She's a great cyclist, but not a grand champion. It's not comparable to van Vleuten or van der Breggen in their prime, would you agree?

Certainly not, no. Elisa Balsamo is, unlike Longo Borghini, a former world champion, but that certainly doesn't mean she is a better cyclist than Longo Borghini. I mean, surely nobody is gonna say Magdalena Vallieres is a better cyclist* than many of the best riders of the past 10-15 years who did not win a gold medal, based on her amazing ride of today?

*not meant in any way as disrespect towards Vallieres, she was amazing today and absolutely deserved the win more than anyone, and I hope she will show this way more often, because it was awesome.

Impossible to say with Women's  cycling which is still developing as a pro sport.

These ciclist are from the same generation, so they can be compared they. Longo Borghini is on Kasia Niewiadoma's level- she won TDF in 2024, but they still a level under, for example, van Vleuten.

Italy had a much worse World Champions than Balsamo, e.g. Marta Bastianelli in 2007, do you still remember her?

Yeah that started a trauma.

Marianne Vos at the world championships after winning the title as a super young rider in 2006:

2007 --> silver behind :ITA Bastianelli

2008 --> silver behind :GBR Cooke

2009 --> silver behind :ITA Guderzo

2010 --> silver behind :ITA Bronzini

2011 --> silver behind :ITA Bronzini

2012 --> Finally won again, at home

2013 --> Won again, in :ITA, sweet revenge

:p

I think we can talk about Van Vleuten, Balsamo, Longo Borghini, Niewiadoma, Vollering, vdBreggen etc in their prime all day long, none of them will ever come anywhere near Marianne Vos in any way.

Vos was also successful on the track, but she wasn't exactly the type of rider to compete in stage races, although I think she won 1 Giro d`Italia on her life? Tour de France wasn't organize in that time.

Stages but general classification?

Won by over 3 minutes, including the points and mountain jersey once. Won by, again, over three minutes the following year, including the points jersey. Won it again two years later. Also won the Emakumeen Bira twice (including a boatload of stage wins). Whole lot of other GC wins as well, often by winning several stages in them.

Canada is probably having a year of century in summer sports – everything works good for them. The Italian team, without fire – Longo Borghini – will probably never win World Championship gold, but it must also be write that he's not Pogacar or someone like that, who would attack alone and finish solo. These tactical races are strange for women, but last year in the World Championships Longo was going for gold, but Vollering chasing her and finally Kopecky took the gold. Pagacar, when he attacks, is unstoppable and that's the difference between a great champion and a solid cyclist, like Longo, Niewiadoma, etc.

 We’ve had a lot of disappointments too, don’t worry.
