  1. UIPM JOINT COMMITTEES PROPOSE THREE LA28 FENCING PROPOSALS FOR TESTING Single-elimination format set to make Olympic debut in 2028 Volunteering National Federations will test formats from March-May President Schormann salutes ‘innovation and creativity’ of UIPM community The Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) has moved a step closer to finalising the Modern Pentathlon format for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. At the end of their annual joint meeting (February 16-18), UIPM’s Athletes Committee, Coaches Committee and Technical Committee decided to propose three options for the Fencing discipline to the UIPM Executive Board (EB). The Committees based their proposals on the recommendations of the Fencing Working Group appointed in November 2023. All three proposals contain a single-elimination format, meaning pentathletes will compete for the first time in the knockout structure used in many other Olympic sports – preliminary rounds, quarter-finals and semi-finals culminating in a final bout between the last two surviving fencers. The various formats will be tested by several volunteering National Federations in March, April and May. Testing results will be analysed by the EB with a view to presenting any relevant motions to UIPM 2024 Congress. The Fencing format finally selected for LA28 – if approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) – will replace the current two-venue model of a full-scale Ranking Round followed by a Bonus Round with a ladder-style elimination format. UIPM President Dr Klaus Schormann said: “After three days of invigorating discussion I am pleased that our three main UIPM committees have come together to agree on an exciting proposal for Fencing at LA28, which we know will be a game-changer for Modern Pentathlon in the Olympic Games." “Once again, we have been challenged to redefine our sport to make sure it remains a compelling part of the world’s greatest sporting event. And our community has responded with innovation and creativity, always keeping in mind the need to adjust to the needs of the IOC and the host city, in this case Los Angeles." “A single-elimination format in Fencing will be another important landmark in the evolution of Modern Pentathlon. UIPM was asked by the IOC President, Dr Thomas Bach, to reduce the cost and complexity of our sport while making it more accessible and more appealing, and this goes beyond the introduction of Obstacle as a new discipline – it applies to the overall competition format. I now look forward to our discussions within the UIPM Executive Board.”

  4. Knockout Stage Final Tuesday 20.02.2024 - Match Highlights Genève-Servette HC (SUI) - Skellefteå AIK (SWE)
  5. GENÈVE-SERVETTE WIN 2024 FINAL TO LIFT EUROPEAN TROPHY IN SWITZERLAND! GENÈVE WIN FIRST CHL TITLE FOR SWITZERLAND SAMI VATANEN: 21:26 TOI FOR GENÈVE, WINS LGT MVP AWARD FILIP SANDBERG: 4 SHOTS, 3 BLOCKED SHOTS FOR SKELLEFTEÅ Less than a year after winning their first domestic title in their 118-year history, Genève-Servette are now European Club Champions following a nail-biting 3-2 home-ice victory over Swedish club Skellefteå AIK. They become the first Swiss club to win the modern iteration of the Champions Hockey League. In anticipation of the historic moment, the sold-out crowd of 7,135 at Patinoire des Vernets was loud before the game started and had plenty to cheer about in the first period when the home team scored all of its goals. The home team opened the scoring five and a half minutes in when Eliot Berthon beat Linus Söderström on a backhand deke after Arnaud Jacquemet found him with a pass from the point. Although the net came off its moorings before the puck crossed the goal line, the goal was allowed to stand because it was the right skate of the goalie that kicked the post out of place. Skellefteå tied it off the rush six minutes later when Pär Lindholm fed Martins Dzierkals, and the Latvian beat Jussi Olkinuora high to the short side from the left wing. But late in the opening frame, Genève scored twice on the same powerplay to take a two-goal lead. First it was Sakari Manninen one-timing a cross-ice pass from fellow countryman Teemu Hartikainen before the goalie could slide across to make it 2-1. Skellefteå challenged the play for offside on the zone entry, but the goal was upheld. Then 59 seconds later, veteran Daniel Winnik put a very nice deflection on Tim Berni’s knee-high shot from the point to make it 3-1. There wasn’t a lot of offence in the second period, in which Skellefteå held a 13-8 edge in shots and received the period’s only two powerplays. The visitors from northern Sweden put on probably their best pressure of the first 40 minutes in the late going after a Genève bench-minor for too many players on the ice. That Skellefteå pressure carried over into the third period and they eventually drew closer. With just under 11 minutes to play, they scored their second of the game off the rush. Anton Heikkinen took a drop pass from Oscar Lindberg in the neutral zone, carried the puck to the high slot and scored on a high wrister. Against the run of play with under eight minutes left, Manninen had a chance to regain Genève’s two-goal cushion on a partial breakaway but made a curious behind-the-back pass that failed to reach its intended recipient. With 3:12 to play, Triple Gold Club member Valtteri Filppula was called for tripping but Genève got a golden shorthanded chance to put the game away when goalie Söderström lost his stick pursuing the puck in the corner. With 2:01 to play, Skellefteå called their timeout and pulled Söderström for a 6-on-4 advantage, but although they were able to generate a couple of shots on Olkinuora, the equalizing goal never came. Genève made a couple of long-distance bids at the empty net which failed to connect, but managed to kill the remaining seconds and preserve the European Trophy. Post-game Interviews

  7. because their gender equality doesn't reflect the true disparity existing between men and women, who are NOT equal for a (good) reason in particular, the "gender equality" might be a good thing if we think of equal rights, equal access to the sport, even if they want the Olympic sports to have both men and women's competitions but all the mixed gender events and, above all, the fact that men and women must have the same quota places and the same number of events in any single sport is absolutely fool if there are 10 million male pro athletes and 100 competitive Nations in a sport and 10k pro athletes and 7/8 competitive Nations among the women in the same sport, why should they have the same treatment? things must be balanced and compared to the actual presence of competitive athletes (and I'm talking of long term history and perspective, not of a temporary conjuncture)
  8. I don't really like (in Italian perspective) Takayama replacing Hamada in the women's -78kg...she might be a lot more dangerous to Bellandi than Hamada (who basically never won against our star)
  9. I do really love that woman! these are the only lines on this question that make sense I just can't stand anymore those *choose your favourite definition* that try and ruin all the sports without knowing anything about them stop IOC, stop Bach, stop "agenda 2020", stop "gender equality", stop the TV networks...stop all those idiots and all this bullshit!!!

  13. well, there's no logical explanation...they just decided to eliminate OTs p.s. being serious, the official explanation is that FINA wanted to keep all games in the usual "time windows" to please the TV networks and their written in stone schedules

  18. because FINA and IOC didn't want to have anymore amazing, spectacular, unforgettable games like vs (1986 world champs final and 1987 Universiade final) and vs (1992 Olympic Games Gold Medal match)
  19. in this case, we're on the other side of the bracket...not so demanding group, but deadly quarterfinal assured once again (hopefully not vs please)
  20. sentenced to 4th in their group at best, which means a quarterfinal pairing most likely against not gonna waste any time watching that bunch of losers
