  1. Sad. Well, now we root for her to get to the final so Wiebe can try for bronze. That's how it works, right? I got confused in judo.
  2. In a Canadian context. Edit: Meaning, dominating Canadian swimming.
  3. Pickrem did her best, not going to complain. But Canada was faster than the Americans in every leg except breast, and faster in back and butterfly than Aus, just behind in free. Hopefully Team Canada works on that before Paris.
  4. Penny has 7 medals, in 3 different individual events and 3 different relays. She could be even more dominant in Paris.
  5. Third medal for MacNeil, 4th for Masse. Pickrem gets her first.
  6. Meanwhile there's a good chance that the basketball ladies will not make the quarters at all.
  7. Yes, the worst Canada can do is 4th in their group. Right now they are 3rd and losing to Poland (expected) and if Japan beats Iran they'll move ahead of them so Canada finishes 4th. If Iran wins they'll be tied with Canada for 3rd, but I believe the tie-breaker is head-to-head and Canada won that match up so they'd finish 3rd. Either way the quarterfinal will be a very tough match up.
  8. I completely agree. My only gripe is that Canada should always be at their current level in swimming and athletics (~4-6 medals each). And the men should be stronger at swimming. We went through a terrible drought in both for 20+ years, and for a country like us, that's not acceptable. Surely we have the talent. It comes down to development and training. And after the success of the 90s, it was sad to see such a decline in Canadian rowing since. A gold this year was amazing.
  9. Looking at the schedule, tomorrow could be a huge day for Canada! I better get to bed.
  10. This is very true, and it's the same reason why we rarely, if ever, see multiple Canadians on a podium in the SOG, and have never swept a podium in either SOG or WOG. The closest would be freestyle skiing, with a near sweep in 2014 in mens moguls, although some might argue without the East Germans doping Canadian swimmers might have seen it in the 70s. Can we name an individual event at the SOG that Canadians are historically good at? The Koreans have archery, the Chinese diving and table tennis, the Romanians gymnastics and rowing, hell even Fiji has rugby now. I'd say the closest is trampoline, but that's coming to an end now that the Chinese will take over (and make the sport boring). Having said that, one of the great things about Canadian sport is that there are always a diverse field at the Olympics. At the WOG I believe Canada holds the record for winning in the most events at a single Games. And for the SOG we always get lots at different kinds of sports. Still, that indicates that it's more about pure talent winning through more than a comprehensive system developing talent. Anyway, I'll leave it up to the experts. I'm not complaining, I'm just thinking. I'm on vacation and few drinks in, haha.
  11. My Aussie friend just texted me that they should have copper medals for 4th, then Canada would lead the way. I said then we'd just have a whole bunch of 5ths.
  12. When you have more 4ths than medals, there's a conversation to be had about finishing as a nation. This isn't the first time. I think from 200-2012 Canada by far, by very far, led the way in 4ths in every Olympics (SOG + WOG). This is not an attack on any individual athlete. Also, this doesn't count non-4ths but losing bronzes in combat sports, which would put it much higher. And we're not even done yet. Anyway, good job to everyone. I'm nowhere near the Olympics so screw me.
  13. Another 4th for Canada! Our favourite position! By 1KG. Heartbreaking.
  14. Yup, another 4th. By 1kg. I cannot watch Canadian sports anymore, haha. It's just too heartbreaking.
  15. It's going to be another 4th... FFS.
  16. Looking at numbers, Boady will need a significant PB in the next round to make the podium. His PB is 210, but it'll likely take high teens at least to make it up there.
  17. Boady into the lead after the snatch! Edit: Spoke too soon, there's one more lifter... Edit2: BOADY INTO THE LEAD AFTER THE SNATCH!
  18. De Grasse matching his PB with a nice jog the last 20m.
  19. De Grasse ties his PB without even trying, it looked like. He looked over and slowed down towards the end.
  20. They need some PR people, because I was thoroughly entertained watching it the other night as I said. I thought it was like high jump where weights keep going up and the competitors lift it to move on. But no, they only get the three lifts and it's so strategic and suspenseful. Really cool.
  21. Too much doping, I guess. But also not one of the sexy events, even if it's truly Faster Higher Stronger. It's also an event that has athletes from areas that aren't as represented at the Olympics, particularly Central and SE Asia.
  22. Really looking forward to tuning in to see Santavy in an hour. I watched weightlifting the other night for the first time to see Charron win gold and I found the whole thing very captivating. Not at all what I expected. Full of drama and strategy and emotions. Super entertaining.
