Already 9 countries in the medal table after the first day (sadly only European countries won medals today) reserved to the thrilling and awesome Team events (really shame that IOC never introduced this to the Olympics..) France leading the tally with 3 golds + 1 silver and 1 bronze ahead of the Czechs with 2 golds 3 silvers and one bronze, 3rd in the medal standing is Germany with 1 gold and 1 bronze.

From SVK view another disappointing performances especially in the M U23 K1, how such team with Grigar and Málek can not win a medal is for me just beyond understanding. total failure, I have no words, same for the U23 M C1 and both womens C1 teams where we clearly expected to medal,

so all in all only 1 medal from the team events (W U23 K1 gold) is a failure.

From now the tournament continue with the individual events, Tomorrow the heats of all U23 events (M C1 and W K1 in the morning and W C1 + M K1 during the afternoon session)

This morning we had the heats of the U23 M C1 and W K1

here the qualified for the semifinals

U23 M C1

directly from Heat 1 - :SVK:CZE:POL:FRA:CZE:GER:IRL:ITA:SEN:CZE:GER:GER:FRA:ESP:AUS:GBR:SLO:ITA:RUS and :GBR

from Repechage Heat 2 - :AUS:RUS:SUI:ESP:POL:RUS:SLO:SEN:FRA and :GBR

what a disastrous flop from our guys Gurecka and Dodok both not even able to make it to the semifinals...at least Marko Mirgorodský confirming his ambitions and medal contender status qualifying easily as winner of heat 1

U23 W K1

directly from Heat 1 - :BRA:FRA:GBR:CZE:ESP:AUT:SVK:ITA:POL:SVK:NED:AND:SVK:CZE:FRA:ESP:FRA:NZL:RUS and :GER

and from Repechage Heat 2 - :CZE:BRA:JPN:GER:AUS:ESP:GER:AUT:USA and :CHN

all 3 entries qualified from Heat 1, more or less without noticeable troubles, good sign to see Simona Maceková a C1 specialist doing so good and is able to make the semis also in her secondary event

in some 50 minutes will start the afternoon session with full qualifiers for the U 23 W C1 and M K1 classes

Not too much progress from outside Europe. :dunno:

yes, only 4 in the M C1 U23 is a very low number, the positive thing there much more chances in the womens categories and even strong medal chances

here the qualified for the semifinals of the U23 M K1 and W C1

U23 W C1

directly from Heat 1 - :AUT:CZE:RUS:FRA:BRA:FRA:ESP:SVK:GER:GBR:SVK:ESP:GER:FRA:CZE:JPN:SVK:CAN:GER and :AUS

from Repechage Heat 2 - :GBR:SLO:AUS:CZE:GBR:SLO:RUS:AUS:BRA and :CHN

Like the W U23 K1 also in the W U23 C1 all our girls advance to the semifinals already from 1st heat without big problems

U23 M K1

directly from Heat 1 - :ITA:AUT:ESP:GER:SLO:SWE:ITA:NZL:AUS:SVK:FRA:CZE:SLO:AUT:FRA:SLO:SUI:NZL:ESP:FRA:MAR:ESP:GBR:GER:NZL:RUS:SVK:UKR:AUS and :CZE

from Repechage Heat 2 - :GBR:GER:ITA:AUT:SVK:SUI:POL:ARG:RUS and :POL

Really worrying shape of Jakub Grigar this year, he didn´t made a single finals in the 3 world cup stages and at the Europeans last month, this U23 Worlds were expected to be a small restart for his confidence, but his perf in the 1st heat wasn´t really impressive at all. Jakub Stanovský again poor effort, needed Heat 2 to qualify. Incredible, that from the 3 guys here the most impressive was Andrej Málek who lost against both Grigar and Stanovský in the national trials for this years seniors NT

Tomorrow the Championships continue with the same qualification program as today but this time in the Juniors categories. M C1 + W K1 in the morning and W C1 + M K1 afternoon.

Mornings session Recap of the qualified for the semifinals of the Juniors M C1 and W K1

JUNIORS M C1

directly from Heat 1 - :FRA:CZE:ESP:FRA:SVK:SLO:ESP:GBR:BRA:CZE:ITA:SVK:ESP:GER:GBR:ITA:FRA  :MRI:clap::GER and :AUS

from Repechage Heat 2 - :CZE:POL:SLO:GBR:BRA:POL:ITA:GER:SLO and :SVK

All 3 entries qualified, but Fedor Červenka really with huge luck as the very last qualified from 2nd heat, anyway a SVK medal in this event would be a huge shock

JUNIORS W K1

directly from Heat 1 - :SVK:GBR:USA:CZE:ITA:FRA:SLO:FRA:GBR:GBR:CZE:CZE:ARG:GER:SLO:GER:RUS:AUT:FRA and :SVK

from Repechage Heat 2 - :SUI:USA:USA:SVK:RUS:KAZ:NZL:POL:ESP and :SUI

Soňa Stanovská one of our medal contenders here, started very well, as she won the heat 1 by 3 and half seconds, really impressive considering we are speaking about K1, which is usually the closest event

    • How wonderful!   I met the national rowing (and beach rowing) coach of EST/LTU/LAT on the way to ice hockey one day, who's Canadian by the way. I also flew home on the same flight as JC Schoonmaker's mom and friends, so we chatted for a bit.
    • Yea I only used transit besides this Uber / bus to the airport and back. All the venues were at the end of the line, so it allowed you to speak with other fans/volunteers etc. I even met Corrine Stoddard's mom after the first session of short track on the way back, and told her to remember our conversation if she won a medal later in the Olympics. We know how that ended up...
    • I used public transit the entire time I was in Milan.   My first day was a doozy, because I had to two flights to reach Malpensa, and then the train into town was delayed, and then I got confused a station and boarded a tram instead of the metro, proceeded to travel in the wrong direction, got off, walked back to the station, found the metro, got off a station early, walked around a kilometer to my hotel, and checked in.   My colleagues mostly took cabs upon arrival, but I deduced to take the frugal approach. That said, I was a true public transit professional by the time I left Milan.   I actually enjoyed my rides to and from venues, because I'd just chat up fans and volunteers from different countries. It helped me learn more about the city too.
    • It's the olympics, sleep is for the weak!    The first day i got there i was on a 12 hour flight from l.a to rome (flight that left mid day), lay over, another flight to milan, uber to hotel, then right away to speed skating (1500m men), then after uber to hockey venue for women's gold final, then after the celebrations uber to the hotel, i ended up being awake about 36 hours that day, the next morning i thought to go sightseeing in the center of milan, but ended up sleeping until like 2pm..... and had speed skating/short track that night
    • I tried to get onto the metro multiple times and gave up    I had just arrived the day of from Bangkok (12 hr flight) and was just exhausted and wanted to sleep
    • Plus, you missed out on a potential metro ride with me, which is quite priceless in my opinion
    • My hotel was very close to Rho so was easy to get there, but it was so far from the hockey venue that after the women's gold medal match it was so expensive to get back, and also the next day after the usa slovakia semis it took forever, the asshole driver took the city and not the freeway
    • Uber cost me $224 CAD to get back to the hotel from the OC. It basically prevented me from buying tickets to a speed skating session
    • Romania's national team coach, Mircea Lucescu, has died half an hour ago He was in hospital since March 30th, just before the friendly match against Slovakia. Unbelievable how the life can have such turns...in March 26th he was in Istanbul playing the WC qualifying play-off vs Turkiye and now he died.    Thank you very much for every moments you bring us in your huge career (he's on 3rd place in a most trophies won in career, after Ferguson and Guardiola) and may your soul rest in peace, Mr. Lucescu.
