  1. Psych sheets are now out for the 2023 Canadian Swimming Trials https://www.swimming.ca/content/uploads/2022/07/20230322-CANTRIALS-psychsheet-01.pdf Canadian Swim Trials Preview (There’ll be a separate preview for the para-swimmers coming out soon) Notes: - Although they may not be contenders this year, keep an eye out for Laon Kim, Halle West, Regan Rathwell, Maxine Clark, and Lorne Wigginton. They are all promising swimmers with bright futures ahead. - Penny Olesiak is still recovering from her surgery (Read More Here), and therefore will skip the Canadian Trials this year. Still wonder if she’ll be eligible for the relays at the 2023 World Championships, with direct qualification to the Olympics being awarded to the top three nations in each of the three relays (4x200 free, 4x100 free, 4x100 medley) it will be a BIG hit to our chances should she not compete. - Summer McIntosh will be competing in the 200m/400m Freestyle, 200/400 Individual Medley, 200m Butterfly. These are her five best events, so no real surprises here. She’ll be the favourite in all five of her individual events, and it’s almost a guarantee that she’ll meet the FINA A standard for World Championships in every single one of them. - Kylie Masse will be competing in the 50/100/200m Backstroke, 50m Butterfly. She almost never competes in butterfly, so I’m a bit surprised to see it on her programme. - Maggie MacNeil will be competing in the 100 Butterfly, 50/100m Freestyle. - Josh Liendo will be competing in the 50/100m Freestyle and 50/100m Butterfly. Previewing each event at the Trials; * Expected to contend means that they could potentially make the team for Worlds, NOT that they’ll have a chance against the favorites. Just needed to clarify. Women’s Events Women’s 50m Freestyle: Although coming into this meet seeded fourth, I’d have to say Maggie MacNeil would be the favourite (25.78 - FINA B). Rebecca Smith (25.70 - FINA B), Katerine Savard (26.07 - FINA B), and Hannah Cornish (25.58 - FINA B) are expected to be the other main contenders. Backstroke specialist Ingrid Wilm will also be competing, and is one of the lower seeds to watch out for (26.23). Women’s 100m Freestyle: Taylor Ruck comes into this meet as the top seed (53.99 - FINA A) but Maggie MacNeil (54.38 - FINA B) will provide a tough challenge. Rebecca Smith (55.21 - FINA B), Katerine Savard (55.22 - FINA B) and Mary Sophie-Harvey (55.39 - FINA B) are also expected to contend. Women’s 200m Freestyle: Summer McIntosh again will be the number one seed (Unsurprisingly) with a time of 1:54.13 (Under the FINA A standard). Taylor Ruck (1:57.60 - FINA A), Mary Sophie-Harvey (1:57.94 - FINA A), Katerine Savard (1:58.28 - FINA A), Ella Jansen (1:58.30 - FINA A) and Rebecca Smith (1:58.48 - FINA A) are all expected to contend for that second quota. Women’s 400m Freestyle: Summer McIntosh will be the overwhelming favourite here (3:59.79 - FINA A) but youngster Ella Jansen (4:07.18 - FINA A) will also be looking to qualify. Katrina Bellio has an entry time under the FINA B Standard (4:11.06) and is expected to contend as well. Women’s 800m Freestyle: Abby Dunford comes into this meet as the number one seed (8:38.06 - FINA B). Mabel Zavaros (8:42.16 - FINA B), and Emma Finlin (8:42.54 - FINA B) are other athletes expected to contend. Women’s 1500m Freeststyle: Abby Dunford comes into this meet as the number one seed (16:20.26 - FINA A) with an entry time comfortably faster than second seed Emma Finlin (16:31.49 - FINA B). Women’s 200m Individual Medley: Summer McIntosh comes into this meet as the top seed (2:08.08 - FINA A). Mary Sophie-Harvey (2:10.22 - FINA A), Sydney Pickrem (2:10.58 - FINA A), and Tessa Cieplucha (2:12.03 - FINA A) are expected to be contending for that second quota. Women’s 400m Individual Medley: Summer McIntosh comes into this meet as the top seed (4:28.61 - FINA A). Tessa Cieplucha (4:39.49 - FINA A), Ella Jansen (4:40.17 - FINA A), Mabel Zavaros (4:41.52 - FINA A), and Sydney Pickrem (4:43.31 - FINA B) are expected to be contending for that second quota. Women‘s 50m Butterfly: Katerine Savard comes into this meet as the top seed (26.14). But with Kamryn Cannings (26.92 - FINA A), Kylie Masse (26.96 - FINA A) and Ingrid Wilm (27.26 - FINA A) all competing, it’ll be a dogfight for the two available quotas. Women’s 100m Butterfly: World & Olympic Champion Maggie MacNeil comes into this meet with the top seed (56.36 - FINA A). Katerine Savard (57.86 - FINA A) and Rebecca Smith (58.15 - FINA A) are expected to be her biggest contenders. Women’s 200m Butterfly: Summer McIntosh is the heavy favourite for the title (2:05.05 - FINA A). Mabel Zavaros (2:11.68 - FINA B) is the second seed. Women’s 50m Backstroke: Kylie Masse (27.18 - FINA A) is the heavy favourite. Ingrid Wilm is the second seed, with the only other sub-28 entry time in the field (27.66 - FINA A) Women’s 100m Backstroke: Would be suprised if anyone other than Kylie Masse (58.39 - FINA A) managed to win. Of course, you can never count out Ingrid Wilm (59.47 - FINA A) and Taylor Ruck (59.67 - FINA A) Women’s 200m Backstroke: Kylie Masse yet again is the favourite (2:07.66 - FINA A), and should secure a quota. Ingrid Wilm (2:11.61 - FINA B) is also expected to contend, although will need to drop a few seconds in order to secure a second quota for Canada. Notable scratch here as Taylor Ruck isn’t competing, she placed sixth at the Tokyo Olympics in this event. Women’s 50m Breastroke: Rachel Nicol comes into this event as the top seed (31.24 - FINA B). Sophie Angus (31.47 - FINA B), Sydney Pickrem (31.51 - FINA B) are also expected to contend. Kelsey Wog (32.21) is further down in the seedings, but she’ll be expected to contend as well. Women’s 100m Breastroke: Sophie Angus comes into this event as the top seed, with an entry time of 1:07.60 - FINA B. Kelsey Wog (1:08.04 - FINA B), Rachel Nicol (1:08.13 - FINA B), and Sydney Pickrem (1:08.92 - FINA B) are also expected to contend. All four swimmers currently have entry times under the FINA B standard. Women’s 200m Breastroke: Kelsey Wog is coming into this event with an entry time of 2:23.82 - FINA A, which is almost three seconds faster than second seed Rachel Nicol (2:26.75 - FINA B). Cieplucha (2:26.84 - FINA B), Pickrem (2:27.58 - FINA B), Sophie-Harvey (2:28.82 - FINA B) will also be looking to amount a challenge. Men’s Events Men’s 50m Freestyle: Josh Liendo comes into this meet as the top seed (21.63 - FINA A). He should run away with the win by a fair margin. Men’s 100m Freestyle: Josh Liendo comes into this meet as the top seed (47.55 - FINA A). Javier Acevado (49.12 - FINA B), Finlay Knox (49.23 - FINA B) and Stephen Calkins (49.65 - FINA B) are also expected to contend. Men’s 200m Freestyle: Finlay Knox comes into the meet as the top seed (1:47.92 - FINA A) and is the heavy favourite in this event. Men’s 400m Freestyle: Alex Axon comes into this meet as the top seed (3:52.07 - FINA B), ahead of Eric Brown (3:52.70 - FINA B). Men’s 800m Freestyle: Eric Brown comes into this meet as the top seed (7:59.68 - FINA B) ahead of Alex Axon (8:02.24 - FINA B) Men’s 1500m Freestyle: Eric Brown comes into this meet as the top seed (15:17.46 - FINA B) ahead of Alex Axon (15:31.93 - FINA B) Men’s 200 Individual Medley: Finlay Knox comes into this meet as the top seed (1:57.30 - FINA A). Illya Kharun (2:02.41 - FINA B) and Collyn Gagne (2:00.37 - FINA B) are other athletes to keep an eye on. Men’s 400m Individual Medley: Collyn Gagne comes into this meet as the top seed (4:17.82 - FINA B). Lorne Wigginton (4:19.40 - FINA B) is another title contender. Men’s 50m Butterfly: Josh Liendo comes into this meet as the top seed (23.42 - FINA A) ahead of Illya Kharun (23.90 - FINA B) and Stephen Calkins (24.21 - FINA B). Men’s 100m Butterfly: Josh Liendo comes into this meet as the top seed (50.88 - FINA A), ahead of Finlay Knox (51.86 - FINA A) and Illya Kharun (52.31 - FINA B). Kharun is a very promising swimmer btw. Men’s race of the meet in my opinion. Men’s 200m Butterfly: Illya Kharun comes into this meet as the top seed (1:55.66 - FINA A). He should win the title comfortably. Men’s 50m Breastroke: Gabe Mastromatteo comes into this meet as the top seed (27.53 - FINA B) ahead of James Dergousoff (27.83 - FINA B). Men’s 100m Breastroke: James Dergousoff comes into this meet as the top seed (1:00.86 - FINA B) ahead of Olympian Gabe Mastromatteo (1:01.38 - FINA B) Men’s 200m Breastroke: James Dergousoff comes into this meet as the top seed (2:12.33 - FINA B) while Finlay Knox (2:13.96 - FINA B) is also one to watch out for. Men’s 50m Backstroke: Javier Acevado comes into this meet as the top seed (24.97 - FINA A). Should win by a fair margin. Men’s 100m Backstroke: Blake Tierney comes into this meet as the top seed (54.45 - FINA B), while Javier Acevado (54.81 - FINA B) is the second seed. Men’s 200m Backstroke: Richie Stokes comes into this meet as the top seed (1:58.79 - FINA B) ahead of Blake Tierney (1:59.19 - FINA B) LOL this took me like two hours to do. But oh well, have nothing better to be doing
  2. Justine Dufour-Lapointe takes second (68.33) behind Italian Arianna Tricomi (80.67), and as a result she’ll be headed into the final stop (Vebier) with the yellow bib, 2620 pts ahead of American Molly Aramanino.
  3. Katie Anderson secures the FreeRide World Tour title in women’s snowboard with her third win of the season (70.67) just ahead of Austrian Manuela Mandl (69.33)
