WRG17 Roller Derby: USA and Spain dominate during the first day of competition

The first day of Roller Derby competition at the 2017 World Roller Games came to a close after two exciting games at the Youth Olympics Sport Park in Nanjing, China.

The National Teams of Australia and the United States faced during the opening game and their performance did not disappoint. Australia fought every minute of the game and displayed great teamwork, but unfortunately it was not enough to defeat their opponents. Team USA was strong from the first minute and quickly accumulated points, combining strong defensive work with efficient and speedy offense. The final score of the game, 228 to 5 for the Americans, does not give enough credit to the hard work of the Aussies, but does show that the USA is a force to be reckoned with and a favorite to claim the first Roller Games gold medal.

During the second game, the National Teams of Japan and Spain took the track to established the second winner of the day.

The game started with both teams fighting for position at the front, implementing smart strategies and excellent team work. During the first part of the game, the score remained close and Japan continued to engage in heavy blocking in the pack, which included many falls. The demanding physical conditions that Spain imposed, especially within the pack, were too much for the Japanese players. Eventually the Spaniards controlled the game and showed their dominance both physical and strategical, beating Japan 231 to 16.

The tournament continues tomorrow with four games as Australia takes on Japan at 8am and the USA faces Spain at 10am.
Later on we will have Spain back on the track facing Australia at 2pm and finishing the day with Team USA playing against Japan at 4pm.

    • I hope she can do well, but I think she's not going to win any gold, as she's never been comfortable both with the shooting range and the altitude in Anterselva   I fear biathlon is going to be one of the biggest flops for us next year (the other disaster will come from the sliding sports, I'm pretty sure...rather, hopeless)   I think our medal table will heavily depend on the speedskating sports, on the big air events and on alpine snowboard, any other discipline's contribution is going to be marginal
    • Great to see luge being back underway, but annoying that the graphics aren't really working properly yet     They're showing the time gaps at all the splits, as per usual, but then at the finish there is only the actual time, and no time gaps, resulting in all the time having to mentally calculate the difference to see if someone gained or lost time in the last part.

    • Yeah, that is quite a surprise overall. Our women's handball has regressed since the 2010s. Or maybe Spanish women's handball isn't as good as I thought.

    • Watched the mass start on Sunday & it just didn't work.  Runners starting from the fourth or fifth row back (ie everyone in places 20-70) were losing time through no fault of their own - just not enough room on the piste for 70+ starters.  So OK for an experiment, but not for real meaningful competition.
    • Tournament to crown the inaugural Women's United States Champion:   SmackDown - November 15th Bayley def. B-Fab and Candice LeRae   SmackDown - November 22nd Chelsea Green def. Blair Davenport and Bianca Belair   SmackDown - November 29th Michin def. Piper Niven and Lash Legend   Still to come: SmackDown - December 6th Naomi vs. Tiffany Stratton vs. Elektra Lopez   SmackDown - December 13th Semi-Finals: Bayley vs. Chelsea Green   Michin vs. TBA   The Final Match of the tournament will take place on "Saturday Night's Main Event" PLE (Premium Live Event) on December 14th.
    • Yeah that mirror thing was so weird. You literally need a maximum of two safety car laps (possibly just 1) to take away that 1 piece of stuff....but wait until someone unavoidably shatters it into 1000 little pieces     Intentionally or not, there is no way it was NOT going to happen at some point...
