Men's Ice Hockey IIHF Under 20 Division I Group A World Championship 2022

Tournament Format

Due extended sanctions of :RUS and :BLR IIHF decided that

No team from last years Top division Tournament has been relegated and at same time No team from lower Division I Group A Tournament advanced to this Tournament.

Which means same 10 Nations will play the Men´s Under 20 World Championship Top Division Tournament also this year.

The 10 teams are divided into two, five-team Preliminary groups A and B in the Preliminary Round.

After a single round-robin series in each group, the top four teams from each group advance to the Playoff Round while the fifth-placed team in each group will have to play the Relegation Round

The top four placed teams from the Preliminary will play a cross-over Quarterfinal game: 1A vs. 4B, 1B vs. 4A, 2A vs. 3B and 2B vs. 3A. The winner of each Quarterfinal moves onto the Semi-Finals.

In the semi-finals the best-ranked team - criteria: 1) placement in the group, 2) points in the preliminary round, 3) goal difference in the preliminary round, 4) goals scored in the preliminary round, 5) seeding coming into the tournament - will play against the lowest-ranked semi-finalist. The 2nd-best ranked semi-finalist will play the 3rd-best ranked semi-finalist. The host if qualified, or otherwise the best-ranked semi-finalist according to beforementioned criteria, shall play the early game. The time slots will officially be determined after the quarter-final games.

The winner of each Semi-Final game will move onto the Gold Medal Game, while the losers will play in the Bronze Medal Game.

The quarter-final losers will be ranked 5th to 8th according to 1. their position in the group, 2. their preliminary-round record (1. points, 2. goal difference, 3. goals scored).

Relegation Round

The two last-placed (5th) teams play a best-of-three Relegation Round series.

The third game is only played if needed. The winner of the series plays alongside all 8 Quarterfinalists again at the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship, while loser is relegated to Division I Group A next year.

The common joke in Slovakia last days is:

"Bad news slovaks, Juraj Slafkovský is playing good" :p

Yeah, sadly, this means for the nation only one thing, Montreal will not release him for the World Juniors and keep him in the NHL during the tournament.

There still apparently a mini-mini-mini-mini-mini-tiny-chance the Habs will accept and hear the voices of the whole under-tatras land inhabitants and let the kid go to the worlds, but it will equal probably a christmas miracle if it will happen.

However, the coach announced yesterday the list of 28 players which will prepare in Canada for the WCh, 3 of them will have to leave the team after last Exhibition game in the night from 23rd December to Christmas Eve against Austria.

The 24th December will be also the final date our team will announce the final 25 names list for the WCh. At that time we should also know the final and defenitive answer from Montreal Canadiens about Slaf presence at the tournament, but again the chance is so small that it is almost inexistant.

**Also as expected, Sadly, Montreal Canadiens did not release Juraj Slafkovský for this Tournament. But this was more-or-less expected. Good for him though, to be still in the NHL.

So at the end 5 this year Drafted players made the team. Š. Nemec, Mešár, Sýkora, Petrovský and Žlnka.

***Goal of the Team: Make it to the Quarterfinals (aka avoid the relegation Round) is the main and basic goal

    • Unfortunate, but it doesn't change the fact that I'm looking forward to Thursday evening, when the team captain's meeting is over and we have our very first World Cup start list of the season. Always a cool moment to see who's there and everything
    • Today I unpacked some of the boxes in which we have put my way too many books to move to our house, and I came across these beauty's I hadn't seen for a while     Absolutely recommended, tough to get for a decent price, but they are such an interesting read with lots of very interesting little stories! Still looking for at least 1900, 1904 and 1906, but not really in the right moment to spend money on that now, so the wait goes on
    • Which I guess is part of why unfortunately 'our' first wild card attempt of the season was rejected last week
    • The next chapter in the Krasnobaeva saga is upon us.   Looks like  Armenia have cut ties with her after only a few weeks. A person from their Federation has said, that they won't continue the relationship, because of her unprofessional and rude attitude towards the coaches and other officials. That includes: - having no respect to the coaches and their advise; - training without any motivation; - stops doing the routine and throws objects without any reason; - just lays on the floor and ignores the music.   When this was escalated with her mother, she mentioned that "Elvira has a strong temper and she was the same in Bulgaria and they tolerated her". Which of course is complete BS. If anyone attempted this shit here, they would be thrown out immediately.   And now  are wanting from her mother to return all finances they gave them, which she is refusing, so they will probably sue them. They will also inform other RG Federations about this situation, so they don't hire them.   My 2 cents on this is most likely Krasnobaeva was happy in BG and was forced out by her mother, so now she is sabotaging the move and be done with it.
    • Honestly Ruka is my favourite World Cup event of the whole season. Everybody is there. Later on there is always someone who skips one weekend or another . Not everybody takes part in Tour de ski. But here everyone shows up.
