At the start it was a three way deal between IOC IIHF and NHL before the Nagano 1998, even 1 year before it was quite unthinkable that NHL will be stopped during the Olympics, it never happened before, but by some magic they found the deal and IOC´s part was covering the Insurance costs which are really considerable. they paid them also for 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014 but already before Sochi they said this will be the last time. so basically we all knew this will happen.
  18. The whole problem started by IOC when they announced they will not cover the Players insurances anymore after the Sochi games. IIHF presented to the NHL their plan B with partial covering this problem, but NHL wanted the full cost or nothing. that´s the whole thing behind the PC 2018 NHL ban
