Team USA - Fencing

Recommended Posts

We've had success thus far this Fencing season.  Our weaknesses are M Épée and W Sabre.  But we've medaled in just about every other event (team and individual).

Some top dogs that have medaled thus far:

Colin Heathcock - M Sabre

Lee Kiefer - W Foil

Lauren Scruggs - W Foil

Alexander Massialas - M Foil

Hadley Husisian - W Épée

Regarding qualification...

We get 6 total places, and we can have 18 total (9 per gender).

Teams are determined solely by ranking (1-4, plus highest from each continent, with Asia/Oceania being in the same zone), based on performance 1 April 2027-1 April 2028.  We qualified a team in each event except Men's Épée.  Venezuela took the Americas team quota in Paris.  We'll see how this go round goes.

If for some reason we don't field a team in an event, we can send one individual in the event, based on rankings + performance in the Americas zonal qualifiers in April 2028.

But, one thing I see with Fencing is that we get 6 total slots to use however we want in addition to whatever we earn.  Given that we sent 15 to Paris, I think that mean's we'll have a full team this time. :)

Fencing in Lima this weekend.

Foil is strong for M and W.  We have 2 M ranked in the top 20 that we sent to Lima (Nick Itkin is 4, Gerek Meinhardt is 16).  We also have 3 W in top 20 (already mentioned Lee Kiefer, who is 1 and married to Gerek, and Lauren Scruggs, who is 13...Jaelyn Liu is 2).

Best of luck to our team! :USA

Jaelyn Liu - Yet another Women's Foil athlete to pay attention to.

She's 17, and thus is still eligible to compete in the Cadet (U17) category, as well as Junior (U20) categories.

They just had the Cadet + Junior WCh in :BRA, where she won both.

For the second year in a row.

She also won Cadet in 2024, and has a Junior Team Gold in 2025.

At the Senior level, she has a Gold in Team and Bronze in Individual from the 2025 PanAms, and she was part of the Team at the 2025 World Championships, where we also won Gold.

She has been going to the Senior World Cups, but hasn't medalled this year.  She did snag a gold during the previous season.

A rising star with many years ahead!

  • 2 weeks later...

Took home a few bronze medals in Foil in :EGY this weekend...Nick Itkin with the individual, and both teams won bronze.  :)  No luck in Sabre or Epee in their World Cups elsewhere.

    • Looks like i severely overestimated the intelligence of the average Bulgarian.. Tragic result, but will see what happens now. Initial stance last night was that there won't be any EU blockage, but we will be "standing our ground on Bulgaria's interests", whatever that means. The campaign and the whole election cycle was more towards our domestic problems, corruption and status quo. There wasn't much foreign rhetoric, even though everyone knows Radev's position.   It's basically wait and see at this point. Like i mentioned before, this guy isn't as bombastic as Orban, but more tactical and cunning, so i don't expect fireworks in front of whole Europe.

    • To give some insight into how ridiculous Angharad's time was, the mixed relay that includes her, the infamous female breaststroker, is one second quicker than the four that includes Adam ****ing Peaty.   It's VERY rare your quickest mixed 4 includes your female breaststroker - the slowest stroke also creates, generally the biggest 'sex' gap. But if your male stroker is relatively very weak (think USA Tokyo 2020) it can be explained.   When your male stroker is Adam Peaty, backed up by Filip Nowacki, its insane.
    • Doesn't seem to be major changes.   Section 3.B has been updated in relation to the host nation quota to introduce 'eligible' into the criteria. In the new version, 'if the host country has not already qualified an athlete, the highest-placed host country eligible athlete based on the final results of the Olympic Games 2028 Qualification Event will directly obtain a quota place. If the host country has already had one or two athletes qualify via alternate pathways, the host country quota position will not be granted and will be reallocated.'   There is also a change to section F1 and F2 to introduce gender criteria - 'If an allocated quota place is not confirmed by the NOC by the confirmation of quota places deadline, or is declined by the NOC, the quota place will be reallocated to the next highest placed eligible athlete not yet qualified of the same gender from the same qualification event where the quota place was allocated , adhering to the maximum number of quota places per NOC, as outlined above (B.2).'
    • Massidda is another disappointment and Imperio- it's great that she has gold, but she's not making any progress in her results and with this result, she won't even qualify for the Olympics in 2028 (in 2024 also her failed to qualify). Considering the return of our old friends from Eastern Europe, Italy can basically give up on the sport- our chances of an Olympic medal are practically zero, at now.
