Great Britain at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships

Recommended Posts

Assume we might have a few things to celebrate (and a few to commiserate) over the next couple of weeks but before we get into that, does anyone know if there is any coverage of the events expected in the UK. I would have thought that BBC would have had rights - am pretty sure that they have shown the swimming and diving in the past - but don't see them on the broadcast list

Kate Shortman is the first of the Brits to take the plunge in the artistic swimming women's solo -technical, preliminaries. She scores 223.6033 to finish in 5th and comfortably qualify for the final.

Defending champion Yukiko Inui :JPN topped the prelims with score of 273.27, ahead of Evangelina Platanioti :GRE on 252.24 and Vasiiliki Alexandri :AUT on 232.8367.

In comparison, in 2022 Shortman scored 83.8324 (different scoring systems so not directly comparable) and finished the prelims in 7th, although it is worth noting that 2022 silver medalist Marta Fiedina :UKR is not in Fukuoka.

There is a slim chance of a medal - Alexandri looked to be in some discomfort when she was waiting for her results but Shortman would need to nail her routine in the final.

Ranjuo Tomblin scored 166.8601 to finish 6th in the prelim of the artistic swimming men's solo - technical.

I'm assuming something went wrong with his routine as he had the second highest starting degree of difficulty at 27.8 but this was marked down to 15.2 and his execution score was only 84 - in comparison at the World Cup meet in Montpelier earlier this year, he scored 188 with a difficulty score of 23.05 and an execution of 121.2292.

BBC never ever bother with artistic swimming.  It's on streaming - you need to create a login id but it's free.

:GBR Duet - Katie Shortman and Isabelle Thorpe score 226.9067 in the preliminaries of the women's artistic swimming duet -technical. This was enough to put them into 10th and qualified them to the final.

For comparison, they scored 242.9967 at the European Games last month, so their performance has dropped back a fair bit - in fact they were probably the only European nation that underperformed compared to Poland and it meant that they were overtaken by :ITA , :ISR and :ESP

When compared to their performance in 2022 when they qualified in 9th, the scoring has changed which makes direct comparison difficult, but they did qualify ahead of the :JPN :USA

Wrapping up the :GBR performances on day 1 - Jordan Houlden qualified for finals of 1m Springboard diving. His score of 374.9 was enough to finish in 3rd. That was about 30 points less than Peng Jianfeng.

He'll have a chance of a medal but likely to be fighting it out with :AUS Shixin Li for bronze

Kate Shortman finishes 12th -and last - in the artistic swimming women's solo - technical final. Looks like she got a huge deduction on her degree of difficulty - in the prelims it was 28.2 but in the final only 15.2

Not sure what is going on with the British Artistic Swimming Teams but that's pretty much every competition where their awarded degree of difficulty is about 40-50% less than the DD that they are submitting.

In the team technical, the start list had a DD score of 30.6 but they were only awarded 17.05 and they are pretty much certain to miss out on the final - doesn't matter so much this year, but if they are looking to sneak into the team event for the Olympics, they need to be more secure in the DD scores when it comes to Doha.

By finishing inside the top 20, Hector Pardoe (10th) and Amber Keegan (18th) have secured pre-selection for next year's world championships in Doha.

    • Nobody in the US watches it is the problem the IOC has. That and it's kinda dead as a grassroots sport - I ski and I've only seen one Alpine board in my entire life. It was displayed in a store as a curiosity and it was *old*. Much easier to participate in snowboardcross at a recrational level.   I don't think it should be removed, but Alpine snowboarding has a perception problem as a dead sport, at least outside of Europe (I don't have a good sense of how often Alpine snowboarding is shown on TV in Europe and how popular those broadcasts are).
