).  Jess Pegula is the seeded #1.

Tomorrow is another Soccer friendly in Atlanta vs. :POR.  Hoping for a better result.

Surfing opens up later this week down in Australia.  (Probably will be streaming live on World Surf League?)

We have two more Road Cycling events in Belgium.  One on Wednesday, and one on Easter Sunday.

Later this week is the US Open Water National Championships in Sarasota.

There is a Gymnastics Apparatus World Cup in Cairo this weekend.  Not sure if we'll be there.

Also this weekend in my neck of the woods is an Eventing 4* event, which I might check out.

Saturday is a Street Skateboarding event in DTLA (which is apparently an acronym that people use...I've just learned it recently...Downtown Los Angeles, if you're not in the know).  (This also might be streaming live on Street League Skateboarding's YouTube?)

Starting Saturday is a week-long Platinum event of Squash in Egypt.

Also starting Sunday is an ATP 1000 event of Tennis in Monaco, and a Rifle/Pistol Shooting World Cup in Granada, Spain.

Yep, very common to see it used when talking about...well...DTLA in SoCal.

    • Also it being illegal in France means the IOC will have to test everyone pre arriving at 2030 and can’t wait till they arrive at the Games to do so. I’m sure at 2028 for some sports testing will happen on site if it’s not a rule of its governing body for non Olympic events. So far only a few sports like Athletics and Boxing have that rule - I suspect others will adopt it but others might take time.
    • https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/articles/cpwj78lxypro ‘In France - one of a number of countries where genetic testing is illegal without a medical prescription due to privacy laws - the government has condemned the decision as "a step backwards". "It defines the female sex without taking into account the biological specificities of intersex individuals, whose sexual characteristics present natural variations, leading to a reductive and potentially stigmatising approach," claimed French Sports Minister Marina Ferrari.”   ‘A group of legal experts in human rights and sports have since expressed, external"urgent concern" about what they called "the regressive move toward genetic testing as a precondition of participation in women's sport" which they say "violate domestic and international laws that protect human rights and regulate the use of genetic testing and genetic information".  The group has called on athletes "to challenge the national or regional implementation of mandatory genetic sex testing, demanded by the IOC or international federations, before domestic courts, by invoking national or regional laws protecting human rights, prohibiting anti-discrimination, and regulating the use of genetic testing and genetic data".’   Domestic laws are more challenging for the IOC to deal with than CAS. Things could get complicated for a bit.
    • Except NOC’s and governing bodies have to still follow local laws. Particularly for Under 18’s there could certainly be domestic legal issues regarding associations paying for travel to other counties to circumvent a domestic ban. Child protection services don’t always act reasonable to attempts to break a domestic law.
