Two major changes!

CEV unveils new format for Champions League

Luxembourg, March 30, 2016. The 2017 edition of Europe’s elite competition, the CEV Volleyball Champions League, will coincide with yet another milestone in European Volleyball history. The CEV Board of Administration agreed earlier this month upon a revised competition format which opens participation to each national champion and as a result the 2017 edition will be spreading a real Volleyball fever across the whole of Europe.

It was decided to revise the format of the CEV Volleyball Champions League and the participation criteria some 16 years after Europe’s elite competition was first introduced following in the footsteps of the CEV Champions Cup.

The format

The 2017 CEV Volleyball Champions League is split down as follows:

-    A 1st, 2nd and 3rd Round open to all National Federations and consisting of home and away matches; the number of teams competing at this stage will depend on the eventual registrations; teams losing in these rounds will be moved to the draw of the 2017 CEV Volleyball Cup, but other than this there is no further interconnection among the three European Cups. Should more than eight losers be required to move, an additional round will be played in the CEV Volleyball Cup. Within a specific round ‘byes’ will be awarded to the higher-ranked teams but after this it will be an open draw to determine the various ties
-    A 4th Round including 12 seeded teams per gender plus eight and four qualifying through the previous rounds in the men’s and women’s competition, respectively; at this stage of the competition, teams will be divided into pools of four each to play a double round robin
-    A Playoff Phase including Playoffs 12 and Playoffs 6 for the men and Playoffs 6 only for the women, to be contested as home and away matches that will determine the teams joining the organisers of the Final Four tournaments
-    The format of the Final Four remains unchanged, with the only exception being the possibility for two teams from the same country to be able to contest the gold medal match (i.e. they won’t have to cross their ways in the semis as up to now)

The composition

The 12 teams per gender seeded directly in the 4th Round are determined as per the latest European Cups’ Ranking List (which is available right here and considers results from the 2012, 2013 and 2014 seasons) according to the following clauses:

-    Two teams for the National Federations ranked 1 to 4
-    One team for the National Federations ranked 5 to 8

All ranked 9 and above National Federations are entitled to register their 2016 national champion as long as they fulfil all set requirements.

And:

EuroVolley to feature 24 teams from 2019

Luxembourg, April 1, 2016. Only a couple of days after unveiling the revised format of its elite club competition, the CEV Volleyball Champions League, there is additional ‘hot’ news for all fans of the sport, this time dealing with the flagship competition for national teams, i.e. the biennial CEV Volleyball European Championships.

Following an extensive review of the competition and after closely liaising with a number of stakeholders, a decision has been made to increase the number of teams participating in the Final Round to 24 and the number of organisers up to a maximum of four. Both these decisions were made in an effort to maximise the competition’s exposure across the whole of Europe.

This increase will allow eight additional National Federations for each edition to experience and utilise the stage which the EuroVolley Final Round presents to further promote Volleyball in their countries.

This provision will enter into force starting with the 2019 edition of Europe’s flagship competition for national teams. The CEV Board of Administration have now asked the European Sports Organising Commission (ESOC) to produce a complete technical concept, which will be analysed and eventually endorsed at the Board of Administration meeting scheduled for June 10-11 in Rome, Italy.

Following the eventual approval of this concept in June, the CEV will open the candidature process where National Federations are expected to join forces in order to apply for the right to host this high-profile competition in 2019 and beyond.

The CEV will be closely working with the eventual organisers and support them in the delivery of the ultimate Volleyball show in Europe.

Some great changes are coming :)

    • I have reported this again and they said it should be fixed now, please let me know if you are still facing issues.
    • more countries added to the list of US ban    you can't travel to USA if you are from : burkina faso , niger , Laos , South sudan , mali , sierra leon ...
    • Yes, but what I mean for Serbia is that everything changed there (unfortunately for us ). 2022 was an unbelievable mess, that's not the case anymore now with just one athlete who has really gone for it and made it, so I'm 99% sure they'll accept it this time.   Who knows though. Plus there's always 1-2 bigger countries here or there who reject something, but it's not gonna be 16 places I'm afraid
    • Doping by Event Type When we look at which events have the most doping cases, a few categories stand out from recent sanction records: Long Distance (3,000m and above): 32% of cases Sprints (400m or less): 24% of cases Jumps: 12% of cases Javelin: 8% of cases Middle Distance (800m–1,500m): 8% of cases Hammer: 8% of cases Steeplechase (3,000m SC): 4% of cases
    • From 2020 to 2025    These three countries alone make up almost two-thirds (61.9%) of all current doping violations in athletics worldwide. It’s worth noting that 199 of World Athletics’ 214 member federations have no athletes on the current ban list. This means the problem is really concentrated in a small number of places. Here’s a look at the top countries: Rank Country Total Violations Percentage Region 1 Kenya 119 24.74% Africa 2 India 108 22.45% Asia 3 Russia 73 15.18% Europe 4 China 26 5.40% Asia 5 Turkey 20 4.16% Europe 6 Italy 18 3.74% Europe 7 South Africa 18 3.74% Africa 8 Ukraine 17 3.53% Europe 9 United States 16 3.33% North America 10 Morocco 15 3.12% Africa
