Ahmedabad considering a bid for 2026
ExpandArguably Swimming in Particular is one of the more expensive sports to host because they are few facilities that are both big enough and have enough seats to not make it seem tiny. Like London still has the Olympic pool but the seating facilities are pretty small and couldn’t really be used for an able bodied world champs or a commonwealth games. (I attended a session of the World Para there in 2019.)
Victoria had a perfectly fine swimming venue that already hosted swimming in 2006 and also the world short course swimming champs in December but the government refused to use any venues in Melbourne.
ExpandThe more interesting prospect might be what it would mean for the European Championships/European Games.
Why would this affect those at all? The Brits already participate in those competitions.
ExpandI don't think it will be a catalyst for them to join Asia. It's not like the Commonwealth Games provide much sporting opportunity for Australia/New Zealand. It's only one event every four years.
Australia/New Zealand seem to be content on focusing on World Championships/World Cup events. Money wise it is still expensive for them to travel to Asia for continental events. This isn't Europe where you can drive to multiple European countries (or take a cheap airline).
A limited amount of integration has already started with Australia joining Asia for football and Oceanian countres are also allowed to compete at Asian Games in certain sports.
I wonder if the Comm Games were to stop existing would this trigger further integration of Oceania into Asia for sports? Oceanian really is isn't a viable sports region.
ExpandAnd now no state government in Australia will bid for it and they have probably made Brisbane 2032 get the plug pulled soon as well.
Brisbane 2032 is safe. It has bipartisan support at every level of government (federal, state, local).
Expand‘Since awarding Victoria the Games, the Government has made decisions to include more sports and an additional regional hub, and changed plans for venues, all of which have added considerable expense, often against the advice of the Commonwealth Games Federation and Commonwealth Games Australia," the CGF added in its statement.’
They sound fuming.
Victoria could've hosted a budget games because they have all the needed venues but they instead decided to go forward with this regional fantasy.
Mayor of Perth is pushing to take over as host
ExpandNetball be desperate to get into the Olympics if it is as the Commonwealth are the biggest tournament for it.
First they need to fix their gender problem. As far as I'm aware World Netball still refuses to sanction international netball for men.
Having a regional games without using any of the existing venues in Melbourne was always a terrible idea.
Russia and Belarus to compete at the Asian Games for Paris 2024 qualification

So what are the odds that the Asian Games will actually go ahead this year?
ExpandSwimming is my favourite sport to watch along with Ice hockey Diving and Athletics. I would watch it everyday lol
I follow swimming most of the year including meets where no Australians compete like European Championships starting this week. Other meets I'll be paying attention to this month are Junior Worlds, Junior Pan Pacs, Aussie Short Course Champs (selection meet for Short Course Worlds), Duel in the Pool. Another busy month.
That was easily the fastest 200 free relay split of all time by Titmus.
ExpandDoes anyone here have problems accessing the results page? I’ve tried to access the page on three different browsers on my MacBook but nothing comes out. But I can access the page on my iPad and on a Windows based computer.

Works fine for me in Chrome on Linux and I don't have a MacBook to test.
Id there an entry list PDF for swimming anywhere?
Canada's swimming team is gonna be so depleted without Oleksiak, Ruck and Sanchez. Women's relays will basically be time trials for the Aussies.
Expandcommonwealth Games is becoming such a farce
what is the purpose of any multigame event ...... I believe it is to foster sports , participation and interest in all the countries which form the nations which are part of the nations involved .... There are 70 odd participants to the games ( but look closely and you will find there are only53 countries in the commonwealth so all the rest are overseas territories or Ok adding isle of man and jersey as seperate team )
so lets look at the 53 countries
an africa group which includes kenya , uganda , whose primary interest would be athletics
a carribean group like jamaica, bahamas etc whose primary interest would be athletics
so possibly 15 -20 odd countries who would have a wider interest in a multigames program which would be divided into
the core dominion countries - UK , Australia , canada and NZ
Large african countries - Nigeria , SA
South asian cluster - India, Pakistan , bangladesh srilanka
SEA cluster - singapore , malaysia
now let us look at the sports they have increased medals in or cut in the last 20 years ( last 5 games )
They have cut shooting 40 to 0 where india dominated , but also the sole medal winner for bangladesh
They have cut wrestling from 14 to 0 where it was a sport where india dominated and nigeria did well and so did pakistan ( this took a lot of effort as they had to change the whole framework as
they have reduced the weightlifting medals from 45 to 15 a sport where india dominates but the smaller oceanic countries like soma, fiji , etc did well in, also pakistan and srilanka get a majority of their medals . I am seeing this as the next target as this is a sport the dominion do badly at and other countries somoa , india and nigeria do well at
so cut a 100 medals here
what sports have they increased or added
aquatics gone up from 48 to an incredible 66 ...... this event is almost wholly dominated by the dominion 4 and SA
cycling gone up from 15 to 26 ...... the event is almost wholely dominated by the dominion 4
lawn bowls gone up from 6 to 11 again a sport dominated by the dominion 4
gymnastics gone up from 15 to 20 odd adding rhythmic gymnastics again a sport dominated by the dominion 4 + cyprus
judo has been added by UK and dropped by Aus every time a desperate ping pong in sport of 14 medals again dominated by UK \
Para atheletics around 10-12 events carefully selected to reflect the dominion 4 only 11 /12 medals only by them
triatholon and squash with 10 or so medals have been added which are events where all the gold medals are won by the dominion 4
so added a 80 odd medals here
so if you add the athletics program of 60 or so , , almost 200 medals out of 270 or so ( 75% comes in just 6 sports .with the new changes l ) ...... 5 out of these 6 sports almost exclusively the dominion of the 5 dominion countries .........and you cut a 100 medals in sports like weightlifting , wrestling and shooting where non dominion countries did well in and completely dropped shooting and wrestling pretty much mainstay programs
if india protests it is a fair protest ....... this is turning into a dominion games.... of interest of only the 4 dominion countries and possibly SA ........ so go ahead you are killing interest in the CWG in all countries except the 4 dominion countries and SA ............ anyway commonwealth para games , commonwealth youth games , cCWG winter games are already killed .......very soon the main CWG will die or you convert them into a quadrilateral games and drop the multigames tag
ExpandAn expressions of interest process for additional sports to be included in the Victoria 2026 Commonwealth Games has commenced and will involve submissions from international sporting federations with support from recognised or affiliated Australian organisations. The period for consideration will close on 19 August.

ExpandYeah, sailing is a big omission. Archery and tennis should really be on the program as well in my opinion.
Tennis pros would nearly always prioritise the tour over Comm Games. Some even prioritise the tour over the Olympics. If Birmingham were to include tennis it would be competing with an ATP/WTA 1000 tournament on the same week.

This debacle wasn't caused by demands of international organisations/federations but mostly of the Victorian government's making. They could've hosted a budget concious Comm Games but instead chose this bloated and wasteful regional model instead. This was an entirely self-inflicted failure.
