  1. Lauren Williams has withdrawn from the competition due to hamstring injury. That's going to hurt her hope of claiming a Taekwondo quota through the direct rankings route.
  2. It might not even need to be a quarter - sometimes just 4 minutes of play is enough for us to collapse
  3. I don't see many scenarios where win, but equally I don't think we will see a repeat of the 81-55 loss inflicted the last time the teams competed in the 2019 EuroBasket 3rd/4th playoff match. Will probably come down to which team is able to put the disappointment of today behind them the quickest. Serbia aren't playing as well as they have previously so it is possible that if GBR can put them under pressure early on, it could be close but most likely scenario is that Serbia take the win by something in the region of a 5-15 point margin. Ultimately, GBR were let down today by their free throw conversion rate which was just 50% and they must be kicking themselves because with the mess in the other groups, they had a great opportunity to get to the quarters and put themselves in strong position to get into the Olympic qualifying tournament. Now, the chances are that they will lose on Tuesday, fail to make the quarters, have no place in the OQT and will end up with UK Sport cutting their funding so all in all, today could prove an expensive loss.
  4. Am I right in thinking that would be based on beating in the final group match?
  5. Don't think Hungary are out of contention for quarter finals yet. They've got about 30 point cushion in points difference from Turkey. If they can keep Serbia close then good chance they could finish 2nd in the group. Either way, they will qualify for the next stage of the competition and would be up against runners up from Group C - likely to be GBR or Slovenia - and given how well they've played in their first 2 matches and although they'd be the lower ranked team, they have the ability to win either of those matches.
  6. Somehow Team GB managed to sneak out a victory 76-71. Definitely a much stronger 2nd half for them - and a particularly tidy 4th quarter where they only gave away 1 foul. Should be enough to get them into the next stage where they would be likely to face either Turkey or Hungary. BUT, they really can't afford a repeat of those 5 minutes across the end of Q1/early Q2 where they conceded 16 points without response. They're against tomorrow - the match which will probably decide who will top the group. The two teams played a friendly last week and France were comfortable winners 76-54.
  7. Much better performance from in the second quarter to narrow the gap 5 points but the last 2 minutes of the 1st quarter might prove very costly for them.
  8. having the kind of collapse we're used to seeing from the cricket team
  9. From a ranking perspective, the first 3 games of the tournament have all resulted in "upsets" - with the 3rd ranked team beating the 2nd ranked team in the pool. I am hoping that will be a good omen for as we take on Slovenia later today but given the results from their recent warm-up matches, I've got my doubts.
  10. I think the schedule for each sport has been available for a while - it's available towards the bottom of each individual sport's page
  11. Don't think you've got the right results for the men. Should be: 1. Toby Roberts 2. Dohyun Lee 3. Yoshiyuki Ogata
  12. Pretty solid day for on the first day of the Rome Grand Prix Gold for Jade Jones Gold for Caden Cunningham Bradley Sinden had a bit of an off day though as he exits in round of 16. From ranking perspective, that should help solidify Jones' position in the rankings and will move Cunningham closer to automatic quota spot
  13. Unfortunately I don't agree with the central premise that most people want to see men's tennis - that was the same argument used to justify lower prize money for women and it wasn't defensible then and isn't defensible now. The popularity of women's sport, including tennis has been growing over the last few years. That being said, of course there are marquee names in the men's draw who absolutely are a major driver of ticket sales and deserve the prestige of a night match - but I wouldn't say that Zverez was one of those people and I certainly don't believe that Caroline Garcia is not as big a draw as Jannik Sinner. I get that some people don't like/want to play at night - but frankly you play when you're told to play. 4 night matches in two and a half years just comes across as a lack of respect for the women's game.
  14. So 8 days into the tournament and so far only 1 women's match has been deemed of sufficient quality to grace the night session on Chatrier. Alexander Zverev is tonight racking up his 4th night session match - that's the same number of night matches the women's tour have had across 3 years. This year alone, Zverev, who is seeded 22, has had 3 night session matches and yet Caroline Garcia - home favourite and 5th seed - wasn't deemed good enough to warrant a night match. Nor was Ons Jabeur when she took on a French woman in round 2. Surely somebody within that organizing committee has the balls to stand up and say that their handling of the scheduling can't be right. They are making themselves look a laughing stock.
  15. Team GB athletics squad due to be announced on Wednesday according to their selection policy docs.
  16. Russian Armed Forces sergeant stuns world number one at IJF Dushanbe Grand Prix (insidethegames.biz) Assuming this story is correct and Bashaev is a sergeant in the Russian army, how the hell did he qualify as a neutral athlete????
  17. Double win for Shriever is a great result but her performances are to large extent papering over the lack of depth we currently have in the women's event. GBR is the only country in the top 10 ranked nations that only counts 2 riders in the ranking score as opposed to 3 and despite that, they're likely to move up to 5th or 6th in the next Olympic ranking list
  18. Very disappointing result for Vittoria Farmer in the round 3 repechage - she had the highest single scoring wave at 8.33 but could only manage a 0.83 second score. Think she becomes the first Brit to exit the competition - the rest of the guys/girls are in all in repechage action.
  19. The host nation has always taken the continental qualification spot - in 2015 Canada won the Pan-Am games but didn't get a quota. So from a team perspective, this year is no different to what has gone before. For the duet, there is still a European quota available and this will be awarded at the European Games later this month. As per the qualification document: "The best duet with combined results (Duet Technical + Duet Free), not yet qualified, will earn quota place for Paris 2024 Olympic Games" Again that doesn't seem to be any different to the qualification pathways used for Rio or Tokyo.
  20. It was a great result for France but to be fair, given their riders comprised more than 20% of the total in the field and they are the top ranked nation, it would have been pretty surprising if they hadn't featured pretty heavily in the final results.
  21. Difficult to see from the picture whether Choong was ahead when he fell or not, but it potentially complicates team GB qualification a little - had Choong won, there was a chance we would have been well placed with Pillage or Brown to be 1 of the top 8 at the European games to close out our qualification for Paris. With Choong now likely to qualify via the European games, it means our second quota will probably have to come via the ranking list and at the moment, our guys are ranked in the mid 30s which may not be enough to make the cut.
  22. Great effort from British women to get 2 through to round 3. Unfortunately because of the way that the draw has worked out, they will both line up in the same heat. They're up against USA's Caroline Marks who scored 17.67 and France's Pauline Ado who scored 11.1. Neither of the Brits have made it into double figures yet, so looks likely they will both be heading into repechage.
  23. Alys Barton sends Luana Silva to the repechage in round 2.
  24. So Joe Choong safely qualifies for this weekend's final but Myles Pillage and Charlie Brown both miss out. Pillage's downfall was his poor fencing results because he is a sub 2 minute swimmer and his run was 11:30. Likewise Charlie Brown's swimming time is on par with Choong and his laser run time was under 11 minutes but again, he had only managed 12 fencing wins.
  25. Biggest shock of the year so far - Sam Hall is actually still listed in the 60Kg draw for Dushanbe Grand Prix No all we need is for him to win the gold and propel himself into a qualifying position
