    I think that’s the right principle. The Olympic Games should be the summit of that particular sport, so yes to basketball, volleyball, ice hockey, women’s football, softball*, sevens rugby etc, but no to golf, men’s football, baseball*, tennis. * You can have softball without baseball because the pitches are a lot smaller.

    We are off with the climbing. Probably doomed group 8 minutes up - George Bennett the only one with a chance of holding out. Hadn’t realised, or my brain hadn’t processed, but Bernal is still young enough to be in the White Jersey competition. Hmm. Some gaps developing on the descent from the first climb. Bernal & Vlasov in the good place, everyone else having to work hard to get back.

    Two unusual things happened today 1.) Dead men rose from their graves & walked. 2.) Giacomo Nizzolo won a sprint in the Giro.

    Every bit as exciting as billed. Breakaway is in sight, peloton is formed up in serried ranks, historic monuments are getting lavish coverage. 28k to go. Big news of the day so far: Riders are now allowed to throw their empty bidons to fans at the side of the road. Will revolutionise the sport.

    It’s a double bill on Sunday night with the Gateshead DL (other thread) and then 30 minutes later the Boston World Continental Gold meet on YouTube.     Standards of rain-jacket deployment in the peloton are continuing to regress. Looking like one of those neutralised mountain days so far. Break is going to provide the winner, peloton getting off their bikes to pick mushrooms.
