Totallympics Awards 2024

Before this thread fades into the forgotten abyss of Totallympics Mixed Zone, I'd like to propose my idea of nomination juries once more. There seems to be a good amount of interest as shown by the second round of voting, so maybe the idea is worth considering. Users could volunteer for categories they feel comfortable tracking, with the vote opening to all users in the second round. The only exception would be for "sport moment of the year," which would keep open voting in the first round as the "big" award of the evening.

Thoughts?

Speaking for myself, it is a bit daunting to think of nominations from nothing. Some kind of "long list" suggestion would be nice, but the work to come up with something like 30-50 options for each category would be quite onerous on the host/committee.

Every year I do track some of the categories (Best Paralympic Athlete, Best Youth Athlete, Best Doubles or Pair) and I see that voters really use them, so it would be nice to have something similar in other categories (or maybe a shortlist of 20 names or so). Of course that could only work if enough people are interested to participate in these committees, because some of them are kinda specific (like Best Non-Olympic Athlete).

The issue with that is that it's undoable to, say, track the category 'best male athlete'. That doesn't really split the work, since that person would still need to keep track of all sports, just only the men. It might be easier to split it on a per-sport basis, or something like that.

There's plenty of people who follow non-Olympic sports for examplex, but not a lot who follow all non-Olympic sports. I'm perfectly capable of following stuff like Formula 1 and MotoGP, since I watch those anyway, but....I don't know, chess or something, no idea :p

after the last second goal from France, I remember just now my favorite moment from 2024: the last point from the basketball final. what a thing to end the Olympics and decide the Medal tally 'winner'!

The Olympic and Paralympic year brought a lot of joy and emotional moments to Totallympics members around the world. As we say goodbye to our annual awards, here's hope that 2025 can also be a memorable year for all sports fans. For now, we'll remember the moments that brought us together in 2024, presenting this edition's theme song: "I Lived", by American band OneRepublic.

Thank you all! Have a great year and until the next Totallympics Awards!
