  1. a) Don’t quite understand why we need 4 medal events for basketball. b) Don’t quite understand why this is an Olympic event while futsal/beach soccer isn’t. c) I guess the fact that the Netherlands won a medal shows that this hasn’t much to do with normal basketball.
  2. If Milak counts as a superstar, then you might as well count Douglass and Finke (and maybe Smith). I also think that in the past superstars like Phelps took a lot of pressure off the other swimmers, which made it easier for them to perform.
  3. I think we might get a different picture in 2028. It wasn’t shocking to see non-European nations somewhat underperform (in a completely different time zone). The U.S. will for sure need to find new stars. I think Dressel and Ledecky will combine for 1 gold at the most in 2028.
  4. Imagine how dominant McIntosh would be with doping … The Chinese are doped to the gills and still can’t even come close to her … a true miracle.
  5. a) When you can „legally“ swallow half a pharmacy thanks to TUEs, you don’t have to take illegal drugs to enhance your performance. b) The way Shayna Jack was treated/welcomed back by her teammates tells you all you need to know about how widespread/normal doping is among teams like Australia. c) The Chinese swimmers were cleared. If you don’t agree with the decision, you should direct your anger at the organization that cleared them and maybe consider a boycott. d) How is the U.S. with 300 million people winning 30 medals without doping, while China with 1500 million people barely wins 10 medals with doping? How is Australia with 1.8 % of the Chinese population and without doping winning twice as many medals as China with all its doped athletes? Are all their (foreign world-class) coaches complete retards or are the Chinese just genetically inferior (swimmers)? Bonus question: It is widely known that the GDR had widespread doping. Why did they dominate on the women’s side while barely winning any medals on the men’s side? Are there any nations that currently show a similar pattern (tons of medals on the women’s side while barely winning anything on the men’s side)?

  13. Nemour was insanely overscored. Without her backstory she never would have gotten an E score of 8.5. She seems to be the female Epke Zonderland, I am sure that this silly trend of flying around as much as possible while having an extremely bad execution won’t last. Otherwise they should just call it Cirque du Soleil. Edit: Obviously she also has a huge advantage thanks to her height. It is much easier to switch from one bar to the other when you are that tall.

  15. Overall good results for Germany. The first 5 days were very good, the last 4 days rather abysmal. Could have been 4-6 top 8 finishes more. 17 top 8 finishes is still more than at the last two Olympics combined (15). There are still huge holes in this team, especially on the women’s side. Hopefully the team will continue on this path, although it will be more difficult to perform outside of Europe. My dream would be to have at least one competitive athlete in every event, but at the moment that doesn’t seem realistic. It would be a welcome surprise to see someone qualify in men’s 200 breast/men’s 200 fly/men‘s 200 IM/women‘s 50 free/women‘s 100 free/women‘s 100 breast/women‘s 200 breast/women‘s 200 fly/women‘s 100 back/women‘s 200 back/women‘s 200 IM/women‘s 400 IM.
  16. a) Australia is the favorite in women’s medley relay? I think the U.S. is the favorite. b) France is the favorite in men’s medley relay? I think the U.S. is the favorite there as well, but France could fight for a medal.

Surprisingly a historic performance by Helen Kevric in multiple ways: a) First 16 year old to finish in the top 8 in the all-around since 2008 (the year she was born) b) Best result for Germany since 1988, if you include GDR athletes c) Best result for Germany since 1964, if you don’t include GDR athletes d) Second best European athlete Too bad she didn’t score 0.2 points more to finish 6th. Obviously Germany never had a talent like her, hopefully she continues on her path without injuries.
  20. Obviously the problem isn’t his performance, but your expectations. He has never done anything to give the impression that he could medal. I wouldn’t have been shocked to see him medal, but anyone who expected him to medal is obviously delusional. The bigger question is why he didn’t focus on the 100 free instead. He has a lot of options concerning the 2028 Olympics. He could add the 100 free/100 fly/200 IM to his program or stick with the 200 back. Italy has promising talents in men’s 200 free, so if Ceccon could get to sub 1:46, their relay might be a medal contender in 2028. Right now it looks as if his best option would be to stick with the 100/200 back and also try to qualify for the two free relays. 5 medals (3 relays, 100 back, 200 back) seem possible, which would probably make him the most decorated Italian Olympian ever?

  22. I just looked at the schedule and I don’t quite understand why she dropped out. In my opinion there would have been more than enough time to recover for her individual event, especially since she can easily get out of heats at 80 % if she is anywhere near her best. Maybe she could have helped them to qualify for the final before deciding to skip it. Her teammates might feel as if she robbed them of a chance to compete in a final. The other Irish runners don’t seem to be good enough to make an individual final. If she ends up winning the 400 m gold, it will probably all be forgotten.
