First draft for a Biathlon Manager Game for the 2019/20 season

 

Hey everyone!

I have long thought about creating a manager game, and why not start with probably my favorite sport, Biathlon. The Biathlon Manager Game or BMG will be a season long manager game that will test every user/manager’s ability to create the most point-giving biathlon team throughout the IBU Biathlon World Cup season.

Rules and systems of the BMG will be explained in the following part:

 

1)  Creating your biathlon team

Your biathlon team will consist of 5 female and 5 male biathletes. You are only allowed to select 2 biathletes from the same nation. Only 1 male and 1 female biathlete from the same nation are allowed. 2 male or 2 female biathletes is not allowed.

 

2)  Point Systems

a)  Points for Individual races (Individual, Sprint, Pursuit and Mass Start)

Sprint Example:

Biathlete 1’s shooting: 0+2 = 16 points

Biathlete 2’s shooting: 0+0 = 30 points

 

Individual/Pursuit/Mass Start Example:

Biathlete 1’s shooting: 0+2+1+1 = 32 points

Biathlete 2’s shooting: 0+0+0+0 = 60 points

 

c)  Course time Points (Sprint, Individual and Mass Start)

The 10 fastest course times will be awarded as follow:

d)  Points for Position in Pursuit

Example with d):

Biathlete 1’s pursuit: Start: 14, Finish: 6 = 5+8 = 13 points

Biathlete 2’s pursuit: Start 11, Finish 13 = 0 points

Biathlete 3’s pursuit: Start 30, Finish 17 = 5+6.5 = 11.5 points

Biathlete 4’s pursuit: Start 27, Finish 27 = 5 points

 

e)  Points for Relay (Men’s, Women’s, Mixed and Single Mixed)

3) Transfer system

a) The transfer window is open from last race in a WC round has been completed to 1 hour before the start of the next race in the following WC round. Example: WC round 1 ends Sunday, January 15^th, the next race starts Thursday, January 19^th 11:00. Transfer window closes 10:00.

b) Every user/manager can maximum switch 2 biathletes on their team in one transfer window.

c) Every user/manager can switch a biathlete with another 6 times during the whole season.

d) All transfers must be reported to the BMG Host via personal message with the headline “Transfer”. A transfer is valid when the host of the BMG responds back with an “accepted”. The respond time will be within 1 hour, exception is between 23:00 (CET) and 08:00 (CET) or other situations. If the host of the BMG is hindered, it will be announced in good time in the BMG Discussion Thread.

e) The rules in 1) must not be violated.

f) Users/Managers can earn or lose points when they switch a biathlete on their team out with an another. Example:

User 1: Biathlete 1 has scored 180 points. User 1 chooses to switch out biathlete 1 with biathlete 2, who has scored 100 points. User 1 earns 80 points to his total score.

User 2: Biathlete 3 has scored 50 points. User 2 chooses to switch out biathlete 3 with biathlete 4, who has scored 120 points. User 1 loses 70 points to his total score.

g) If a user/manager violates b), he/she will be forfeited 50 points for every extra transfer.

    If a user/manager violates c), he/she will be forfeited 100 points for every extra transfer.

 

 4)  Ranking/Standing

a) Points for every biathlete will be updated after every competition/race in this document: (Here will be a link to a excel document when the season starts)

b) Points for every biathlete will be updated after every competition/race within five hours after the end of the competition/race. Exception! If the host of the BMG is hindered due to studies, job or other activities, the Ranking/Standing of the points of the biathletes will be updated at an announced time in a post in the BMG Discussion Thread. So remember to check it!

c) The standing for users/managers will updated after every competition/race within five hours after the end of the competition/race. (Here will be a link to a excel document when the season starts) Exception! see 3b

d) The standing for the points of the biathletes will not be ranked according to their total points. Biathletes will be added to the standing as they score points in the BMG. So always check the whole document!

 

5)  Mistakes and Problems

a)  Mistakes with points for biathletes or users/mangers can be reported to the host of the BMG in a personal message with the headline “Mistake”

b) The deadline for reporting any mistakes with points to the host of the BMG is 24 hours before the start of the upcoming WC round. Example: Men’s Sprint, Thursday January 25^th12:30, deadline is Wednesday January 24^th 12:30.

c) Any mistakes not reported before the end of the deadline will count and cannot be changed.

c) Problems with the site not working must be reported to the host of the BMG when the problem is solved, though only if the problem affects your team in the BMG.

d) If the site is down for a longer period for all users, the BMG will be stopped immediately, and not continue until all participants can log on/in the site again.

Last season (or the one before) we did something similar on a Dutch forum, it's fun  One idea I got from there, which might be applicable in this case especially when choosing only 5 men and 5 women (we had 10 I think): how about setting some sort of limit on the positions in this season's World Cup? For example, we could only choose two athletes from the top-5 of the World Cup, four from the top-10, something like that. Otherwise you're getting a lot of similar teams, because everyone's gonna pick JTB, Fourcade etc

So what you are suggestion is that after this season is over, the top-10 will be used for next season in some sort of limited choice of biathletes from this category?

Basically, yes. It 'forces' players to be a bit more creative and also look beyond the regular contenders.

I am in.  Another thought would be something like this.  

1 from 1-10

2 from 11-30

2 from 31-60

 

If you really want to make it interesting, take JT Boe and Fourcade out of contention.

I really want suggestions to a point system for shooting in the relays? We could also discuss if relays should count in the game?

You could add in points for maintaining team position in the relay or bettering it or losing it.

 

10 points if team in same position as when started leg

10 points + 3 points per spot the team has advanced in the standing during their leg

No points if team drops in the standings during their leg.

 

This would punish the top team, but it would make the 18th place team a little more interesting to watch.

Personally I would not make relays count, and if they do, only as a small bonus for the shooting or something (1 point per hit).
