Perhaps they feel the IOC won't remove them Ignoring internal politics from sport federations and only taking into account the number of nations which compete regularly weightlifting is quite widespread. Not athletics/basketball/football widespread, but well above many less inclusive sports so they think the IOC is bluffing. The IOC being relatively lenient over the years probably makes them more confident. Even in the worst case scenario where the IOC does kick them out and they finally clean house the sport will be welcomed back by the next Olympics so there is little long term concern for the current management to push the edge. If this was modern pentathlon behaving this way, they would have been kicked out long ago and possibly never return.

The good news is weightlifting doesn't have a lot of depth. Only 16 nations competed at the 2021 championships and some only competed with 1 or 2 athletes. Assuming we send our B-team and rack up points (low is better than none) we should be able to have a team of 3 men and 3 women with maybe an outside chance for a fourth woman since Cuba didn't participate at all.

Here's a summary for weightlifting qualification (in Spanish) Basically they are using the combined team scores from the 2021 and 2022 Pan American Championships and awarding quotas based on nation rankings.

Everyone seems to be keeping quiet. Not sure if the IOC is putting an embargo on the information or if one of the sports has a controversial qualification pathway and needs to be redone. Usually the first events will be in summer, but every now and then we do see someone start extra early.

The men have also qualified to the World Aquatics Championships (women were already qualified). Though it looks like Argentina is starting to become a major player in our continent after just barely losing to Canada and Brazil

Now boxing/diving makes sense. Still it's weird seeing qualifying to the Commonwealth Games being harder than the Olympics.

I was quite nervous about going to OT until that shot was made, bronze for Canada.

In terms of total medals this is our second best ever result. We probably won't pass our 28 medal performance from 2018. By my count I think we'll finish with 26, so it'll be close.

Then I suspect we will be sending more than six athletes in those two sports. The minimum for diving is 4 and that's with all athletes competing in all the individual and synchro events, that's just asking too much of them, realistically we would need 7-8 for a full diving team.

Those times/distances are quite high, we may not even get 31 athletes to fill those quotas. I have a feeling we may not compete in either diving or boxing. It's hard to see us compete in both with six total athletes. Even with six athletes in diving we will be leaving at least one medal behind...

One more win in curling to guarantee our spot in the semis, if not we'll have to hope results go our way.

Bad couple of days for our curling team, going from 4-0 to 4-3. We can only afford to lose 1 more game (in some scenarios we may have to win all three remaining games)

Nothing too unexpected. There's a rule that at least three nations must compete for the event to be valid (this might happen in some events), additionally for the mixed events, the crews must be mixed (so no single gender crews qualifying quotas). Hopefully the other sports publish their qualification pathway soon.
