Winning any medal at the Olympics needs to be celebrated, regardless of the disappointment of some near misses.

Team GB have been performing extremely well across sports.

Tell the Metro that - an article about Gold for the cycling women team but GB rue the missed chances.

Oh well. Honestly couldnt tell you if he should have won or not, 🤞 boxing will be gone for L.A

I’m not sure it will the IOC will be worried about the fact multiple countries won their only medal/s in the sport and that all the new sports both there and in Brisbane favour countries who already do well in other sports.

Boxing has to go, yes that one was tighter but I’m certain Richardson won that final round.

The IBA started this mess and unless they chance the system it is just too open to corruption

The one system that worked reasonably well was the 2012 system, where you simply totted up strikes like taekwondo - unlike taekwondo however, they didn't work out a points system to reward combinations or more impactful strikes. But the 10 must system was pretty brought back to ALLOW a bit of corruption - and its one of the issues World Boxing is going to have to look into when it takes the reins...

and don't kid yourself, World Boxing is going to get the reins, if only pour encourager les autres i.e. to warn other feds what happens if they disobey the IOC. Losing your sport from the Olympics is one thing. Losing control of the sport to someone else while it stays in the Olympics is something else.

In honour of the source of that quote, I would be content just to stick some of the judges in front of a firing squad. :yes

I may be off by a couple in either direction (and I'm sure/I hope people will point out where I'm wrong!), but I reckon we have 33 legitimate medal chances left, in addition to the 46 already won, and the 1 secured in the Men's Team Pursuit:

Should Medal (15):

MHS (400m M)
4x400m M
4x100m W
KJT (Heptathlon)
Emma Finucane (Sprint W)
Emma Finucane (Keirin W)
Team Pursuit W
Ethan Hayter (Omnium M)
Hayter/Wood (Madison M)
Barker/Evans (Madison W)
Jack Laugher (3m Springboard M)
Joe Choong (Modern Pentathlon M)
Gimson/Burnet (Mixed Nacra 17)
Ellie Aldridge (Kite W)
Bradley Sinden (-68kg M)

Could Medal (18):

Shortman/Thorpe (Artistic Swimming Duet)
Ben Pattison (800m M)
4x100m M
Amber Anning (400m W)
Laura Muir (1500m W)
4x400m W
Jack Carlin (Sprint M)
Jack Carlin (Keirin M)
Noah Williams (10m Platform M)
Charley Hull/Georgia Hall (Golf W)
Kerenza Bryson/Kate French (Modern Pentathlon W)
Connor Bainbridge (Kite M)
Michael Beckett (ILCA7 M)
Toby Roberts (Boulder & Lead M)
Hector Pardoe (10km Open Water M)
Jade Jones (-57kg W)
Rebecca McGowan (+67kg W)
Emily Campbell (+81kg W)

Bold = Gold contender.

Obviously not all of the 15 will come in, but from that list of 33 it's not unreasonable to think we could get 18-20 medals and 6 Golds, which would leave us on 18 Golds and 65-67 total medals...

Will we have the bigger imbalance of Golds vs Total Medals than the USA?

I agree. They would have fixed the problems with the combinations and pitter patter shots if they had wanted to but they wanted in on the money and prestige of professional boxing and so set up their weird in-between boxing league and made loads of changes. Professional boxing is too dangerous for the Olympics and they need to move away from it again.

Thanks- this is a really useful guide for the coming days.

No doubt there’ll be fine margins in it, but I would personally be disappointed if we don’t hit 60 medals. I think in terms of Golds, it would be good to either match or beat Beijing’s total (19). Perhaps an unrealistic goal at this point.

I know people put different weight on the importance of medal table positioning, but I would have liked to stay on top of Australia or France (or both). Top four was certainly within reach I feel, and if you look back on our string of almosts (Women’s Skeet, Men’s BMX Freestyle, Individual Eventing, Men’s Golf, Men’s 100m Breaststroke, Men’s 200m Freestyle) if things had gone the other way we wouldn’t be having these conversations.

That I suppose is the nature of sport, you’ll always rue your chances and look back at where improvements could have been made. Certainly not a disappointing performance by Team GB, but hope for some luck in the coming days.

The medal target is 50-70 plus top 5. Over 60 would be a good performance and pretty much on track with the last three games. The gold drop off is an issue throigh. Being beaten by Australia will surely raise some eyebrows in particular because of their size,

Medals aside I’m just not going to be ok without a constant buffet of sport to watch next week.

There’s been fantastic performances and heroic moments aplenty so far (triathlon, mountain biking and todays poison of skateboarding to name a few!) and I shall just be here savouring the next five days!
