PENNY DEL sets new attendance record in the main round

A total of more than 2.8 million visitors come to the arenas of the German Ice Hockey League.

Average number of spectators rises to 7781.

MagentaSport also reports record: for the first time, more than 20 million people watch the games of the main round.

The German Ice Hockey League (PENNY DEL) will conclude the main round of the 2024/25 season, which ends on Friday, with a new attendance record.

In total, the 364 games were seen by more than 2.8 million visitors for the first time.

This corresponds to an increase of around 8 percent compared to the previous season (2.61 million), in which the PENNY DEL set a new European record among ice hockey leagues.

On average, 7,781 spectators watched the games (previous year: 7,160).

"We had hoped that we could once again beat last season's record with, among other things, the new SAP Garden in Munich and the DEL Winter Game in Frankfurt," said Gernot Tripcke, Managing Director of the PENNY DEL.

"We succeeded in doing this together with our 14 clubs, almost all of which achieved an increase in audience numbers.

Even the Kölner Haie, who already made headlines last season with a European record, have increased their average to almost 18,000 visitors per game and are achieving an occupancy rate of almost 96 percent in their arena."

MagentaSport is also continuing to grow together with the league.

As Stefan Thelen, who is responsible for sports content at Deutsche Telekom, announced today at a press conference, the TV partner set a new record in the ninth year of the cooperation: a total of 20.9 million people will have watched the main round games of the PENNY DEL live on MagentaSport.

This corresponds to an increase of 11 percent compared to last season.

Since the start of broadcasts in the 2026/17 season, the reach has increased by more than 300 percent, according to the TV partner.

    • Despite total domination by the Norwegian men (and yes, it's exhausting and boring), the accomplishments this weekend of Emil Iversen and Einar Hedegart are worth highlighting, despite them being Norwegian.    Iversen was dropped by the Norwegian national team after the opener in Beitostølen 2 weeks ago and was not taken to Ruka. Instead, he won both the 10k and 20k Interval Classic starts in Gålå in the Norwegian Cup last week, which granted him a spot on the start line in Trondheim. He took full advantage of that opportunity and finished on the podium in the skiathlon, and finished just off the podium in today's 10k Interval Freestyle. This definitely puts his name in serious contention for a spot on the Olympic team, which looked incredibly doubtful just a few days ago.    Einar Hedegart, the 24-year-old biathlete who decided to challenge the stereotype that biathletes are inferior skiers to their cross-country counterparts, just won the 10k Interval Start against all of Norway's best in a de facto Olympic trial.    Yes, it's exhausting seeing nothing but Norwegian flags on the men's side, but there can be excitement just beneath the surface at times.
