shocking news for Iran one day before the competition , AKF didn't let two time World Champion Amir Mehdizadeh to participate, saying he is banned for a year !! because of his protest after the Asian Games final where he clearly got robbed against the Indonesian guy. he attended the medal ceremony but removed the silver medal from his neck very quickly and left the podium early (still, after the Indonesian anthem but before the photography)

seriously 1 year ban for that ?!!! interestingly nobody knew that in Iran, as he participated in WKF events. if they knew at least they could send someone else, it's not like we don't have any other medal caliber Karateka.

OMG! :yikes::facepalm::wall:

frankly, WKF should take the status of OQR tournament away from this one and force AKF to act properly...

something like that it's absolutely unacceptable...

and then they cry because they've been axed from the future Olympic Games already before having their official debut...

if you allow things like that to happen...:hairpull::pope:

The Iranian officials claimed they tried until the last hours to solve the problem but the competition started today without him. it seems AKF officials in Jakarta told the Iranians that he is banned for a year. no letter, no email. and in time, the Iranian officials claimed they solved the problem and there will be no suspension for him, in past year we had change in Iran Karate federation, and the "new officials" had no idea about that. they even accepted his name, gave him ID card ! Iranians even tried to get WKF president into it and solve the problem with his help but no avail. since he changed his body weight from 60 and 67 and had some injuries, his results weren't any good last year and his chance was very slim to qualify through the ranking. but then I can't understand how the hell they can ban someone for a year for such protest !! that wasn't such a big deal

btw, do you know if this is the Asian Qualifier ? beside ranking points I mean for the best gold medalists to qualify. it should be, there is no other Asian competition. :dunno:

the document says "If Continental Games are not approved as a qualification event on a specific continent, then the highest ranked athlete not yet qualified from the Olympic Standing on 6 April 2020 from that specific continent, will obtain the quota place, respecting the maximum quota per NOC."

this is amazing we still don't know that !:wall:

as far as I know, the only Continental Events approved as Olympic Qualifier are the European Games and the Pan-American Games (at least, those are the only 2 named in the official qualification document on the WKF website)...

therefore, for Asia, Africa and Oceania the following statement should be considered:

"If Continental Games are not approved as a qualification event on a specific continent, then the highest ranked athlete not yet qualified from the Olympic Standing on 6 April 2020 from that specific continent, will obtain the quota place, respecting the maximum quota per NOC."

so, this event should give points for the OQR, but shouldn't be among those events giving up direct quota (which will be reallocated to the OQR, also to choose the best male and female for the Continental Quota)...

basically, it's quite a mess...they could (and should) definitely have made it a lot simpler, imho...

when they were writing that qualification rules, they didn't know there will be no "continental games" in Asia in 2019 ?! they could simply write that. is it even possible to count 2018 Asian Games for this ? :mumble: guess not. as you said it will most probably go to the OQR.

AKF uses a different program comparing to WKF, we have all the finalists for kumite events today, all finals and kata events will be held tomorrow. also only in Asia we have a 55kg competition for men !

here is the finalists

Men's

55kg: :KAZ Andrey Aktauov vs :KSA Abdullah Al-Harbi

60kg: :KGZ Rafael Akbarov vs :UZB Sadriddin Saymatov

67kg: :JPN Hiroto Shinohara vs :KAZ Didar Amirali

75kg: :KSA Abdulaziz Al-Hakami vs :JPN Ken Nishimura

84kg: :IRI Zabihollah Poursheib vs :JOR Mahmoud Sajan

+84kg: :KSA Tareg Hamedi vs :JPN Hideyoshi Kagawa

Women's

50kg: :JPN Miho Miyahara vs :UZB Bakhriniso Babaeva

55kg: :IRI Taravat Khaksar vs :UZB Sevinch Rakhimova

61kg: :CHN Yin Xiaoyan vs :IRI Rozita Alipour

68kg: :INA Ceyco Georgia Zefanya vs :UZB Nodira Djumaniyazova

+68kg: :KAZ Sofya Berultseva vs :IRI Hamideh Abbasali

---------------------------------------------

terrible terrible tournament for the men's team ! Ganjzadeh lost to that Saudi guy again ! Askari lost to Nishimura, the good news is they are almost safe in Olympic ranking. but this is extremely disappointing. this is the second time Sajjad is losing to this guy. Saudi Arabia has 3 in the final and we have just 1 !

on other hand great result for the women's team to have 3 in the final. specially Abbasali needs the gold medal to keep herself in top 4. interestingly all of  the Iranians here lost to eventual finalists, all of them will be alive for the bronze medal. (except 67kg where we had no competitor because of Mehdizadeh's suspension)

Gold medalists

75kg: :JPN Ken Nishimura

84kg: :IRI Zabihollah Poursheib

+84kg: :KSA Tareg Hamedi

Team Kata: :JPN Japan

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

with only team kumite events left for tomorrow, Japan has 6 gold medals. for Iran it's 3 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze. while this is not really a good result but in term of Olympic qualification I'm almost happy with them. Abbasali won the gold and she needed this more than anybody else. Khaksar also put herself in race for Olympic quota with gold medal here. even though I think at the end we have realistic chance for 3 direct quotas but right now the chance still exists for women's 55 and 61, it's funny the only weight we have absolutely no chance to qualify is men's 67kg !

both Ganjzadeh and Askari managed to win bronze. very bad result for high quality athletes like them but I think they are exhausted with too many competitions in a short period. i think it's time to rest at least for some Serie A events. they can afford not to participate in couple competitions

Iran won both kumite events, both of them had unbelievable comeback in their matches against Japan. men's team was down 2 defeats and 1 draw but they dominated the last two individual matches, and the women's team was down against Japan until the very last second where Taravat Khaksar scored the winning point.

here is the final medal table

:JPN Japan - 6 / 3 / 4

:IRI Iran - 5 / 2 / 4

:UZB Uzbekistan - 3 / 1 / 3

:KSA Saudi Arabia - 1 / 3 / 0

:KAZ Kazakhstan - 1 / 2 / 0

:CHN China - 1 / 0 / 3

:INA Indonesia - 0 / 2 / 1

:JOR Jordan - 0 / 1 / 2

:HKG Hong Kong - 0 / 1 / 1

:KGZ Kyrgyzstan - 0 / 1 / 1

:MAS Malaysia - 0 / 1 / 1

:KUW Kuwait - 0 / 0 / 5

:VIE Vietnam - 0 / 0 / 3

:TPE Chinese Taipei - 0 / 0 / 2

:MAC Macau - 0 / 0 / 1

:KOR South Korea - 0 / 0 / 1

:THA Thailand - 0 / 0 / 1

:UAE United Arab Emirates - 0 / 0 / 1
