I wonder if Greek TV showed this event? I suppose they're not used to broadcasting winter sports that much? :p @Makedonas

Unfortunately no one is really talking about it. I mean I didn't even know these WC were happening until after I read the news that he won the medal. It will be really hard for this sport to get more exposure although this is definitely a step in the right direction. He said in an interview recently that he is a big fan of Tsitsipas and wants to do in alpine skiing what Tsitsipas did for tennis in Greece, although he is already 28 so it will be hard to achieve something like that.

Honestly when I heard the news today, I expected more of a reaction on social media but it's basically been forgotten just a few hours later and overshadowed by the AEK vs PAOK derby in football and Cup final in basketball...not to mention we had the National Indoor Championships in athletics where everyone was looking to see what Tentoglou would do today. Sakkari posted about Ginnis on her Instagram but other than that I have not yet seen any famous person mention this.

When Korakaki for example wins shooting WC medals, again there is very little interest generally, so I guess we shouldn't be too surprised...

I believe (not fully sure) this is the first WC medal for Greece in any winter sport in history!

That is correct. At the Winter Olympics our best result ever was 13th place. I hope Ginnis can break this record. He missed Beijing 2022 due to injury unfortunately.

This is probably even worse than those minor medals in weightlifting nobody cares about

The people on the ice hockey roster are actually Greeks from Greece, not from the Greek diaspora, so that basically confirms the level must have been extremely low those years if we were able to win medals

Also I want to add that when Petrounias wins his gymnastics WC gold medals, a lot of people will like/comment/share his posts but I bet you 95% of them have never watched his routines and just celebrate the gold medals, pretending to be such big fans. I am not sure if it is like this in other countries too or just Greeks.

Even with tennis, to watch most matches of Tsitsipas you have to pay more money for the channels that show tennis regularly, or go to a cafe/bar that has the channels. It's the same for many other sports in Greece as well so it's really hard for "new" sports to become popular. Roland Garros is the only tournament shown on public TV every year, so you can imagine how big it was in 2021 to have one player in the final and one in the semifinals. Everyone was watching, but since then a lot of these people don't want to pay more money to be able to watch tennis.

Also the biggest Greek sports website has an article about Ginnis' medal and there are 0 comments on it. For contrast, Femke Bol's WR article got 9 comments so far, and Medvedev winning Rotterdam ATP 500 got 1 comment, so I'm not really exaggerating when I say no one is talking about him.

    • so, the Swiss reigning champions, who saved their ass in the last match of the RS, now are almost safe in the semis once again...   very impressive performance also by RB Salzburg, I didn't expect them to make such a good run, even if the 2nd leg match won't be easy at all and they're all but safe in the final four

    • I guess 65, 79, 88, 110, 110+ will be the Olympic classes for 2028 (I don't think IOC would allow them to increase the number of gold medals available at the Games yet...most likely they want to to stay with the current lineup and see how it goes in the next Olympic cycle in terms of doping scandals before taking any decision)  or maybe they will keep those weights for the "regular activity" and later on they will set 5 different weight classes only good for Olympic purposes, with dedicated tournaments when it's time for the OQ (like Taekwondo, more or less)  but it's just my personal speculation, I have no infos from the inside
    • Today the funniest tournament of the season, the Shoot Out, will starts
    • Luckily for us, it happened exactly as we thought. Unfortunately, the Serbian players had to play the entire match, the difference in value between the starters and the reserves being quite large, and thus at the end of the match their fatigue was evident.
    • if they limit the number of qualified athletes to 8 per category that will not exceed the allocated quota (marginally). I know 8 athletes only is a bit harsh but will be more competitive.
    • Thank you for putting this together, it was fun to go through. From your keyboard to God's ears on Canada's short track team here (I believe you have us at 4-1-1, which is realistic if everything works out).   Leaving us off the podium in speed skating women's pursuit was interesting.   Three medals of any colour in curling would be celebrated at this point after two disasterous cycles.   In hockey, I'll always take our girls over the Americans (was "lucky" enough to see them lose in 2018 in person, though. Only time in 6 Games. Haha...hahahahaha...ha).    For the men, I said above unless Canada finds a goaltender I'm not too optimistic. USA is just too well rounded. But lots can happen by then, and in a one game elimination tournament.
    • big decision by IWF   new weight categories, 8 for men and 8 for women from June 2025   Men 60kg, 65kg, 71kg, 79kg, 88kg, 98kg, 110kg, +110kg Women 48kg, 53kg, 58kg, 63kg, 69kg, 77kg, 86kg, +86kg   and this means all World records will be erased AGAIN !    https://iwf.sport/2024/12/03/iwf-executive-board-meeting-in-manama-brn-december-2-3-main-decisions/   I think that was a good decision, 10 weights was too much. but erasing the current World Records was the down side of this decision.   but does this mean they have some agreements with IOC to have all these weights at the Olympics ? that looks unlikely though  but looking at the numbers and the gap between weights none of them look like a "non-Olympic weight" at least that's what IWF thinks.
