Tokyo Olympics – Sumit Nagal gets Olympics Entry: World No. 144 Sumit Nagal has made it to the singles draw of the Tokyo Olympics at a very last minute. None of the Indian singles player had qualified directly for the Olympics – but Nagal got lucky on two accounts.

  • 1st – India has got a entry into Olympics after various withdrawals by the top players.
  • 2nd – If not injured Yuki Bhambri would have got a entry for the Olympica via his protected ranking of 127 on ATP Charts – but as Bhambri is injured Nagal will represent India at the Olympics despite being ranked at 144th on ATP Charts.

After getting his singles entry confirmed, in all likelihood Nagal is all set to get spot in the mixed doubles draw as well. According to the information available, the All India Tennis Association is now trying for a mixed-double and Men's Double.

It would be even better. With Sania Mirza he can do wonders.

Not possible for Sumit Nagal- Sania Mirza in mixed doubles. They are way behind in rankings. AITA trying for Men's doubles qualifications by pairing in Sumit Nagal with Rohan Bopanna(As ITA giving preference to singles rankings in qualifications). And there in turn Rohan Bopanna pairing in with Sania Mirza in mixed doubles(Probably India's best shot at medals in Tennis).

Indian  at the Tokyo Olympics ……..7 days to Olympics ……….post 4 of 10 by nitin sanker

Today we look at *Boxing*

One of the great spectacle sports of the Olympics which has given us giants like mohammed ali , Joe Frazier , George foreman , the greatest amateur boxer teofilo Stevenson and others . This sport is often marred by corruption  and an opaque scoring system  but remains one of the great Olympic sports.

India has had a good boxing history with Indian boxers taking part at the Olympics since 1948 when we sent a 7 member squad. we have had some really good boxers , starting with *Ron  Norris*  who reached the quarterfinals of the Olympics in 1952 , the legendary Heavyweight *Hawa singh* the only Indian till now who has won two consecutive  asian golds  who also the co-founder of the bhiwani boxing club , the northeast champion *dingko singh* , the matinee idol good looking *vijender singh* and the magnificent *mary kom*.

While we came close to the medal podium several times with quarterfinal finishes , it was in 2008 that vijender got us a medal , followed by Mary Kom winning bronze in 2012. The banning of the Indian boxing federation from 2012 – 2016 dampened spirits but the Boxing federation was reconsitituted approved and has done a good job and we have a sharp uptick in our boxing performance.

So what our chances . we have 9 boxers participating in 2021, the biggest team ever , of these 6 are genuine medal prospects . I will focus on these

*Flyweight Men*   - Amit Phangal is currently ranked world number 1 and a reigning world championship silver medallist  and is the reigning Asian games champion.  He has lovely footwork  and compensates by quick in  and out boxing . Definitely a “likely” medal

*Lightweight men* Manish kaushik is an elegant boxer always a pleasure to watch  , he is a current world championship, he is currently ranked 18th which is more based on weird ranking system but a definite *likely* to medal for me

*Welterweight*  Vikas Krishan Yadav will be taking part in his 3rd  Olympics,  Immensely talented a youth gold medallist in 2010 , followed by a world championship bronze Vikas has been a bit of a bad boy of Indian boxing often missing camps and sometimes reaching big events not in great physical shape , he currently looks very focused and after a brief stint in pro boxing seems to want to  redeem his early promise , always a *likely*  for me

*Flyweight women* : Mary Kom  , the diminutive  Manipur is a legend in Boxing and India , a Padma Vidhushan awardee she is the rare  Indian G.O.A.T ( greatest of all time ) in an Olympic sport by winning  6 world championship gold medals , the highest by any women boxer. Her favored pinweight has never been part of the Olympic program and she is forced to box in the Flyweight. She is looking to cap her great legacy with another Olympic medal . The best boxing brains in the business , she will be surely a *likely*

*Lightweight women* Simaranjit Kaur is seeded 4th  and a 2018 bronze at the world championship underlines her class. She is yet another “likely”

*welterweight women* - Lovlina is another lady from the northeast , she is twice world bronze medallist and surely surely a *likely* medallist

*Medal  prediction * Three , with a range of 2-4 will be my best bet , but with only Simranjit and Amit seeded in the top 4 , the luck of the draw will play an important part in boxing

strength does not come from physical capacity but from an indomitable will. - Gandhi

Bopanna pairing with Sania will be great news for India....last time they narrowly missed medal !!!

they had decent matches at this year wimbledon

What are the chances? When we get final word on this? The Olympics are less than a week away. There is quarantine too.

In men's doubles tennis, there are 31 entries in the list. Ideally there should be one more. Let's hope it is Nagal/Bopanna
