  1. Maybe they wanted participation from all continents though even then it's likely everyone will be in attendance through team and individual qualifiers: Egypt for Africa, Canada/Mexico/United States for Americas, Australia for Oceania and various nations for Asia and Europe.
  2. More or less, though I guess you can consider the qualification round as part of the mixed team tournament. Overall this was done to make sure at least 16 NOCs have a male and female archer.
  3. This is the Road to Buenos Aires series which is hosted in each continent. The African Qualifiers happened in 2017 where Egypt and Tunisia qualified in the boys' and Egypt and Nigeria qualified in the girls'.
  4. Only the top 4 athletes will be eligible for the quota places. If you are unable to award someone the place will be reallocated to the Final Individual Qualification Tournament. So basically Asia will lose out.
  5. The table tennis event is opened for all nations, you can see the entry list here. Other qualifying events this week will be the Asian Beach Volleyball Qualifier and the Oceania Triathlon Qualifier.
  6. That's where things are heading, but there's a lot of push-back from the crown dependencies/other territories that compete at the games, but not necessarily internationally (because they don't have a recognized sport federation). I wouldn't mind just giving everyone 15-20 individual spots that decrease as you qualify athletes
  7. Suspensions for banned nations in weightlifting lifted early at youth level so they can compete at the Youth Olympics Link
  8. It's a good way to gain experience from multi-sport events like being part of a village. Canada uses the Commonwealth and Pan American Games to that extent.
  9. Medals aren't tied to any event, it's more the summation of all the chances a nation has. The vacancies are to prevent other nations from gaining an unfair boost to their chances. I used the 2016-17 World League for hockey and the World Cup Final and World Shotgun Championships for shooting. Equestrian and women's football did not have anything that I could of used.
  10. 1) A combination of things. Some events did not have a top tier championship/ranking. Some events had too many athletes from the same nation, for example, China had 5 quarter-finalists in women's singles table tennis, but only two were actually counted, leaving the rest as blanks. Weightlifting is also missing a bunch of spots in anticipation that the banned nations will return (I was still very generous with the results, Mexico is looking at a potential of two medals). 2) Basically the formula thinks the United States has overperformed while Canada has underperformed in 2017. From a medals perspective Canada had a pretty bad year, but from an overall picture Canada did pretty well. Athletics is a good example, 0 medals, yet 12 top 8 performances. 3) Germany was a step behind Great Britain and France in 2017 thus the medals show that. Hockey and shooting are both included, Germany is expected to get 0-2 and 2-5 medals respectively.
  11. Here are my predictions based off of 2017 results. Note, not all events had world championships/equivalents, biggest being women's boxing and equestrian. Weightlifting has been adjusted due to many nations missing out (though the nations missing out aren't compensated). Also nations with only one medal chance have been rounded down to 0 and I have not excluded any athletes which have retired. United States - 102 Russia - 61 China - 60 Great Britain - 46 France - 44 Japan - 43 Germany - 37 Australia - 30 Italy - 29 Canada - 26 Netherlands - 26 Poland - 24 South Korea - 22 Hungary - 21 Spain - 21 Ukraine - 18 Brazil - 16 New Zealand - 15 Belarus - 12 Czech Republic - 12 Turkey - 12 Cuba - 11 Switzerland - 10 Denmark - 9 Iran - 9 Kenya - 9 Serbia - 9 Sweden - 9 Colombia - 8 Georgia - 8 Mexico - 8 Azerbaijan - 7 Belgium - 7 Croatia - 7 Jamaica - 7 Uzbekistan - 7 Ethiopia - 6 India - 6 Kazakhstan - 6 Lithuania - 6 Mongolia - 6 Chinese Taipei - 6 Greece - 5 Norway - 5 Romania - 5 Slovakia - 5 Slovenia - 5 South Africa - 5 Thailand - 5 Austria - 4 Bulgaria - 4 Portugal - 4 Bahrain - 3 Dominican Republic - 3 Egypt - 3 Estonia - 3 Hong Kong - 3 Israel - 3 Morocco - 3 North Korea - 3 Trinidad and Tobago - 3 Venezuela - 3 Argentina - 2 Armenia - 2 Bahamas - 2 Botswana - 2 Chile - 2 Ecuador - 2 Finland - 2 Indonesia - 2 Ireland - 2 Latvia - 2 Malaysia - 2 Qatar - 2 Singapore - 2 Tunisia - 2 Vietnam - 2 Albania - 1 Cote d'Ivoire - 1 Cyprus - 1 Eritrea - 1 Fiji - 1 Guatemala - 1 Kyrgyzstan - 1 Moldova - 1 Montenegro - 1 Nigeria - 1 Puerto Rico - 1 Tajikistan - 1 Turkmenistan - 1 Zambia - 1
  12. Table Tennis qualifiers for the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games
  13. I'm trying to construct a list of qualified nations to the 2018 Central American and Caribbean Games. For fencing there was a qualification tournament in San Juan from April 30th - May 7th 2017. I've found a results page, but it does not include the results of the men's team sabre and women's team foil events. The events occurred as I know the medalists (VEN, COL, MEX for men and VEN, CUB, MEX for women). Does anyone have a results database that may include those results?
  14. I agree, there's no reason to not have a bunch of events at the World Championship though they should spend a few years introducing it at world cup to increase participation.
  15. Athletics and aquatics are much more popular than track cycling
  16. The elimination race is great to watch. I imagine the UCI doesn't want another long distance event, especially one that would be around the same distance as the scratch race, even if the strategies within the events are different.
  17. Here's a comparison of what GraceNote predicted and what we got. Medals Correctly Predicted Gold - Freestyle Skiing - Men's Moguls - M. Kingsbury (Got Gold) Silver - Ice Hockey - Women's Team (Got Silver) Silver - Speed Skating - Men.s 5000m - T. Bloemen (Got Silver) Bronze - Figure Skating - Pairs - Duhamel/Radford (Got Bronze) Bronze - Short Track - Men's 5000m Relay (Got Bronze) Most of these medals were quite likely Medals Predicted, but Wrong Colour Gold - Bobsleigh - Women's 2-man - K. Humphries (Got Bronze) Gold - Ice Hockey - Men's Team (Got Bronze) Gold - Snowboarding - Men's Slopestyle - M. McMorris (Got Bronze) Silver - Bobsleigh - Men's 2-man - J. Kripps (Got Gold) Silver - Curling - Mixed Team (Got Gold) Silver - Figure Skating - Ice Dancing - Moir/Virtue (Got Gold) Bronze - Freestyle Skiing - Women's Halfpipe - C. Sharpe (Got Gold) Bronze - Freestyle Skiing - Women's Moguls - J. Dufour-Lapointe (Got Silver) Bronze - Speed Skating - Men's 10,000m - T. Bloemen (Got Gold) Six slight overperformance and three slight underperformance wasn't too bad. Medals Predicted, but Wrong Athlete Gold - Snowboarding - Men's Big Air - M. Parrot (S. Toutant, Got Gold) Silver - Short Track - Men's 1000m - C. Hamelin (S. Girard, Got Gold) Silver - Short Track - Women's 500m - M. St-Gelais (K. Boutin, Got Bronze) Bronze - Short Track - Women's 1000m - M. St-Gelais (K. Boutin, Got Silver) Bronze - Short Track - Women's 1500m - M. St-Gelais (K. Boutin, Got Bronze) Boutin really saved short track from underperforming by more than expected and it covers St-Gelais who was expected to win four medals and won zero. Medals Predicted, but Failed to Obtain Gold - Curling - Men's Team (Got 4th) Gold - Curling - Women's Team (Got 6th) Silver - Short Track - Men's 1500m - C. Hamelin (Got PEN in Final) Silver - Speed Skating - Women's Mass Start - I. Blondin (Got 18th) Bronze - Short Track - Men's 1500m - S. Girard (Got 4th) Bronze - Short Track - Women's 3000m Relay (Got PEN in Final) Bronze - Snowboarding - Men's Big Air - M. McMorris (Got 10th) Bronze - Speed Skating - Women's 5000m - I. Blondin (Got 5th) Bronze - Speed Skating - Men's Team Pursuit (Got 7th) Curling was very disappointing as we all know. Short track and speed skating also underperformed, but that happens when you rely too much on a single athlete. Medals Not Predicted, but Obtained Figure Skating - Team Trophy (Got Gold) Figure Skating - Women's Singles - K. Osmond (Got Bronze) Freestyle Skiing - Men's Ski Cross - B. Leman (Got Gold) Freestyle Skiing - Women's Ski Cross - K, Serwa (Got Gold) Freestyle Skiing - Women's Ski Cross - B. Phelan (Got Silver) Freestyle Skiing - Men's Slopestyle - A. Beaulieu-Marchand (Got Bronze) Luge - Team Relay (Got Silver) Luge - Women's Singles - A. Gough (Got Bronze) Snowboarding - Men's Slopestyle - M. Parrot (Got Silver) Snowboarding - Women's Slopestyle - L. Blouin (Got Silver) It's ridiculous that they didn't predict a medal in figure skating team trophy. Everything else you could have argued that Canada may not have gotten top 3 in.
  18. Technically you can catch the golden snitch and still lose if your team is behind by more than 150 points. Mass start does not have that. You might as well make the race into a 2-4 lap race because that's all that matters.
  19. She couldn't outsprint the top athletes, the only way she could win would be to start strong and hope the pack ignores her until it was too late. At worst you'll get fourth with that strategy.
  20. Both teams have won world championships while Koe had two members of Kevin Martin's 2010 gold medal team. Politics may have been at play though. The fact that they forced Homan to change her alternate because "she didn't fit the criteria" was ridiculous. If she was good enough to compete at the worlds, she's good enough to compete at the Olympics.
  21. I'm not sure what can be done outside of forcing our four best curlers into a team and have them compete together. How would you even go on to decide that? I think we have to realize that the rest of the world has caught up to Canada. They may not have the depth, but that doesn't matter at the Olympics since only one team competes.
  22. The IOC had no choice, but to stop insurance payments. The NBA and various European football leagues were starting to demand the same thing.
  23. Canada played poorly in the second half of the first period, we're not going to do anything with that kind of play.
