Archery

2018 Archery World Cup - Stage 2 (Antalya)

Men's Recurve

Qualification Round

Brady, Jack, and Matthew Requa all improved their qualification scores from Shanghai! This was 19 year old Matthew Nofel first ever Archery World Cup and placing 79th in qualification is great!

Bracket Round - Brady Ellison

Brady Ellison was able to get a first round & second round bye as he ranked 4th after the qualification round. In the third round he was up against Sanzhar Mussayev (29) and ended up loosing 6-5. This was a pretty big upset as Brady should be making it to the semi-finals or finals in the World Cup.

Bracket Round - Jack Williams

Jack Williams was up against Polish Archer Slawomir Naploszek (75) and ended up winning that match. Next Jack played against Xu Tianyu (27) and won the second round match up aswell! In the third round Crispin Duenas (6) was up against Jack and ended up beating Jack 7-3. Making it to the 3rd round is an improvement for Jack as he went out of Shanghai in the second round.

Men's Recurve Team

We ended up ranked 8th after the qualification round like in Shanghai, which let us get a 1st round bye in the bracket stage. After our Bye round we got matched up against Chinese Taipei (9) losing to them 6-2. Sadly we exited the tournament in the second round which is worse than Shanghai in which there we made it to the Quarterfinal.

:USA  Week in Summer #9 - United States  :USA

June 3rd - June 24th

NOTE: FINALLY in summertime now for this year so I have more time to work on this and my spreadsheet which I'm completely redesigning to make it easier for me to understand. Both Cycling and Badminton are a bit hard because there are so many small competitions and competitors that I'm probably just gonna end up sticking with the best in each category.

Archery

2018 Archery World Cup - Stage 3 (Salt Lake City)

Men's Recurve

Qualification Round

Qualification.png.706b8b22c2c140903c321d83fd0aa131.png

A pretty amazing qualification round for the USA men, as expected Brady Ellison got into the top 3. Jack Williams had an amazing improvement since Stage 2 (Antalya) where he go ranked 38. Mathew Requa also had a good qualification after ranking 58 in Antalya aswell.

Brady Ellison

5b30090478715_BradyEllison.png.cf3b27b3a8d09419e6a890cb2e13006f.png5b30090b62940_BradyEllison2.png.adcc6aa31a3b7df52ea66844960210dc.png

Brady Ellison got a first and second round bye as he ranked 3rd after qualification. He then was matched against Wei Shaoxuan (35) from China and beat him 6-4. In the 4th round Brady lost to Steve Wijler (19) of the Netherlands. Again Brady has not been able to make it to the finals in a while.

Jack Williams

5b3009beca2e9_JackWilliams.png.d993b99e39da29ac5f27776f2633fccc.png5b3009c666a52_JackWilliams2.png.5e54bf032f32b1ab2015918f6941ee1a.png

After ranking 9th after qualification Jack was able to get a first round bye! In the second round he was matched up against Andres Aguilar (57) and beat him 6-0. Third round Jack faced off against Crispin Duenas (24) and also beat him 6-0. In the fourth round Jack upset Li Jialun (8) from China winning 7-3. In the Quarterfinals Jack lost against Ryan Tyack (16) 1-7. Overall a great result from Jack Williams bumping up his world ranking!

Matthew Requa

5b300aa68420e_MatthewRequa.png.8660c72cdbf49ff135f015cf367c0d5d.png5b300ab153e54_MatthewRequa1.png.be19452b092a87ecd4059633879e83e3.png

After a first round bye Matthew beat Lucas Daniel (42) from France 7-3 and moved onto the third round where he beat Rick Van Den Oever (55) 6-0. In the fourth round Matthew lost against Thomas Chirault (7) 3-7.

Thomas Stanwood

5b300b2c17357_ThomasStanwood.png.4c3efd177971451ea59e30e739f554e2.png

Thomas got a first round bye but ended up loosing to Jeff Henckels (33) 3-7 in the second round.

Women's Recurve

Qualification Round

Qualification.png.b0900a882f8b980923e35430dd2550e9.png

GREAT qualification for the women! All the women seem to be back on form after a bad performance in Antalya.

Mackenzie Brown

5b300c093fe31_MackenzieBrown.png.137be780d89462be67951d951ede6266.png

Mackenzie Brown got a first round bye and in the second round beat Mariana Avita (28) from Mexico 6-0. Sadly Mackenzie lost 5-6 in the third round against Ana Maria Rendon (21).

Khatuna Lorig

5b300c66cd814_KhatunaLorig.png.1aa63c00d7193abd8df66077e1fcd07d.png

Again Khatuna Lorig found it difficult to make it far in the bracket stage after loosing second round to Hayakawa Ren (20) of Japan 4-6.

Erin Mickelberry & La Nola Shepherd

5b300cb695f59_ErinandLaNola.png.b63d07dc3d812a61f6c1d67d5eb77129.png

Well would you look at that! Erin and La Nola got placed against eachother in the first round! Erin Mickelberry ended up winning but only to fall to Deepika Kumari (4) of India 2-6.

Men's Recurve Team

5b300d4220435_MenTeamQualification.png.a3afd532bd606d284e0320d8d6d1c807.png

A 2nd place after qualification for the Men's Recurve Team is pretty great!

5b300d75882fa_RecurveTeam.png.f2d73bb33f70c5e384f4dd4d7dae6e45.png

Well the hype didn't last very long... after a first round win against Saudi Arabia (15) 6-2. We fell to Italy (7) 4-5.

Women's Recurve Team

5b300dda5af28_TeamQualification.png.30089546718b64ec99d500b7f181fa42.png

A 5th place ranking after qualification is not the worst!

5b300e16b8ef5_TeamBracket.png.0c5e1a3341aa2742dd7eee04e011622c.png

We got a nice first round bye and quarter finals ended up beating China (4) 5-3! We moved onto the semi finals and lost to Chinese Taipei (1) 2-6.

Mixed Recurve Team

5b300e8567da4_SaltLakeCity.png.41eb7dc1a96e702d0a3c80b2759de6e1.png

Thanks for the update, I’d like to add that our Sport Climbers did very well at the World Cup in Vail. I don’t remember the results off the top of my head, but I believe both a US man and woman got a podium. The US shooters have also had a good World Cup season, with a few wins in shotgun events. The US woman preformed well in the French Open, with both Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys making the quarterfinals. Stephens went on to take 2nd. The US also had a few paddlers reach the semi-finals at this weeks ICF Slalom World Cup 1. The US did not do great at the Pan American Handball Championships.

When you end the 1st quarter 10 - 31 you should be pretty worried. Our previous match against Mexico we beat them 91 - 55 so I'm shocked that we lost to them. Mexican player Francisco Cruz had an amazing game scoring 24 points! Meanwhile our best scorer was Marcus Thornton with only 14 points... Sad part is in an interview with our head coach Jeff Van Gundy he said "If we think we can go to Cuba or Mexico and do the same thing, fall behind early and hope for a late rally, we're making a huge mistake" well thats exactly what the team did. Thankfully we were already qualified for the Second Round.

Thank goodness we won this game and didn't get beat like we did against Mexico on Thursday. At the end of the first quarter we were down 28-24, but in the second and third quarter we score a bunch of points 26-9 in the second and 24-9 in the third. We had quite an even spread of points between our players with two players getting 16 points and six players getting 10 points. This win and game finalizes our group C games and now we head to the second round.

In the Semifinals we beat China 3-1 and in the final beat Turkey 3-2! Which means we are the first time winner of the FIVB Volleyball Women's Nations League inaugural season which is amazing!

    • I read now that Valentina Rodini will be in the new team of Tizzano + Galtarossa and Martini. I was probably in such an information bubble on Instagram that I thought that only Abbagnale was running a campaign and had a team of people around him. That's why I was surprised by his defeat + the fact that, for example, Rodini supports his rival. But as I wrote, for me the change in the general coach position is a plus. We need a new opening and a new impulse: Cattaneo had his best results in Tokyo and then he only explained that his rowers were running away abroad to the USA to study and that's why he had worse results. Ok, except that it's the same in Romania and Greece but they results are comparable or better. It's obvious that no one here will make the UK or the Netherlands, because we don't have such resources and money but I think we can repeat the Romanian results (2 gold - 3 silver in Paris) and that will be a much better result than the 2 silver in this year.
    • Abbagnale boasted that he had 80 per cent a few days before the vote (I still have the screen) and ran again as a result of a power deal. Not a great loss.   I have doubts about the new technical director though, you can't announce him during the congress, brandishing the scalp of the Abbagnale era technical staff (who then, were Crispi's men). Let's hope there are no rifts between the new staff and the athletes, it had to be handled better.
    • I was surprised by Abbagnale's defeat. I thought he was a sure of victory, since he decided to run - I read some source that he didn't know if he would start before Paris 2024. What do you think about it?

    • Cattaneo was good but his peak was in Tokyo 2021. Then there was such stabilization - stagnation. In Paris the result was in line with expectations but without the wow effect. They threw everything that was best into the quadruple sculls and it was enough for a only silver. Now without the lightweight sculls in LA I think that radical changes are needed to remain competitive. Previously there was a 3-year Olympic cycle due to Covid, so big changes weren`t good but now I think the time is right. Although of course more funds are needed for this sport in Italy, because even the best coach will not overcome this vel our men`s alpine skiing sector
    • @Gianlu33 we posted the same (great) news at the same time
    • Davide Tizzano (1996 Olympic Champion, men's double sculls) is the new President of the Italian Federation, as he defeated the (now former) President Giuseppe Abbagnale by a very small margin (52% to 48%) in last week's federal elections   and he's already at work to make up for the last 8 disappointing years (at least in terms of Olympic success): his first move is bringing back home  Antonio Colamonaci  who made  great in the past 8 years   https://www.oasport.it/2024/11/canottaggio-cambia-la-direzione-tecnica-dellitalia-arriva-il-guru-che-ha-reso-grande-la-romania/   let's see if he can make  great again, now
