CAS rejects Platini's appeal over FIFA ban

Today the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) rejected the Platini's bid to overturn a six-year ban from working in football, but cut his ban to four years and reduced fine (imposed by FIFA) from 80,000 Swiss francs (CHF) to 60,000 Swiss francs.

Platini confirmed he plans to resign as UEFA president after the decision of CAS but issued a statement to the media announcing that he will continue his battle to clear his name.

Quote

"I take note of today's decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport but I see it as a great injustice."

"This decision imposes on me a suspension the duration of which will de facto prevent me, and as if by chance, from standing in the next FIFA presidential electio."

"As agreed with the national associations, I resign from my role as president of UEFA in order to be able to continue my fight before the Swiss courts to prove my integrity in this case."

UEFA statement on Michel Platini's CAS decision

UEFA has taken note of the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport to suspend UEFA President Michel Platini from any football-related activity for four years.

We have also taken note of Michel Platini's statement announcing his intention to resign as UEFA President.

The UEFA Executive Committee will meet on the morning of 18 May in Basel to discuss next steps, including the scheduling of an elective congress.

In the meantime, there will be no UEFA President appointed ad interim.
