Tokyo 2020 Qualification without continental qualification

Recommended Posts

Seeing the qualifying taking place for Paris and "unfair" quotas given to NOCs in some sports, I am going to try and create an alternate qualifying scenario if continental quotas (and host ones), were discarded and reallocated to everyone, just to see what effect that would have. Where possible, I will try to highlight some medallists that would not have qualified.

Great idea, I've always wanted to do some kind of simulation, but never had the time.

I suspect that while the big non-European nations will see a drop, it will be more devastating from a percentage point of view to the smaller non-European nations. Europe as a whole will benefit the most.

Just be careful to not exclude athletes which didn't participate in qualifiers because they have already qualified via continental qualifies.

Are we considering the host quota a continental spot now? :p

No, but I thought that often host nations get a lot of quota benefits and it would be interesting to see without.

Fair enough.

I support some tweaks to continental quotas, but host quotas should almost certainly stay. If you're going to invest a couple million/billion dollars into hosting the thing, we might as well throw you a bone :p

I agree, in fact, I think there should be more in some sports. eg. Team Gymnastics.
