  21. TENNIS NEWS - Ramkumar Ramanathan opened his campaign in the $50,000 men’s Challenger tennis tournament in Lexington, US, with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Luke Saville of Australia. Former world No.1 Leander Paes in partnership with Andre Begemann of Germany made the doubles semifinals of the €85,000 men’s Challenger tennis tournament in Italy. The Indo-German combination won the quarterfinals 6-4, 5-7, 10-8 against Fabricio neis and Joao Souza of Brazil. Purav Raja and Divij Sharan also made the doubles semifinals of the €64,500 Challenger in Spain. Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan and Ramkumar Ramanathan made a thrilling entry into the doubles quarterfinals in the Lexington Challenger in the US with a 12-10 victory in the super tie-break against Brydan Klein of Britain and Andrew Whittington of Australia. However, Vishnu Vardhan in partnership with Toshihide Matsui of Japan, bowed out in the doubles quarterfinals in Kazakhstan, after having knocked out the top seeds in the first round. Vishnu and partner won $1280 and 18 ATP points.
  22. Davis Cupper Saketh Myneni went down with guns blazing against former world No.8 Radek Stepanek in the second and final qualifying round of the $4,691,730 Rogers Cup ATP Tour event in Toronto. The 37-year-old Stepanek, who had won the Australian Open and US Open with Leander Paes and was ranked a career-high No.4 in doubles, prevailed 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 6-4 in a battle of wits that lasted two hours and 32 minutes. The 28-year-old Saketh fired 14 aces but had eight doublefaults as well, as against four aces and five doublefaults by the Czech. While Saketh converted three of five breakpoints, Stepanek did one better from eight breakpoints that he forced. For his fine effort in the big league, Saketh collected $3,345 and 16 ATP points.
