  5. MEN´S UNDER 18 DIVISION I GROUP A 2018 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Latvia returns to U18 elite Sorokins’ new-look roster triumphs in Riga Latvia made an immediate return to the top division after winning the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship Division I Group A on home ice at Arena Riga. The Baltic nation wrapped up the title with a game to spare, winning its first four games in a competitive group. After some surprise results in the early stages, notably newly-promoted Slovenia’s 3-2 win over Denmark and Germany’s 1-0 verdict against last year’s runner-up, Kazakhstan, that consistency was enough to settle the destination of the gold medal. Going into game four against the Danes, Latvia knew that victory would bring gold. After an early scare, the host ran out 4-1 winners thanks to a trio of third-period goals before 2,200 fans. That result ensured that only Germany could match Latvia’s tally of 12 points, and the head-to-head meeting between the countries had already ended in a 3-1 home win. Again, though, Latvia had to battle to get the win. The Germans took the lead with a power-play goal midway through the first period: Yannick Valenti converted a power-play chance when he collected the puck on the boards and surged forward to fire home from between the hash marks. Latvia tied it up before the first intermission thanks to a breakaway goal. Glebs Prohorenkovs released his HK Riga team-mate Patriks Marcinkevics and the move ended with a well-placed shot from the left face-off spot. The home team hit the front for the first time in the middle frame with Marcinkevics involved again. He won the puck in the corner, turned away from his opponent and sent a delicious feed onto the stick of Vladislavs Barkovskis for the 2-1 goal. Deniss Fjordorovs added a third in the 49th minute, taking advantage of the extra space during a passage of four-on-four play. He took Ernests Osinieks’ pass into German territory and used the decoy move of Gustavs Millars to split the defence and allow a shot that gave Florian Mnich no chance in the German net. Having secured its gold medals, Latvia went on to complete a perfect record of five wins from five games thanks to a tight 2-1 success over Kazakhstan on Sunday evening. Osnieks scored on a 5-on-3 power play to cancel out Yernar Musabayev’s early opener for the Kazakhs, then Millars grabbed the winner in the 56th minute. Kazakhstan’s defeat cost the team a bronze medal. This year’s Latvian team was almost completely fresh. Incoming head coach Olegs Sorokins, a much-travelled defenceman in a playing career that began in 1991/92 and only came to an end last season, shuffled the pack. Only goalie Janis Voris returned from the roster that was relegated in Slovakia a year ago, and he impressed in a tournament where he allowed just two goals in his three starts with an SVG of over 96%. He was voted Best Goaltender of the tournament while two Germans won the other awards: Moritz Seider as Best Defenceman and Yannick Valenti as Best Forward. In general, it was the defence that impressed on the host’s side: the tournament’s scoring leaders came from Germany, which scored 22 times in five games with Valenti potting five of them and Taro Jentzsch leading the scoring with seven (1+6) points. No Latvian player made a big impact on the scoring charts, but the team had 14 different skaters with at least one point over the course of the tournament. Germany took silver behind Latvia, with Denmark grabbing bronze despite losing three of its five games. The Danes tied with Kazakhstan on six points, but the head-to-head verdict went their way thanks to a 4-2 victory when the teams met on Thursday. At the foot of the table, Slovenia dropped to Division IB despite a promising start to the tournament. A narrow 1-2 loss against the host was followed by a 3-2 victory over Denmark to give the Slovenes a great chance of staying at this level after last season’s promotion. However, it all went wrong after that: Slovenia lost its next three games by big margins, including a crucial 0-5 loss against Norway. That was the Norwegians’ only success of the tournament, but it ensured a head-to-head advantage over Slovenia and kept them in Division IA for another season. Results Thread

  10. MEN´S UNDER 18 DIVISION II GROUP A 2018 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Glorious success High drama sends GB U18s to Div. IB Down but never out. A game of two halves sees Great Britain's under-18 national team finish top at the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 World Championship Division II Group A in the Estonian capital of Tallinn. The victory in Tallinn marks a winning start for Tony Hand as head coach of Great Britain's U18 national team and a significant improvement to last year's fifth-place finish. 16-year-old Mason Alderson finished as Great Britain's top scorer with 9 (6+3) in five games followed by Kieran Brown on 8 (4+4) points. “This is an amazing achievement. They have done fantastic. Everyone pulled together. We knew we were up against some great opposition but we have come on leaps and bounds,” said a delighted Hand following a week of action with many twists and turns. Lithuania finished second, level on points with Great Britain. A dejected Poland finished third, having entered their final game with high hopes and eying an instant return to Division IB. With Great Britain having edged Korea 4-3 during the final round of games, the British contingent joined the home crowd inside Tallinn's Tondiraba Ice Hall to cheer on Estonia. If the hosts grabbed at least a point in their closing game of the tournament against front-runners Poland, the gold medals would be hanging around British necks at the end of the night. 23:31 into the game and following three unanswered goals by first-liners Kamil Walega, Jan Soltys and Jakub Lewandowski, the chase for gold had firmly tilted in Poland's favour. But Estonia sparked into life soon after. A Nikita Puzakov penalty shot crept just over the line and when captain Rasmus Kiik led by example four-and-a-half minutes later and added another it was game on. With 7:51 left of the game, playing four against three, Estonia's Morten Arantez Jurgens hit a wrister from the point to tie the game at three. Thanks to final minute acrobatics by netminder Oliver Soovik, Estonia held on to a morale-boosting point which sent the British young guns ballistic in the stands. The tournament's top scorer Damian Tyczynski (5+7) delightfully scored Poland's overtime winner, but by then Poland had already lost the gold with Estonia finishing fifth. Great Britain got a comfortable start to the tournament, courtesy of a 6-3 win against Estonia followed it up by putting nine past Australia. Their only blip came in their third game. Despite outshooting Poland 40-28 and rallying back from 1-3 to go in front, Poland hit back and replied with two unanswered final frame goals to take all three points. With all left to play for, tight encounters against Lithuania and Korea awaited. Prevailing 3-2 and 4-3 respectively saw Liam Kirk play a pivotal role scoring Great Britain's game winners in both games. With Great Britain celebrating and Poland coming to terms with having to spend another year in Division IIA, silver medallists Lithuania will be left wondering what could have been. Having conceded only eight goals and with Laurynas Lubys being the tournament's top goaltender with a 94.74 save percentage, the Baltic nation got off to a great start. A brace by Martynas Grinius downed pre-tournament favourites Poland, 4-3. They then followed it up with wins against Estonia and Korea which put them on the verge of winning a surprise gold with one round to go. Having needed a regulation-time win against Great Britain, they fell short in a tight encounter 3-2, which was to be their only loss of points during a fine tournament by Aleksej Nikoforov's youngsters. At the other end of the table, newcomers Australia showed signs of promise upon their arrival despite losing 1-4 against fourth-placed Korea in their opener. It was to be as close as they would get in Tallinn. Following five straight defeats, including 0-8 against second from bottom Estonia, Australia will have to regroup in Division IIB come next season. 12. WOMEN´S DIVISION II GROUP A 2018 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dutch delight in Maribor Impressive Netherlands cruise to gold The Netherlands powered to gold in the 2018 IIHF Ice Hockey Women’s World Championship Division II Group A with a flawless week’s work in Maribor, Slovenia. Unbeaten in five games, with just three goals allowed, the Dutch were a class above the opposition throughout the competition and wrapped up the title in fine style with an impressive 4-0 victory over Great Britain in Friday’s decisive game between the best two teams of the tournament. As a result, the Netherlands returns to Division IB. Relegation in 2016 in Asiago was followed by a silver medal in Korea last year at one of the preparation events for the Olympics in PyeongChang, but this time the Dutch went one better. The game against Great Britain was a clash between two nations with 100% records, but even in the early rounds of the tournament the Dutch had looked stronger. More goals scored and fewer allowed at the other end meant the Netherlands would be the favourite ahead of the gold-medal showdown. Joep Franke’s team lived up to its billing from the start. The first period was one-way traffic, with the Brits limited to just a couple of shots at Nadia Zijlstra while the Netherlands fired in 13 efforts at Nicole Jackson. Britain was fighting to stay in the game, but lost that battle in the middle frame when the Dutch scored three without reply. Captain Savine Wielenga got things started with a power-play goal shortly after the intermission before feeding Kayleigh Hamers for a rocket of a shot to make it 2-0. Britain’s best hopes of a recovery came and went with a 5-on-3 power play towards the end of the second period. The Dutch, though, not only killed the penalty but went on to kill off the game with a third goal seconds after Hamers escaped the box. Julie Zwarthoed scored, with Wielenga among the assists again, to make it 3-0 and take her to 11 points for the tournament. Another power play saw Bieke van Nes add a fourth early in the final frame, and the outcome was beyond doubt. Zwarthoed and Wielenga led the Dutch scoring with 11 and 10 points respectively, while Zijlstra’s goaltending brought her two shutouts from three starts, and just one goal allowed in the 2-1 win over Slovenia. That game was the tightest battle for the eventual champion: the other results were a 5-2 win over DPR Korea and big shutout wins against Australia and Mexico. For Britain, a silver medal was an improvement on bronze in 2017 and that gave cause for encouragement for head coach Cheryl Smith. “We have plenty to be proud of, and the program is clearly going in the right direction,” she said after the game. The tournament also marked the end of Angela Taylor’s international career after two spells on the national team totalling more than a decade brought 54 appearances and 70 points for her country. The tournament also brought a bronze medal for DPR Korea. The roster featured several players who gained Olympic experience as part of the Unified Korean team in PyeongChang in February. Un Hyang Kim, who made five Olympic appearances, was the top goalscorer with six; Hyang Mi Kim, who featured in three games in PyeongChang, led the scoring with nine points. Su Hyon Jong, who famously joined her South Korean colleague Jongah Park to carry the Olympic Torch to the cauldron during the Opening Ceremony, contributed with six assists in five games. Australia edged the Slovenian hosts for fourth place, winning 4-2 when the nations went head-to-head on Friday; Slovenia’s Pia Pren had some consolation as her two assists lifted her to 11 points and a share of the tournament scoring lead with Zwarthoed. Mexico struggled throughout the competition and was relegated after failing to win a game and scoring just three goals. Results Thread
