  2. Frenzel crowns triple German victory in Lillehammer The first Individual Gundersen event in Lillehammer ended with a triple victory for Team Germany. Superstar Eric Frenzel was back on top and stopped teammate Johannes Rydzek by 15 seconds in the end. The remaining spot on the podium was taken by Fabian Rießle. He crossed the finish line 25.8 seconds after Frenzel. Johannes Rydzek surprised with the victory in the jumping round after his new mastery of the jumping technique met with a little bit of head wind, resulting in a 104.5 metre jump, the longest jump of the day by 2.5 metres. 144 points put Rydzek in the pole position and gave him 14 seconds of head start on Japanese superstar Akito Watabe who showed 102 metres (104.4 p.) Espen Andersen stepped up to be a worthy stand-in for his sick teammate Jarl Riiber and captured the third intermediate position with 101 metres and 138.2 points, putting him 23 seconds behind Rydzek. The race shaped up to become another festival for the German team with Eric Frenzel, Fabian Rießle and Björn Kircheisen all positioning themselves very well. Frenzel ranked fourth and started into the race just one second after Andersen. Kircheisen and Rießle ranked tenth and eleventh respectively and had to make up 56 and 59 seconds on their leading teammate. At first, the cross-country part seemed to be a clear affair with Johannes Rydzek looking strong in three first laps but apparently, the World Cup leader had started his race too fast. His teammate Eric Frenzel, who had been skiing together with Japan’s Akito Watabe and Norwegian Espen Andersen for the first part, caught up with the yellow bib and passed Rydzek on the last lap. Frenzel was in an unbeatable shape and so his teammate had to concede defeat but was still satisfied with his second rank. Behind the pursuers Frenzel, Watabe and Andersen, Björn Kircheisen and Fabian Rießle came closer and closer as to be expected of the two fast skiers. Ultimately, only Rießle passed Andersen and in a finish line sprint also Akito Watabe to capture the third position. Watabe had to be satisfied with the fourth position in the end, Kircheisen stole the fifth place from local hero Andersen who still posted a career-best individual result with rank six one day after his first-ever podium result with the team yesterday. Espen Andersen’s teammates Jørgen Graabak and Mikko Kokslien also entered the Top Ten today but the German team performance was amazing with youngsters Vinzenz Geiger and Manuel Faißt also ranking in the Top Ten, taking the count of Germans to six in the best ten. 3. Diggins tops field in Lillehammer The USA's Jessica Diggins has recorded her second ever individual World Cup victory on stage two of the Lillehammer mini tour. World Cup overall leader Heidi Weng (NOR) was second +4.8 seconds back with her teammate Marit Bjoergen in third place +15.8 second off of Diggins. Heading into the final competition of the 3-day mini tour Weng will have a 20.7 second head start over Ingvild Flugstad Oestberg (NOR) in the 10 km C pursuit. Oestberg finished 5th on day two just 1.4 seconds from the podium. Third on tomorrow's start list will be Diggins +21.6 seconds after Weng. Full Results Here

  5. Jansrud's winning streak in Val d'Isère The first downhill of the season was held under amazing conditions on the „O.K.“ course in Val d’Isère. The sun was out, the snow was hard but responsive, the crowd was cheering and the athletes eager to grab that first downhill title. Norway’s Kjetil Jansrud topped the field to took his second win in two days, as Peter Fill (2nd +0.26) and Aksel Lund Svindal (3rd +0.33) rounded out the podium. The new starting order procedure resulted in an interesting start list for this downhill, with Kjetil Jansrud picking an early start number and wearing bib n°3. It looks like this strategy paid off, as the winner of yesterday’s super-g also claimed the win in the downhill today, to start the speed season in the best possible way. Italy’s Peter Fill already showed constant training results in the past days in Val d’Isère with two second place finishes and proved that he can beat the Viking’s pace in the second training run. With bib 7 for today’s race, the downhill globe winner was able to lock up a second place and his 15th World Cup podium. Despite missing out the second half of last season because of a torn ACL and coming back to training only a few weeks ago, Aksel Lund Svindal showed incredible skills and a solid shape on today’s downhill, where he finished third. Walking away with two podium placements is unexpected and extremely motivating for the attacking Viking. The speed skiers are now leaving Val d’Isère and will gather again in Val Gardena on 16th and 17th December 2016 for a super-g and a downhill. But the tech skiers are taking over the “O.K.” course in Val d’Isère to hold a giant slalom tomorrow, with first run at 10.00 CET and second run at 13.00 CET. Full Results Here Kjetil Jansrud
  6. Halfvarsson keeps on rolling in Lillehammer Sweden's Calle Halfvarsson has made it two for two in Lillehammer by winning the 10 km free technique competition on stage 2 of the three day mini tour event. It was a battle to the finish line in the interval start competition with Halfvarsson's teammate Marcus Hellner. In the end Halfvarsson completed the course in a time of 23:04.9 to win by just 0.8 seconds ahead of Hellner. Russia's Sergey Ustiugov made his return to the World Cup podium for the first time this season in third place +6.7 seconds off the lead. It was an impressive top 10 today with 7 different nations represented and 9 nations in the top 15. With his two victories Halfvarsson will begin tomorrow's 15 km classic technique pursuit competition with a 28.1 second lead over Ustiugov. Hellner will head out third, 9.8 seconds behind the Russian. Full Results Here

  18. Bertagna and Harlaut shine in Mönchengladbach Silvia Bertagna competing in Gladbach Finals The second competition of the FIS Super Series big air tour took place on Friday evening in Moenchengladbach (GER) under the lights of the city’s Sparkassenpark. The crowd gathered around the custom-built scaffold jump set-up saw some of the world’s finest big air freeskiers battling it out in the quest for not just the Super Series title, but also the first big air World Cup crystal globe, to be awarded at the end of the season. At the end of Friday’s competition it was Silvia Bertagna (ITA) and Henrik Harlaut (SWE) finishing on top of the podium at another exceptionally entertaining big air competition in a season that has already been stacked with them. Siliva Bertagna with a historic win On the ladies side 30-year-old Silvia Bertagna took her first ever World Cup victory, making it also a historic day for Italian freestyle skiing. Bertagna secured the first FIS Freestyle Skiing World Cup win for Italy in more than 12 years, after Karl Heinz Molling won the ski cross competition in Pozza di Fassa back in 2004. After qualifying from the 4th spot, Bertagna stepped it up in the finals and had no problems on any of her two counting tricks. With switch 720 mute grab and 900 tail grab Italian rider locked up 169.40 points, what turned out to be just enough for the win. “Today was a great night for me”, said Bertagna following the awards ceremony, ”Things didn't go so smooth in training yesterday so I wasn't all that confident. In the end, I performed much better than I expected… It really is a great feeling to be here today.” Bertagna was followed by Emma Dahlstrom (SWE) who landed her trademark cork 720 tail grab and switch 720 double japan grab and finished the competition with a final score of 162.20. It was the Swedish skier’s third big air World Cup podium in three events on the season, and it ensured that the 24-year-old would hold on to the leader’s yellow bib that she first earned with a win at the season opener in El Colorado. “It's a great feeling to be the overall World Cup leader after this amazing event in Moenchengladbach,” said Dahlstorm, “I've advanced from third place in Milan to second place here, so let's see what will be the outcome next time.” Crowd favourite Lisa Zimmermann (GER) rounded up the ladies’ podium in Moenchengladbach. After taking top spot in qualifications, and landing her switch 720 high safety in the first run, Zimmermann looked to be only one stomped trick short of claiming her second World Cup win in a row. However, her execution was lacking on her signature 900 in her next two attempts, and she would fall behind both Bertagna and Dahlstrom. “I was a bit saddened especially after my second run” said Zimmermann after the competition, “I wanted to show my fans and family here what I have in store. It could have worked out better. Third place is still not bad and the other girls did really well. It was a great atmosphere and a great home crowd.” After 3rd place on the day Zimmermann is now leading the Super Series ranking with 160 points, 10 points ahead of Bertagna and 20 points ahead of Dahlstrom. Harlaut comes back on top of the podium In men’s competition the skiers were in top gear, throwing down a sophisticated combination of doubles and triples and putting all kinds of pressure on the judges. With the winner from the last Super Series event in Milan (ITA), Kai Mahler (SUI), finding himself outside of the finals, as well as names like Jesper Tjader (SWE) and Klaus Finne (NOR), you know the competition level on Friday was world-class. Harlaut would own the day, making an impressive comeback to the top of the podium by displaying his signature creativity, technicality and, above all, style. He stomped dub bio 1260 safety grab in his first run before baking it up with a switch 1440 tail to safety grab that gave him a two-jump total score of 177.00. Harlaut not only won the competition, but also increased his lead in the overall big air World Cup standing to 63 points over Luca Schuhler (SUI). On top of this, he is now only one point behind Oystein Braaten (NOR) on the Super Series’ leaderboard. “I’m stoked about today's win” said Harlaut, “I wish I would have performed even better though. I know I can do better than this, but today it was enough for victory. But my favourite was Luca Schuler. I love his tricks and landings. He got me all hyped up.” Not only did Schuler impress Harlaut, he impressed the judges too, and his switch dub misty 1440 and dub bio 1080, performed with his favorite bow’n’arrow grab, convinced them tonight to award Schuler with a combined score of 174.20 points and second place on the day. Third place went to Eirik Sateroy (NOR), who managed to slide into the mens’ podium once again with the same tricks combinations that he performed in Milan, including a massive triple 1440 safety grab followed by a switch double 1080 tail grab. Sateroy continues to amaze, securing his second podium in just his third-ever World Cup competition. The Norwegian young gun has been on fire lately, and with this performance he gives a clear signal he’s a one to watch out for in the near future. “I’m so excited. This is so amazing. It's my third World Cup and placing third is totally amazing. I couldn’t be more excited than this”, said Sateroy after the award ceremony. FIS Freestyle World Cup action continues on 17th of December with the halfpipe competitions going down in Cooper (USA). The big air World Cup will come back in 2017 with the final Super Series event taking place on 11th of February in Quebec City (CAN). Full results are available Here
  19. Surprise podium at opening Lake Louise downhill The new speed starting order that was unveiled on the ladies' tour on Friday was designed to keep television fans tuned into the broadcast longer than in the past. But anyone who stopped watching the opening downhill at Lake Louise after the top 20 starters would have missed the majority of the podium. Sofia Goggia, the Italian who one week earlier picked up the first podium of her career, took over the lead from Sweden's Kajsa Kling sporting bib 28. And the very next athlete on course, Slovenia's Ilka Stuhec, blasted into the lead with the 29th start. When the snow spray settled, Stuhec claimed her career-first podium and victory with a 0.22-second lead over Goggia. Kling held onto the third-place position, 0.31 seconds back. All three athletes were ecstatic with their results. "I had a feeling that I could show some more than just average [results] around 10th to 15th place, that I could ski good and I could ski fast and apparently, today, the fastest," Stuhec said. "I knew I could ski fast and I just needed to put it in a race and I did." Kling was eyeing her career-first victory before the later runners bumped her to third, but it still marks a solid start to the season for the Swede. She has only one previous podium from the St. Moritz super-G in 2013. "I think I was pretty stable the whole training week and it felt good during the preseason as well, so I am happy with this," said Kling. "I feel like I can do some parts better, so hopefully I can nail it tomorrow." For Goggia, the result at Lake Louise was a bit of retribution against a mountain that hasn't been so kind in the past. "This was really unexpected even if Killington was a little bit more [unexpected] because I feel more confident in downhill and in super-G than in giant slalom. ... I just tried to ski without any expectations," remarked Goggia. Three years ago she suffered a torn ACL in a crash at Lake Louise. "I had to face my demons on these days. ... It was a big surprise when I saw the green light. I was like, 'Oh my God' that I'm going to do that on this slope." The ladies will contest another downhill at Lake Louise on Saturday. Full race results are available Here Ilka Stuhec
