Wow Europe! Arguably the team everyone thought would be the worst in the tournament, makes it to the final! A very strong part of me wants them to do the unthinkable and beat Canada!

Tatar's second stuns Sweden

Team Europe eliminates Tre Kronor in OT, 3-2, off to finals

Air Canada Centre Toronto ON Canada

Sweden and Team Europe were tied 1-1 after two periods of a tense game to determine who would play Canada in the finals.

Tomas Tatar's second goal of the game, at 3:43 of overtime, gave Team Europe an incredible 3-2 win over Sweden to advance to the World Cup finals.

The winning goal started with goalie Henrik Lundqvist throwing the puck around the boards where Mats Zuccarello cut it off and fired it towards the goal. Tatar controlled the puck with his skate and got off a quick shot before Lundqvist could recover.

Sweden has yet to make another Canada Cup/World Cup finals since 1984.

The first period passed almost without incident. Shots were 10-5 for the Swedes, but neither goalie had to make a great save. Team Europe went 20minutes without recording even one hit, perhaps a first in top-level hockey since that stat has been recorded.

But play opened just a bit in the middle period. Tre Kronor got things going at 2:31 on a nice all-around play by Nicklas Backstrom. First, he won a faceoff in the Europe end and got the puck back to Anton Stralman at the point.

Stralman beat his man inside the blue line and moved down the boards, firing a quick snap shot on goal. Halak made the save but kicked the puck out to Backstrom who knocked it in for the 1-0 lead.

But Team Europe, with all its international experience, was unfazed. Indeed, the team seemed to play more aggressively after that goal, coming close twice on a Sweden power play. Lundqvist denied Marian Hossa and Tobias Reider in quick succession.

Late in the period, Team Europe managed the equalizer. Christian Ehrhoff skated behind the Sweden goal, but on the way he passed the puck in front to Marian Gaborik.

Gaborik was surrounded by three Swedes and managed to get his stick on the pass only weakly, but the shot had enough momentum to squeeze between Lundqvist’s pads and over the goal line.

Europe stunned the Swedes again by going ahead only 12 seconds into the third period. Right off the face-off Andrej Sekera spotted Tomas Tatar who fired a long shot that Lundqvist fumbled. Tatar roared in to collect his own rebound and beat the goalie before he was set.

The Europeans then settled in and played a sound period, one in which they might have gone up two goals but for a nice save by Lundqvist on a Thomas Vanek breakaway.

Just when it looked like the Euros were headed to the finals, though, Erik Karlsson's quick point shot was tipped in front and beat Halak with only 4:32 to tie the game, 2-2. That set the stage for NHL-style unlimited overtime.

Yeah, the biggest challenge for Team Europe was whether they could play together in a short time. On paper the team is pretty good. On a good day Slovakia can defeat anyone while Switzerland, Germany and Denmark have solid players, though lack depth when it comes to international play (not a problem here obviously). Add a sprinkle of other nation's top players and you could have something special.

Congrats to Team Europe, but you'll need something extra special to defeat Canada (aka 2010 Halak) ;)

well, no one expected this team to win a single game, and they are in final...you know hockey is amazing game everything can happen in a seconds,,but Canada is ofc Canada and here no doubts about who is going for the cup..impossible to defeat the maple leafs in Toronto 2 times even with Halák 2010 :d

    • But it seems to us that Norway wasn't as strong in Lillehammer 1994 as it was later? And not just in women's events. Generally, until 2000, Norway was much weaker in women's biathlon and women`s cross-country skiing. I remember in the 1990s, Italy's biggest rivals, Belmondo and di Centa, were Russia, when Norway somewhere further back and only in the classic style. Bente Martinsen- Skari, this is their first really strong girl in cross country, just about 2000, just like Liv Grete Skielbreid- Pioree in women`s biathlon at similar times.   Do you think, that is there any hope that thanks to the popularity of Haaland and football in general in Norway in recent years, winter sports such as biathlon or cross-country skiing will lose a little bit, becouse that?

    • This suggestion  @Dnl  made some months ago has also been implemented.   In each club, I have added a "Milano Cortina 2026 Qualification Tracker" record which takes the content from the Qualification by Nation tracker of that NOC.   People who see it can not edit the content, but it will be automatically updated once @Matej will update the record, and if you notice any mistake feel free to report it to Matej or in the record itself.   Club's admins can now edit the name of the section into their own language or change the spelling, I have used "Milano Cortina 2026 Qualification Tracker" for all the clubs. To do so, go inside the section, then click on "Manage Club"-"Edit this database Record" and change the name of the section:     By the way, if you are not a club's admin but you would like to edit things inside the club just let me know and I will give you the rights to do so. There can be more "admins" inside the club with the rights to edit and organize the sections, and that's not a role that require time or commitment.   Let's try to make all the clubs active during MiCo and when the LA28 qualifications will start!
