so far, the usual suspects I'd say...if it wasn't for that Gold & Silver for Great Britain :yikes:

1) Germany winning medals in women’s epee and women’s Sabre is very „unusual“.

2) Germany winning as many individual medals as Italy is very very unusual.

3) Russia only winning 1 individual medal might be the biggest surprise in the history of sports.

From a german perspective: The gold for Heathcock was expected, he is the biggest German talent since Leonie Ebert (who has been very disappointing for the past 2 or 3 years).

Attachment is the great fabricator of illusions; reality can be obtained only by someone who is detached.

1) c'mon! Germany winning medals in women's epee is not that unusual, maybe it doesn't happen as often as in the past, but it's still pretty regular...

however, I meant only that there were no new/surprising Nations winning the most medals, except for GBR (not looking at all at how many medals the "usual suspects" -ITA, FRA, RUS, HUN...even GER- won)...it wasn't an accurate analysis wepon by weapon...

2) considering what happened to our youth sports programs (especially in "contact sports") since the beginning of the pandemic, unfortunately that's gonna happen very often in the future...

Italian perspective in Fencing has really changed in the last few seasons...right now, we're not even close to the talent factory we used to be...

3) considering the current situation, I'm more surprised they're competing at this event rather than they're not winning that much (and in general, coming the current generation close to an end and without Cerioni and his crew not working anymore for them, I expect Russian Foil -especially the women- to get results not even comparable to their golden era of the last decade)...

tell me this is a joke! :yikes:

that must be a joke! :hairpull:

OK...that's beyond my resilience...I just give up...:stop:

Reportedly, other countries'federations had also agreed to not show up if they were to face Russia. And then Russia retired in the middle of the competition, just before the semis.

    • changes that go absolutely against the Italians (notoriously the top swimmers and not the best shooters in MP) 😭😭😭   now it's really time to axe MP from the Games 😈🥳
    • I think there was a feeling before the obstacle course was introduced that really, really solid endurance runners were starting to dominate - in Triathlon you might call it the Alex Yee conundrum. Personally, I don't mind at all if the 'martial' elements are reemphasised as that is the real 'soul' of the sport - Triathlon, Marathon and Road cycing are there for genuine endurace, MP is in some senses a 'soldiery' test - one reason I thought Judo might have been a better addition than the obstacle course. But placing a higher emphasis on the fight bits over the flight bits seems a legitimate idea - though it should also increase the X-country nature of the run so that the test of a fresh shooter at the beginning is rather different from the test of a knackered one at the end. I quite like the artificial hill in rio.
