:ITA fielding a Women's Team Sprint ... with Rachele Barbieri, the fastest of the endurance riders.

Probably because there is no Elena Bissolati. Of course Vece is in here, with Giada Capobianchi, who's a decent young sprinter.

:NED deciding not to try and qualify a Women's Team Pursuit. Odd choice given the recent progress of this young team. Leaves the door open for another country.

First morning's action completed - although couldn't find a live stream of the action which is a bit of a pain in the ass.

In the team sprints, Germany looking pretty good for gold and then it will be bun fight with France, GB Netherlands and Poland for the other medals.

The first quarter final will be most interesting pitting the Netherlands against Poland as the teams were separated by just 0.042. In the other quarter finals, GBR will take on Belgium, France have Czech Republic and Germany take on Italy.

On the men's side, there were no major surprises. The Netherlands topped qualifying fairly comfortably, ahead of GBR, France and Poland - a replica of qualifying from 2022 event. In the quarterfinals, Poland take on Germany whilst France have drawn Italy, GBR take on Spain and the Netherlands will ride against Czech Republic.

In the team Pursuit, the British women were about 3 seconds ahead of the field - I think that shows how important Archibald is to the British team. We'll have a rerun of the 2021 Olympic final as GBR take on Germany who will perhaps be a little disappointed to have only taken 4th in qualifying.  Italy qualified in 2nd and will take on France.

On the men's side, it is going to be hard for any team to get the better of Italy - they finished almost a second faster than GBR and will ride against France in the next round.  GBR have been drawn against Denmark.

Both British teams safely making it through to the gold finals in the team sprint - they're unlikely to win either but at least 2 guaranteed medals. Feel sorry for the Polish guys who came so close to making it to the bronze medal ride off but made a bit of a mistake with the final rider.

The British women almost threw that gold medal away - it was the most untidy ride I've seen from them in years.

The British guys can be happy with their performance after their horror showing in Tokyo and sub-par result in Munich last year.

In both cases, a decent platform to build upon for Paris next year.

At least the British women can call  on 2-3 better riders to improve the team for 2024.

I'm not sure the men can improve more in 18 months.

    • You know, but we still don't know what that was about. Ceccarelli has a difficult character but still changing colors to a country with which you have absolute no connetions? What would you say if Iga Swiatek fell out with the Polish tennis federation and started playing for Luxembourg or Andorra? Certainly not everyone would decide to take such a step, even if they had to give in a little in talks with the federation.    Another thing is that the Italian training system simply doesn`t work. As you can see, there are talents but we don`t know how to train them. Since the golden generation born in 1990-1995 (Brignone, Bassino, Goggia) we haven`t trained anyone who would stand on the podium in giant slalom or slalom in World Cup. So something is wrong. At the beginning of the 21st century we had a large group of good giant slalom athletes (maybe not at Brignone's level): Karbon, Moelgg, Putzer, Gius, etc., who were able to win World Cups, win World Championship medals, etc. Now we have no one. Take women's giant slalom for example: if Brignone and Bassino are gone, even getting to the XX World Cup will be a problem for us.
    • I remember that Lara Gut's family also had a conflict with the Swiss federation at the beginning of her career around 2008/2009 but it was resolved. I remember that the family also wanted to have a greater influence on their daughter's career. It was probably similar here. If there was a will from both sides, an agreement should have been reached. Especially since Colturi has zero ties with Albania. Sinner could have played for Austria sooner, as a person from South Tyrol.
    • Berrettini defeated Kokkinakis in 3 set   And now, it's Sinner time.
    • Well, it was to be expected that Colturi was going to have a breakout result like that sooner or later and the state of Italian alpine skiing will create some very long faces. But hey, if Italy  let their "best" prospect walk because of money then it's their fault. If there was some personal feud between Ceccarelli & federation it's even worse.
