Winter is going, Spring is coming...and traditionally, this means that's time for the Youth Zone Championships...

so far, the African Cadets & Junior Champs are the only to be already done and dusted...

Final Medal Table

:ALG ALG  2 - 7 - 9
:LBA LBA  0 - 1 - 1
:SEN SEN  0 - 0 - 3
:NGR NGR  0 - 0 - 2

as usual, it's been a one-side show, with Egypt winning basically every event (only Algeria could stop them from an unbelievable clean sweep by taking a couple of individual gold medals home)...

to be noticed, except for the Bronze medal won by Lybia, all of the individual honors went to Egypt and/or Algeria...the silver won by Lybia and all the bronze medals won by Senegal and Nigeria came from the team events...and just because there was a free spot to be taken on third step of the podium...

as expected, the Host Nation dominated the side, taking advantage also by the absence of the 3 continental powerhouses, CHN, KOR and JPN...

very good outcome also for Hong Kong...

and despite the starting field being easier than usual, it's nice to see a good number of different countries (some of them not really known for their fencing tradition) being capable of winning at least a medal...

more to come, as the European Champs are also underway...

I encountered an article about a young Dutch fencer recently, I wonder if she can play a role of significance here. Ava Emanuel if I remember correctly, should be in the junior class I think.

Oh yes, the elephant in the room no Mexican sports writer knows and plainly ignores.

Since Paola Pliego’s shameful false doping 6 years ago, masterminded, by the Mexican federation’s president himself, she and every other fencer from the state of Queretaro have been recruited by Usmanov himself to compete for Uzbekistan, as said state’s federation was expelled from the national one.

Yes, Ava Emanuel is one of the 3 Dutch girls that competed in the women's Junior Foil...

Elise Butin Bik was the best among them, reaching the knockout stage, where she lost in the round of 64 against the Russian Anastasia Beznosikova with the score of 15-3...at the end of the day, she ended up in 51st place...

Valerie Buijse and Ava Emanuel, instead, were eliminated already after the pool stage and ended up in 73rd and 75th plce, respectively...

Tomorrow they will enter the team tournament, too...in the round of 32 they will face Sweden (on paper it's not an impossible matchup)...

in case they beat the Swedes, no.1 seed Russia are awaiting in the round of 16...

    • 2 things...   first, for what concerns the cooperation between inline skating and speedskating federations...sorry to disppoint some of you, but there's a great cooperation between them   the point is that many "summer" skaters just don't want to try the ice because they have too much to give up for that   you name places like Collalbo or Baselga, but for the "summer skating" guys from centeral and southern regions it's not an option, it's not that they make it for a living with those disciplines, they have to focus on their studies and build a post-competitive sport career and they just can't place themselves into a hole in the mountains when they maybe are studying in some prestigious universities in the big cities   as I already posted more than once, the idea of covering one of those tracks in the mountains was something idiotic, a political concession impossible to be sustained   the one and only chance to build a true legacy and an efficient, attractive national training center was to build a permanent indoor oval in Milan, beside the Forum   that would have given all the "summer skaters" a true opportunity to try the ice experience and at the same time find the most useful, attractive, prestigious places to continue their studies and try and manage them together with their sports career   any other place wouldn't stand a chance   second...don't give Salvini any credit he doesn't deserve...actually, I think he doesn't even know that in Cortina there's a sliding sports track    it's not thanks to him that the Cortina track's building finally went underway
