Grass specialist or not, when you're leading 6-0, 4-1 and even get five matchpoints and you still lose the final (at home), that's really nothing else but a huge, huge choke :p

    Of course it is.

Still, WTA has become surface-dependent in the last few years. Top players focus on their best surface and try to maximize their results there. Turnarounds like Sharapova going from 06 16 defeats on clay to win Roland Garros are almost impossible these days.

It went totally downhill after a huge choke against Alison Riske of all people in Rosmalen in 2019. From then on, it was gone, with only a good moment here and there and nothing more.

Too bad, she of course has had a career most professionals won't reach (like basically anyone who's been top-10 for a while), but there was much more in it than she got out of it.

Riske is a grass speciallist tbh. Bertens should have made her best surface count and she didn't after beating Halep in Madrid final.

  3. Sadly she completely blew it at Roland Garros 2019 when she was one of the faves after winning Madrid. And she never did anything since (save for winning St. Petersburg). Fast forward two years and Krejcikova is a GS champion while Bertens completely missed her 5 seconds of fame window. It was there to be had for Bertens but she couldn't cash in. No wonder she pressed the retirement button, her ship has sailed mentally more than anything.

Jarrison Lawson and Ajee Wilson got away with it, so it wasn’t unreasonable for Hooligan to think that she would get away as well. You also shouldn’t forget that she (coincidentally) kept the receipt from the taco truck, which surprisingly wasn’t enough to prove her innocence ...

If you dope on purpose then of course you'll have some papers ready in case you get caught

The linesman should have raised the flag immediately (the offside was clearly visible), it just killed the momentum for the Hungarians. Nevertheless, that last goal was just pathetic effort from their defense.

That's not the rule anymore. Now ARs have to WAIT until the play is over and then raise the flag. The rule was tweaked to prevent situations when a player was actually onside and the quick AR call was wrong. The rule was tweaked back in 2013 already (before the 2014 World Cup) but some fans still call it by the old version. I see this happen even in Polish league when commentators sometimes wonder "why the AR raised the flag so late?". Because that's the new rule! :p

The previous rule tweak was in 2005 when AR was allowed to keep the flag down when a player offside wasn't making any play at the ball.
