Croatia National Thread

A bit late but still i see a need to do that, a review of croatian performance at the Rio Olympics.

It was really a great Olympics fro Croatia, 10 medals and i guess it will be difficult to ever reapat that. I was predicting seven medals, which was already sort of optimistic.

Athletics:

Looking only at Athletics, Croatia was 7th in the medal ranking.

We all expected gold from Sandra, and she did it, the other two meldas were huge surprises to me.

Sara Kolak is the new star, altough i knew she has a great future, I did not expect this result yet (final was my optimistic expectation). Lets see how things develop for her, but i hope we will watch her in many future competitions fighting for medals again.

Blanka, i was not expecting a  medal, clearly she benefited from the rather bad level in high jump this year and exclusion of russians. Nevertheless, without any competition this year (outdoor) it is a huge achievment to win bronze. She mentioned Tokio, I am not sure about it, i think it is time to retire. With all these injury problems, it just does not make sense. And gold in Tokio, i doubt.

Not to forget, Zunic and Ivancevic with final and semi final. Others rather bad (Mihaljevic, Horvat, Matosevic, Vrajic, Simic)

Overall great!

Basketball: Very positive for us. I am still somehow so sorry for that 3rd quarter gainst Serbia, but no one was expecting such a good performance, ok lets forget the game against Nigeria. I think we can expect something for the future, and Tokio could be even a medal without injuries and if all players continue to play for the national team. Overall positive!

Boxing: As i predicted :) bronze for Hrgovic, the semi final was really a bad fight from him. As expected Sep nothing. Overall positive!

Cycling: Very good performance of Djurasek, and no finish from Kvasina. Overall positive.

Diving: First time at Olympics in this sport and decent rank for Maric. Positive.

Gymnastics: And again a dissapointment for Ude, but somehow expected. I did not expect a medal, but was hoping for final.

Lets hope that we will have more athletes in Tokio, the qualification modus is changing in our favour. Derek, well, first Olympics, it was ok. Overall negative!

Handball: Probably the biggest disappointment of the Olympics for Croatia. I was sure we will make a medal, but in 1/4 finals it was a disaster and Poland deserved to win. Overall negative and it is time to fire Babic.

Judo: Matic lost in 1st round, She was my dark horse. Negative.

Still the outlook is positive. We have few very good young judokas with potential for Tokio (both Matic sisters, Kumric, Sikic, Topolovec etc)

Rowing: Two boats, two medals. And so close for Martin. What to say. Fantastic!

Only problem I see there are no other boats even close to Olympic level at this stage.

Sailing: Finally a medal. And actually two. Still a bit sorry about Stipanovic and the medal race, and Bambis medal race. But if someone told me before Rio two medals, i would have been very happy. Others according to expectations. Overall very very positive!

Shooting: Gold in trap for Glasnovic, plus two other finals. Overall sounds very good. I am still a bit dissapointed. We had two 9th places in disciplines where we had good chances for medals (Gorsa and Pejcic). But shooting is lottery, and both Pejcic and Gorsa with a 7th and 9th place each did well. I am very sorry for PEjcic after such a great year, she did not perform as well in Rio, i hope she will continue until tokio. We have a quite good team right now with few youngsters following. Others in Rio according to expectaions. Overall positive!

Swimming: Samardzic very good altough she did not reach her best results in backstroke. But the rankings were very good for her, and best Croatian results for long time. Todorovic as usual bad, and i hope not to see him any more at international level . It is time for a new generation led by Samardzic, Obrovac, Blaskovic, etc. Overall ok

Table Tennis: Gacina lost his first match, and actually he had a very good draw. Therefore negative! Our table tennis has  somehow a negative trend.

Tennis: Well, somehow negative, all won the matches they had to win, bit did not do anything spectacular. Probably the worst thing happaned before Olympics when Dodig decided he will not play. Overall negative

Taekwando: I did not expect a medal, but all 3 lost in 1 round. Here again it is probably time for a new generation (Rados, Kaneat, Brecic, Jelic, etc). Lets see if Zaninovics will continue, Grgic probably will retire soon. Negative!

Waterpolo: Positive surprise to me. Very good. Overall great!

Wrestling: Unfortuntely my prediction was correct and Bozo lost his bronze medal match. But overall positive, i am still not sure what happend in that match with the Russian as I am not an expert. I think the problem here was rather in the qualification period, as we did not qualify a single wrestler and were so close. lets hope we will have few wrestlers in Tokio (Starcevic, ettlinger, Lizatovic, etc)

Weightlifitng: Music, actually ok.

For Tokio i hope Croatia will qualify in few new sports as Archery, Badminton, Football, Karate, Synchronzied Swimming.

Triathlon and Beach Volleyball would be great as well, but i consider that as  hopeless.

Also a return in Canoeing Sprint/Slalom, Fencing, Equestrian (probably hopeless) would be great as well.

I dont have a clue how strong or not our athletes are in the new sports, but i guess with exception of Karate i dont think we have a chance.

Our Baseball Team is actually not bad, again qualified for this year's European Championship (which has 12 participating nations). But I guess only 1 or 2 European teams will qualify for Tokyo. Won't be enough for us.

Lucija Zaninovic actually won her first round match. She was very unlucky with losing to Aziez in the final seconds of the fight. And then Aziez lost to the Korean woman in sudden death round, so there was no repechage for Zaninovic.

Is it correct that our female basketball team practically does not have any chance to qulaify for the Eurobasket 2017?

I understand only chance is to beat France away, which is almost science fiction?

Unfortunately this looks to be correct. They will probably finish 2nd in their group, but with only one win against Netherlands they won't be among six best 2nd placed teams.

Our women's teams are quite bad overall, only Volleyball and Handball team are somewhere near top level.

Could Luka Paliska be a hope for Triathlon? I don't know much about him and am not very familiar with Triathlon in general, but he seems to have solid results at junior level.

Looks like we have a very interesting, and promising, pair in figure skating coming up. Lana Petranović and her foreign Russian-Portuguese partner Antonio Souza Kordeyru.

They made their international debut in Warsaw this weekend and scored some 138 points in total. Such result puts them very much into Olympic qualification zone, and this was only their first ever competition! :) Back in 2014 for example, a score of 125 was enough to qualify.

More about them...http://www.croskate.hr/hr/aktualno/predstavljanje-sportskog-para/

And let's not forget Nick Vrdoljak in men's singles, who has been scoring PBs lately... We suddenly have very nice team and it would be so cool if at least one of them can make it to Korea!

    • 2028 Team Size Projection – Jan 2026 Update   Here’s an update to my 2028 Team Size Projection. While I touch upon major events changes may occur due to results in smaller events. Additionally, several sports released their qualification document so there may be cases where I have to update the projection. I will only include sports where there is an update.   Here is the link to the updated sheet.     Aquatics (Water Polo) The Men’s European Championships saw take gold. The victory moved Serbia up a few places between European nations. With that said, no one fell out of Olympic qualification with the likes of France and Romania still on the outside looking in. remains on the edge.   Athletics (Marathon) Both the Xiamen and Osaka marathons were held this month along with a few other smaller events. While there were a few changes in the rankings, in terms of Olympic projections gains an athlete in the men’s marathon at the expense of   Badminton Major tournaments include the Malaysia Open and India Open. New updates which affected projections include the women’s doubles where overtook . As Polina Buhrova is also scheduled to compete in the singles event, an additional spot has been open. Other changes in the women’s singles was loses one of their quotas. and benefit from those losses.   Indonesia’s loss on the women’s side is offset by gaining a second player in the men’s singles. This puts   on the outside.   Canoeing The qualification document for both Slalom and Sprint were released/updated. No significant changes were found in the Sprint update. Slalom had significant changes relative to 2024 where the initial quotas will be decided by rankings and kayak cross will now have significant quotas being allocated. After adjustment, the following nations lost a quota; Andorra, Chinese Taipei, Ireland, New Zealand, North Macedonia, Slovakia, and Sweden. The following nations gained a quota; Canada, China, France, Italy, South Africa, Spain, and Tunisia.   Cricket The Women’s T20 World Cup Qualifier was held. No changes to the projection.   Equestrian (Dressage & Jumping) Various World Cup events were held. No changes to the projections were made.   Fencing We had two Grand Prix this month, one for epee and the other for sabre. In men’s epee, overtakes . On the women’s side, the United States moved into the top 4 in the team ranking, pushing Estonia down to fifth. This pushed out of Olympic qualification while takes the Americas quota. This caused a downstream effect on the individual side as Ukraine takes an individual quota and Canada relinquishes their quota, additionally, gained a quota while lost one.   In men’s sabre, now takes the Asian team quota pushing down to just an individual quota. No changes were found in women’s sabre.   Handball Four men’s continental championships were held this month. finished top in Africa while a couple of upsets were saw in South America and Asia where and won over and respectively. Despite their wins, they currently haven’t leapfrogged into being projected to qualify. We’ll see how they perform at the World Championships.   Europe saw finish fourth. This was enough to push it into Olympic qualification projection. They pushed out.   Rowing The qualification document was released. There was a change in boat allocation relative to 2024 and the continental qualifier was slightly different than what I projected. Additionally, I assumed coastal rowing would allow 2 men and 2 women to compete in its three events, but the max is 1 man and 1 woman. This has caused significant changes to the projections.   Overall, the United States lost four quotas. Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Lithuania, New Zealand, Norway, and Spain lost two quotas and Algeria, Argentina, Croatia, Cuba, Egypt, Kazakhstan, Netherlands, Portugal, Tunisia lost one quota.   The following nations have gained two athletes; Japan, Morocco while the following nations gained one athlete; Angola, Austria, Belgium, Chile, Chinese Taipei, Cote d’Ivoire, Denmark, Estonia, Kuwait, Latvia, Mexico, Romania, Philippines, Paraguay, Puerto Rico, South Africa, South Korea, Switzerland, Togo, Uzbekistan, Vanuatu   Rugby Sevens Fixing a couple of mistakes. First on the men, actually has the Asian quota over and in the women as is essentially shutting down the program, I think it is only right to remove them until they decide to compete again. This means is also projected to qualify.   As for new updates, we saw the third tier SVNS compete, which brought no new updates and the Singapore SVNS. I also didn’t add the Dubai or Cape Town SVNS in my calculations. For both, while there was some shuffling no one ultimately fell out.   Shooting The Asian Shotgun Championships were held this month. A few top shooters were missing. The only change to the projection is is set to qualify in women’s trap, pushing out   Squash The Tournament of Champions was held this month. Additionally, the qualification document was released. There was some restriction as to how many nations can send two players and this sport will offer universality quotas.   The following nations lost an athlete quota; Colombia, France, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and New Zealand. The following nations gained an athlete quota; Canada, Pakistan, Spain (x2), Switzerland, Ukraine   Triathlon The qualification document was released. There are a few changes relative to 2024. Projection changes include: Losses to Hong Kong and Slovenia and gains for Austria and China.   Weightlifting The qualification document was released. One change to be made was the reallocation process for host nation quotas. Due to this, El Salvador Iraq, Palau, Sri Lanka, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu lost quotas while Australia, China, Dominican Republic, Iran, and Samoa (x2) gained quotas.   Wrestling The qualification document was released. There were some significant changes to the qualification process including using the world rankings and the final qualifier only consisting of non-qualified nations. The projection changes are as follows; losses to Belarus, Bulgaria, China, Georgia, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Russia, South Korea, Sweden, and Turkey.   Belgium and Lithuania gained 2 quotas while American Samoa, Austria, Estonia, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Latvia, Madagascar, Spain, and Turkmenistan gained 1 quota.
    • Looks like we in the Philippines are in the same situation. No news yet on whether we’ll be able to watch the Games
    • Cricket is any day in a better position than Baseball, Modern Pentathlon or Rowing 8s globally
    • http://i.imgur.com/gLJZbix.jpg   Honestly football is just on another level. For other sports, an expanded field or creating multiple host cities likely only works with baseball, cricket and maybe basketball, and only in very specific countries.
    • No streaming for the games in India. I contacted IOC they just sent me a list where the games will be shown live.    Last games we had the Olympic channel and YouTube showing the live coverage for regions with no media rights. This time sadly no such schedule.   So much about making the games accessible to all...
    • What revealed those files of Epstein !!!! thousands of scandals , horrible diguisting things mixing politic criminalities , robbery , scam , manipulation...etc    all those celebrities of shht that you love
    • I wonder if instead of having flexibility around what sport to add there should be one or two team sports per game with an expanded field (of 16 or 32 or w/e) where the host gets to pick which which team sports (if any) has an expanded field.
    • Dunno if this is geoblocked, but this is from our weekly comedy show Saturday Night Live
    • I don't buy that she's doing this just to start the race if she thinks she won't be competitive.  We'll probably know more after the training run and far be it from me to know how that's going to work with a torn ACL, but if she knows she can't do it, she'll give that spot to another skier
