Biathlon 2022 - 2023 Discussion Thread

Recommended Posts

Bunch of news today:

The Summer of 2023 will see a formal Summer Biathlon Series.  Blink, Martin Forcade Nordic Festival and the Summer Biathlon Championships will be a part of it.  It also implies that there will be other events.

Jakov Fak has announced that he will continue for at lest one more season.  ""He told me he was going to continue until the next Olympics, but I don't know if he was being completely honest when he told me that," laughs Janez Maric , coach of the national team."

Remo Krug has been announced as the new Swiss Men's Coach.  The former German and Austrian coach brings a long history of biathlon coaching experience.

Dorothea Wierer, this time in an interview that I can link to, continued to be non-committal for next season.  She explained that as she came from a rather larger family, she has always wanted to have one herself.  - "At the moment it's more yes than no, but I still have to clear my head and completely disconnect before making the final decision. When you reach the end of your career and you have won more than you thought, doubts arise and you ask yourself questions.

Many write to me and ask me to continue. I'm happy, it's an extra boost, because it means they care about biathlon as much as I do."

"Since my marriage to Stefano I have been happy in my life, I have found the right person. It is really important to feel happy every day and even when traveling.

The question is how much longer am I going to lead this life.  I grew up in a large family and having my own has always been my dream."

Martin Perrillat Bottonet has retired.

"It's my turn to bow out with a career full of emotions, good and bad times followed by two years of nightmare due to overtraining, from which I did not recover, here is the main reason for my departure .. the desire, the motivation and the heart were gone.

I would like to thank all my friends with whom I experienced these magical moments, my club and committee coaches for all the support they gave me. The page is now turned, room for the continuation and courage for all the others."

Baserga in the B-team? What are the Swiss waiting for?

No idea.  I think that she will be on the WC circuit.  The Swiss have 4 entries to each race.

Ukraine has removed "Olga Abramova, Ekaterina Bekh and Oksana Moskalenk, three biathletes of Russian origin, had been dismissed from the national team of Ukraine , officially because they did not did not "meet the criteria" established internally. Unofficially, it is their country of origin that poses a problem."

    • Does the CAS have the authority to address from someone who believes the judges made a mistake in a given discipline? Pizzolato's last attempt at Paris 2024, which earned him the bronze medal, was controversial, but what does the CAS have to do with it? Even if the judges made a mistake then, the result won't change and this isn't the only case where someone feels wronged with this in world of sports. Unless, of course, they have some evidence of corruption or something like that
    • If Pizzolato will to return, would it be to the 86 kg category, or the 94 kg category, like Nasar? In 2024, they were both in the 89 kg category, which will no longer be at the Olympics, but in 2021 in Tokyo, Pizzolato won a medal in the 81 kg category.   Of course, it's unclear what's going on with the rape accusations- personally, unfortunately, I don't think he was ever a sweet angel- he was accused of other immoral things also 10 years ago, but gang rape? I find that hard to believe... Besides, Moldova has appealed about his bronze medal from Paris 2024 to the CAS- the verdict was supposed to be in February. Do you know anything about this? Did they have any grounds for this lawsuit at all?
    • Ukraine won 6 gold medals out of 10 in the women's competotion  + 1 silver and 1 bronze. Where do they get these girls from? It's always been a strong country, but they have never dominated like this. I wonder if their training methods would work in another country and if their coaches have any offerts to job from other countries? However, there is a significant decline in women's judo in Ukraine, so maybe they have directed all their resources and money towards wrestling?   In fact, Ukraine dominates Europe as much as Japan does the world- they have the best school in women's wrestling. In 2024, Ukraine only won 1 silver medal at the Paris Olympics? So even domination in Europe doesn't guarantee even 1 gold medal at the Olympics. Although, of course, if Italy for example, can't even win 1 bronze medal at the European Championships, then there's no point in even going to the World Championships...
    • Sablikova started on the road cycling and just almost qualified for Rio 2016. Maybe Lollobrigida would like to join the Italian track team? She has the good character and 2 medals at the Olympics, one in winter and one in summer, would be a legendary achievement, not only in Italy.   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martina_Sáblíková
    • One Wiebes is worth more than the all Italian team with Balsamo/Fidanza, etc., that much clear. Even if the Netherlands loses its dominance in the men's sprint, Wiebes will win 2-3 gold medals in other events. Just relax, man.
    • I'm most worried about our women's team in the pursuit – we have a reserve squad, but not advancing to the top 8 is a shame. We recently competed with out 1 team and had not good in 1 round. It doesn't look good. And the Netherlands are already taking Wiebes to the track team and will soon dominate the Madison/Omnium as well. Balsamo and Paternoster haven't made any progress for years and the our women's team at the Olympics has little chance to win a medal. Italy might even win World Championship/European Championship gold in the years after the Olympics, etc., but when the real fight comes, the UK or the USA will always beat us
    • Track cycling is one of the few sports where there is no host nation quota, so  will need to work hard to achieve our quotas.  It's not our best sport, but was happy to see Top 10 results in the Elimination Race for Grant Koontz and Emma Jimenez Palos (who is just 18!).
    • Yes, I saw the same thing you did @clemsonbeav (on both accounts) but I agree it looks pretty stock.
