Speed Skating ISU Allround & Sprint World Championships 2020

About 15 minutes to go. :cheer:

Just for fun, I'll make a prediction for the women's sprint tournament, because in my eyes that's the most difficult one to predict this weekend:

  • Bowe performed poorly in Salt Lake City and Calgary, but perhaps this sea-level track helps her getting back to her high level.
  • Ter Mors is a big question mark for me as she hasn't skated many competitions in the past two years after she had an injury during the 2018-2019 season and this season she was suffering from illness a lot.
  • Leerdam won the 1.000m world title two weeks ago, but she hasn't competed in a 500m since her win at the national championships. Furthermore, I'm not sure if that win was a fluke as the main favorites showed disappointing times there and she outdid herself.
  • Takagi wasn't impressive on the 1.000 in Salt Lake City, the distance on which I think on average she's the best in the world. That's why I put her a little lower than what she's capable of when she's in shape.
  • Herzog is good on the 500m, but hasn't shown much on the 1.000m throughout the season.
  • The Koreans went with a weird choice when you have Kim Min-Sun and Kim Hyun-Yung as well who are better than Kim Min-Ji in both distances.

After the first 500m:

I really overestimated the speed of the track. I'd expected a winning time around 37,25 like the World Cup last year. On average, skaters were about 0,30 slower than I predicted.

After the first 500m, I'd say these are the winners and losers among the favorites and outsiders.

  • Winners: :JPN Miho Takagi
  • Losers: :RUS Daria Kachanova, :USA Brittany Bowe, :RUS Angelina Golikova (almost fell), :NED Jutta Leerdam and :NED Letitia de Jong

Overall :BLR Hanna Nifantava did the poorest compared to what I predicted, whereas :CHN Li Qishi did the best as she's more of a 1.000m specialist.

This will be an exciting battle between :JPN Kodaira, :JPN Takagi and :RUS Fatkulina now.

Close first 500m in the men's sprint tournament. :CAN Dubreuil wins the race and won bronze on the 1.000m at the World Distance Championships two weeks ago, so he might challenge the Russians here. Pretty much all 1.000m specialists apart from :RUS Kulizhnikov and :CAN Dubreuil showed disappointing times.

After the first 1.000m:

  • Top contenders/outsiders:
    • On average, most times on this first 1.000m were around what I expected, but there were some great outliers on both sides:
    • Out of the favorites and outsiders, :JPN Arisa Go, :NED Jorien ter Mors and :JPN Miho Takagi had the best 1.000m.
    • :RUS Daria Kachanova, :AUT Vanessa Herzog and :JPN Nao Kodaira were the biggest disappointments on this first 1.000m.
  • Outside of the top contenders:
    • :KOR Kim Min-Ji did a lot better than I expected closing the gap to the rest, but I still think she'll finish last, :NOR Hege Bøkko and :CHN Zhao Xin/Li Qishi did well to.
    • :BLR Hanna Nifantava didn't do well and neither did the two Polish ladies.

Thoughts after Day 1:

  • Top contenders/outsiders:
    • :JPN Miho Takagi will win the world title by a landslide if nothing unusual happens tomorrow. Not what I expected after her results in Salt Lake City.
    • :RUS Olga Fatkulina and :JPN Nao Kodaira will fight for silver and bronze.
    • The skaters who did the best overall compared to the rest of their season: :JPN Miho Takagi, :JPN Arisa Go and :NED Jorien ter Mors.
    • Biggest disappointments for me are :RUS Daria Kachanova, :USA Brittany Bowe and :RUS Angelina Golikova.
  • Outside of the favorites/outsiders:
    • Top 3 performers for me today were 1. :CHN Li Qishi, 2. :KOR Kim Min-Ji and 3. :NOR Hege Bøkko.
    • Disappointments were 1. :POL Andżelika Wójcik, 2. :BLR Hanna Nifantava and 3. :GER Katja Franzen, all having shown much better results during this season.

After the second 500m:

  • Top contenders/outsiders:
    • Best results for: 1. :JPN Miho Takagi, 2. :JPN Nao Kodaira and 3. :CAN Kaylin Irvine
    • Worst results for: 1. :AUT Vanessa Herzog, 2. :RUS Daria Kachanova, 3. :USA Brittany Bowe
  • Other skaters:
    • Best results for: 1. :NOR Hege Bøkko, 2. :CHN Li Qishi, 3. :CHN Zhao Xin
    • Worst results: 1. :POL Andżelika Wójcik, 2. :BLR Hanna Nifantava, 3. :BEL Stien Vanhoutte

Overall:

  • Expected podium is now :JPN Miho Takagi, 2. :JPN Nao Kodaira and 3. :RUS Olga Fatkulina. Miho will be the only one who will finish below 150 points (even below 149 points).
  • Biggest disappointments this tournament: 1. :RUS Daria Kachanova, 2. :USA Brittany Bowe, 3. :AUT Vanessa Herzog. Kachanova has retired after this 500m.
  • :POL Andżelika Wójcik now most likely to finish last, even though I expected her to finish more than 5 points in front of :KOR Kim Min-Ji.

Karolina Bosiek with an excellent start to her tournament. Interestingly, she is born on 20-02-2000, meaning she turned 20 on 20-02-2020 :d

    • Nice for them, but also kind of too bad they pick the exact same two as last time. Would have been nice to see Regina Martinez for example (although I'm not sure that would have been logistically possible, depending on how they're going to do the flag bearer thing in the first place).

    • One of my favorite songs from the early 2000s that I listened to on a cassette on my walkman
    • For me 20 medals will be good. And if more there are? Super. However, I prefer not to get my hopes up too much, so as not to be disappointed later.
    • If you're still taking suggestions, I tought the following:   Team Madison format.   17 teams of 2 "riders", randomly drawn. Teams can be named for famous "endurance" track cyclists. 4 intermediate "sprints", one after a voting block, in which the top 8 teams will score according to this formula: (10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 & 1). The order in which team score for a sprint are determined by the total number of "medals" won by both members of the team during the block. Ranking will be sorted according to the number of gold medals, then silver, then bronze. If there's two or more teams with same number of points, the medals of best individual performer of each team will be considered to break the tie. If the tie remains, then team's total points during the block will be used to break it. If the team fails to receive a single medal during each block, it will be considered to "lose lap" and 20 points will be substracted from their score. If the team fails to score at least 1 point during each block, it will be an automatic DNF for the team. If both members of the team get a medal from a single jury, it will be considered to "gain lap" and 20 points will be added to their score. A team can only win an additional lap per voting block. After the 4 intermediate, a "final" sprint will be recorded, in which points will be doubled (20, 16, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4 & 2). Ranking for the final sprint will take into account the total medals won during the event.   What do you think?
    • I don't medal pick, per se... I assign probabilities/expected-values and total them up. So I don't have a gold medal estimate... but if you want one, divide those numbers by three and you'll be pretty close!   I imagine Norway, Italy and Netherlands and maybe Canada will probably skew a bit higher on golds, and US, Germany, and Sweden will skew a little lower... so maybe: Norway - 14 US - 11 Germany - 11 Italy - 11 Canada - 10 Austria - 8 Netherlands - 8 Japan - 7 Sweden - 6 France.- 6   I was surprised seeing Italy come in that high, I was figuring 22-23, but I guess they've been do well on the World Cups.
    • If you were to predict top- 10 for the number of gold medals, what would it look like?     For me, as an Italian, any result for Italy: +20 medals would be OK (if that will include 6-7 gold medals). The trauma of Turin 2006 is too great
    • Doesn't really help that two of the strongest countries in that particular sport are banned from the team event for well known reasons.
