Cmon Mary reacted to mpjmcevoy in Team GB Daily: Day 10
There's a brilliant poem by Patrick Kavanagh called 'Epic' about local land squabbles during 1938 - he expresses despair at how parochial and lame these neighbourhood fights are compared to truly global events like the betrayal of Czechoslovakia ("That was the year of the Munich bother"), but then mentions that Homer whispers in his ear - perhaps the same one who winks at us with Kipling...
"I made the Illiad from such a local row.
Gods make their own importance."
That's sport. All sport is trivial, all sport is farcical, stripped down to its mere actions. There's nothing noble about running around in circles, or pedalling contraptions, are kicking a pig bladder, or pushing your way around an inflatable buoy...
Except the wanting makes it noble. Novak's hand trembling makes it noble. Alcaraz being consoled by his family make it noble. Scottie Scheffler crying when winning Majors didn't bring a tear make it noble. eEmco Evenepoel in utter panic at a hole in his tyre a minute from the line made it noble, and yes, a World champion canoeist screaming with delight at winning bronze in a novelty race makes it noble.
That's the secret of all sport. Gods make their own importance.

It may be one of the others is ill/off form and they therefore cannot spare Hayter in the heats of the TP.
It does seem bizarre that GB went to the trouble of qualifying two entries for both TTs and then don't bother using the second one in each.

Cmon Mary got a reaction from Epic Failure in Almost-Brits at the 2024 Olympics
Don’t forget Noemi Fox, her sister, also in the KX. And Cindy Ngamba (Boxing W75), competing for the Refugee team but training with the rest of the British squad, seems to have been claimed as GB by the British press. I think there are one or two other refugees that are training here as well.

I've been meaning to post this for a while, but I thought it would be fun to try and track the 'almost' Brits competing here, who we can root for and claim half a medal if they do well (especially if they are in events where there are no actual Brits for us to cheer for)
I'm sure it is a lengthy list, but here's a few to get started. Add more if you know them!
The Irish team obviously has plenty of Ulster men and women. That includes Dan Wiffen, who also attends Loughborough University. There are plenty of other swimmers who either train in the UK or have done previously, including the Hansson sisters from Sweden, Felix Aubock from Austria and, of course, Reuta Meilutyte.
Jessica Fox (Australia, canoe slalom) - she's the daughter of Richard Fox who competed in the same event for GBR.
Chase Jackson (USA, shot) - she is married to a Brit and I believe she lives and trains there.
Larissa Iapichino (Italy, long jump) - she's the daughter of Fiona May, who jumped for GBR and then (much more successfully) for Italy.

I think the points have to change - it's the rank of the pair, not some notional rank of the country. FWIW I think the doubles ranking of Watson (47)will be sufficent to get a mixed doubles spot with Salisbury (6) - total 53, there will undoubtedly be a withdrawal or two, or a tired singles player who can't/won't do all 3 (like boulter, for example!)
i think Dart/Lumsden might currently be first or second reserve in women's doubles...

announced their team - Joe Choong and Kate French joined by teammates Myles Pillage and Kerenza Bryson. No real surprise after French's performance at the recent World Champs.

Tarling is a serious contender for the TT - so looking forward to seeing how he does.

Men’s road:
Ethan Hayter (TT)
Tom Pidcock
Josh Tarling (TT/RR)
Stevie Williams
Fred Wright
Really complicated - Pidcock also one of two picks for MTB but obviously has sights on two Golds, as does Hayter who is Road TT and Track TP. (Women to be announced 4 July.)

Well, by god, they've gone and bloody done it!
Tom Pidcock will double up in road race and mountain bike!
Ethan Hayter will double up in time trial and Team Pursuit, Tarling pulls out of the team pursuit, who can now maximise quotas
https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cycling/articles/c4nnd49w9rmo
Team GB cycling squad
Men's track endurance: Dan Bigham, Ethan Hayter, Charlie Tanfield, Ethan Vernon, Ollie Wood, Mark Stewart (travelling reserve)
Men's track sprint: Jack Carlin, Ed Lowe, Hamish Turnbull, Joe Truman (travelling reserve)
Men's road: Ethan Hayter (time trial), Tom Pidcock (road race), Josh Tarling (time trial and road race), Stevie Williams (road race), Fred Wright (road race)
Women's track sprint: Sophie Capewell, Emma Finucane, Katy Marchant, Lowri Thomas (travelling reserve)
Women's mountain bike: Ella Maclean-Howell, Evie Richards
Men's mountain bike: Charlie Aldridge, Tom Pidcock
Very interesting Men's road team - no Geraint Thomas, nor Mark Cavendish, Tarling obviously the engine then three climb-capable puncheurs in Pidcock (Amstel gold winner this year, Strade Bianche last), Stevie Williams (who won Fleche Wallone this year) and Fred Wright, perennial runner up, and Ethan Hayters housemate! I meantion those three races because, as one day races, they're basically the ost prestigious after the five monuments - and the ones that have similarities to the Frence parcours.
Women's road team yet to be announced, as well as BMX (although Reilly is already booked by named quota), and Women's endurance.

Cmon Mary got a reaction from Benolympique in Slalom Canoeing Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024
Confirmation of position - Burgess added to MKX along with Clarke, but no change to Woods/Franklin in WKX. (Subject to ratification by BOA.) If so, the additional KX quota will have to be returned.

Interesting Franklin only doing the KX at this weekend's World Cup, after some average results in recent races. I am a bit surprised they did not swap her out and put Setchell into the KX after her performance last weekend. Otherwise seems little point in entering the Women's race last week if you are not changing anything.

Conor Hall officially in 5th place - means if either of , or get 1st in the Team competition later this week (or 2nd behind ) then at least gets an Individul quota. Unless of course could get the Team quota???

comprises athletes from Russia and Belarus. I could be wrong, but I think that one of the athletes that qualified here - Georgii Gurtsiev - is from so it would still be within the 2 per NOC rules.

Cmon Mary reacted to Rafa Maciel in Track Cycling Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024
The Olympic track rankings on the UCI website were a bit of a mess towards the end of last year too so we shouldn't be too surprised that they are wrong again.
haven't dropped to 13th - not only have the UCI not added the 2024 European Champs points, but they have also removed the 2023 points so all the European nations have dropped back.
I ran the new points totals during the European champs and put them on the European Championship thread but basically GB would move up to 9th but that will only be until the Asian champs are done at the end of Feb.
When you factor in the likelihood that China will be 2nd in Asia, GB will drop back down to 11th but will have reduce the gap on both Belgium and China ahead of the Nations Cup.

The new bulletin answered that. Basically many many points.
We will have the pro tour in Dubai in march and then OQS in Xangai and Budapest for both park ans street

Cmon Mary reacted to Laraja in Skateboarding Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024
F
It only counts points to rankings. We don't know in which level will World Skate put these competitions. For Tokyo they had 5 scales, and now they just separated in Pro Tour and Worlds... I don't think they are going to change it, and I believe they will consider these events as Pro Tour.
Meanwhile, I think they will schedule other events to complete their calendar. We don't have any other skateboarding events this year, and only two until the games seems so few.
