Quite shocking info about Serbia.

Who was that medalist?

Milos Paunovic, on vault. You can check the results here.

Really shocking. As gymnastics expert, correct me if i am wrong, but level of competition in vault wasnt on the highest level? I see other Serbian in 4th position, Jordan won gold... :dunno:

On the other hand, i see Berki, Ude, Bertoncelj...

Yes, you are right, but I'd say the level was still quite decent. Some of the World Cup events are not exactly stellar, but they're all official FIG events, so it's prestigious to earn a medal. Countries like Singapore, with medals at the Commonwealth Games, have never won a medal at the World Cup series, so this is still a big achievement for Paunovic.

Yes, Serbia is so bad in gymnastics that every medal outside some Balkan championships is stellar achievement. Pitty that he didnt continue with decent results.

Actually, even in former Yugoslavia almost 100% of gymnasts at olympics were from Slovenia. Serbia just doesnt have any tradition in this beautiful sport.

Yes, it's all about Slovenia and Croatia. Slovenia was very unfairly treated by FIG, especially in 2007 when Pegan should have qualified to the Olympic Games, but the stupid rules didn't let him.

At the World Championships, the only Serbian gymnast to win a medal was Tereza Kočiš, in 1950, but of course the medal was credited to Yugoslavia. After a quick research some time ago, I discovered that a website credited a medal for Serbia at the 1911 World Championships, but later I discovered that official FIG documents credit the medal as a medal for Yugoslavia. The nation did not even exist at the time, but FIG is so crazy they officially consider it did.

    • Yeah, there's certainly things to complain about from an athletes' perspective, but snow should really not be much of an issue indeed. Mostly things like the enormous geographical spread and it's consequences like there not being one big opening ceremony and everything being spread around a bunch of small Olympic 'villages'/accomodations - so not really the Olympic feeling and atmosphere for the athletes since they'll mostly just stay around athletes of their own sport as in any regular competition.   We'll be going very near to the Olympic area in a few weeks (Coppa Italia in Falcade), let's see what things look like by then.
    • need to work on the celebrations... or just drop them?   Btw, these jerseys suck and I remember Zambia playing in all white with red numbers. At least they have orange on national flag but still...
    • British Columbia in general and Vancouver in particular are awesome and it’s great more people got to discover it thanks to Vancouver 2010.
    • And of course the British being famous for curmudgeons, there were always plenty of curmudgeons to quote.  Then of course from the opening ceremony and the cycle race on the very first morning it was obviously going to be triumph, so everyone just shut up for a while.
    • Yep, the amount of emergency services I heard at some point was a little extreme (for our little town), so I checked what was going on and saw they were all being called to a specific location. Until then I thought maybe it was part of a parade of trucks and agricultural vehicles that was on it's way from the next town over, decorated with lights and stuff.   Since I knew it was on the parade route, I was sure one of those big vehicles had hit people somehow (there were, besides the many vehicles, also two helicopters on the way, meaning it certainly wasn't about a single victim).   We picked our bikes and went to take a look, absolutely chaos in the area. Never saw so many services combined together, fire trucks from 20km away, ambulance after ambulance came racing by, people frantically trying to make way for them (the roads weren't really closed yet).   While there we heard someone who had been close say that the parade hadn't arrived yet and what seemed to have happened was that a car from the other side came onto the roundabout and simply never turned. "It's a massive drama over there, unbelievable", he said.   Quite quickly rumours started spreading of course, the first one turned out to be true: a middle aged (local) woman was behind the wheel and seems to have become unwell. Local security camera showed the car going at high speed right before the roundabout.   Plenty of rumours going around in terms of who were involved of course, and people keeping each other up to date to see if they know this or that family and such...   Never expected my little town to be big news in the Netherlands, even including some breaking broadcasts, live reporters and everything, damn. By far the biggest thing to happen here in my memory

    • For me, these were very good Olympics, and British sport benefited greatly from them, and is still benefiting. I fear it will be much worse here. Canada also benefited very good on Vancouver 2010 – this is very good see in the medal standings of subsequent Winter Games after 2010 and earlier.
    • Nobody hates Britain more than the British media so… I recall it being quite a pessimistic tone before the London games started.
    • I'm curious what was written before London 2012? Did they attack their own country, or did they just keep quiet?
