Surfing Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024

Last friday we had the last stage of Challenger Series. Consequently new surfers for the 2023 season of WCT.

 

Then, I'd like to make an overview about the possibilites for each country

 

Men

 

/  are the favorites for take two quotas each. The other four quotas will be in contender among , Leonardo Fioravanti , Rio Waida , Maxime Huscenot , Ramzi Boukhiam , Kanoa Igarashi , Jordy Smith  and Matthew McGillivray . I am not sure if Carlos Munõz  will receive an invitation, once he got injured this season. 

 

Women

 

Here the things might be interesting.  and /  will take four of eight quotas.

 

But, there are only three surfers for the four quotas left. Brisa Hennessy , Johanne Defay  and Tatiana Weston-Webb . So, on this way, the last quota is going to be reallocated to ISA Games 2024.

 

However, we always have possibilities that a wildcard surfer, or even a replace for someone who got injured, participates in the circuit, conquer enough points to finish in the top 18, and take this place.

Decided to run a quick simulation now that we've had two events. Hawaiian athletes will represent the United States at the Olympics. Australia, Brazil, South Africa and the United States currently have two quotas. Ewing and O'Brien are tied for the second Australian quota while Igarashi and Waida are tied for the last quota.

Currently, there are only eight eligible athletes competing in the Championship Tour so the intra-national competition of Australia and Hawaii/United States may be the most interesting part going forward. However, there's a rule that an athlete must finish in the top 18 to be eligible to qualify so there's a chance of someone not reaching the cut-off and the quota being reallocated. Right now the pressure is on Defay to get healthy again

Robinson will take this Australian quota easily... he is in another level.

 

Medina and Italo are in trouble for Brazilian competition.

 

The qualification of two surfers from South Africa is an excellent thing for Boukhiam, whou couldnt compete in the first two events.

 

Huscenot, Waida e Munoz, the last is a replacement on the tour, need to improve their performance quickly to fight for their spot.

The women's competition will be quite boring. As you said only 8 eligible surfers, and this only because Teresa had the opportunity to compete. Otherwise it would be only 7 surfers.

 

The top 18 is not a hard thing as well, because surfers invited cant count for the ranking this year. Even though, Defay needs to avoid the last position, which could take her spot out.

Actually, I was thinking that the women's ranking were counting with 18 surfers without Teresa. But, it is counting 18 with her.

 

So, I think Defay don't even need to participate on the tour, to get her spot. May have a rule about being mandatory the presence in at least one event, so she could just take her board and enter in the sea, and the quota is her. Like some surfers do with the mandatory participation in ISA competitions.

I don't think ISA took into account the possibility of an injured athlete getting an Olympic quota. As far as I know, Defay still hasn't pulled out of the remaining events before the midseason cut, but it's hard to imagine she will be 100% for the third event which at that point she might as well rest and plan to requalify to the 2024 Championship Tour.

That's the point, we don't know if she has to participate or not. As I said, she could just take her board and get in any competition, just to say that she "competed". As for the requalification, she can receive an invitation for next year, because she got injured. But it depends on WSL's decision.

Chianca's victory places him as the top ranked Brazilian. Toledo's poor performance has allowed Caio Ibelli to be within striking distance. Callum Robson is now the second Australian thanks to his semifinal appearance. Rio Waida moves up to a safer position and with the mid-season cut-off approaching the race among the non-American/Australian/Brazilian spots is looking to be between five athletes (the four list above plus Igarashi).

Igarashi out of the qualified athletes is a huge surprise. They got a "third quota" at last ISA Games, and the easiest quota, he is not taking it. Also, Huscenot is a big disappointment from France.
