clemsonbeav reacted to Grassmarket in Luge FIL World Cup 2025 - 2026
Bump for the Luge World Cup starting this weekend, starting at Winterberg rather than Igls for technical reasons (lazy Austrians ). Since we are now going to Winterberg twice this season, this particular weekend will not count towards Olympic Quals, as discussed already,
There has been some changes for us oldsters, so maybe a guide for beginners as well.
Broadcasting
Good and perhaps not so good news. There is a new deal with Discovery/Eurosport. All three days of the weekend are now being covered including the Friday races which usually are not shown. Unfortunately, not clear whether the FTA option via YouTube and/or the FIL Page will still exist, or will be geo-blocked. Hopefully also they will stick with the excellent commentary format of one pro comms person on-site paired with a willing volunteer from the non-competing athletes.
Race formats
There are four sets of races now.
Nations Cup on Friday - the Qualifying races for the Saturday / Sunday World Cup. Top sleds are pre-qualified so don't take part here.
Mixed Races on Friday - These races are for the smaller nations who don't have large enough teams to participate in the Team Relays. Nations can either compete as a pair or as single nation partnerships along the lines of old historic friendships like /, /, /, / etc.
World Cup Races on Saturday and Sunday - The standard four formats of Men's Singles, Women's Singles, Men's Doubles, Women's Doubles
Team Relay on Sunday - Always exciting relays races in which the big nations run one team from each of the WC formats. Unlike every other form of Winter Sports team event, this is the one in which it is quite normal for even the biggest and best teams to seriously mess up & either disqualify themselves or have some kind of significant time delay.
Sprint races - Everyone hates them so hopefully they have been killed.
Beer
The race track at Winterberg is sponsored by a brewery and in the past winners have been given very large glasses of the product! Unfortunately, this is the alcohol-free version of the beer.

Still think there is a win in there this season.

clemsonbeav got a reaction from dcmdtruefan in Summer Olympic Games Los Angeles 2028 Qualification Calendar
This question isn't directly related to qualifying for LA28, but is mostly to help me wrap my mind around each sport federation's calendar.
I think all Winter Sports straddle two different years (i.e. seasons start in 2025 and finish in 2026). Most Summer Sports have their annual season in one calendar year (like Sport Climbing has its annual World Cup that starts around April and finishes around October of each year). But some sports are different. Squash has its start of each season in around August and it finishes the next calendar year.
Are there other Summer sports like Squash that have their season with a similar calendar, straddling two different years?
Sports that I'm already aware of that do this
Squash
Softball
Rugby Sevens
Fencing
Others?

Thank you. Yes, sorry, my original list could have been clearer (fixing it now). That list was a list of sports I already knew had a season that straddled two years. I was wondering if there were others that I hadn't listed.

I think some of the FEI World Cups straddle 2 years. The 2025/26 Show Jumping World Cup final will be taking place in April next year in Fort Worth

clemsonbeav got a reaction from avlar in Cross-Country Skiing FIS World Cup 2025 - 2026
To those who know more about CC Skiing: Back in Post 2, I'm only compiling results from disciplines that will be in the Olympics (to preview perhaps the podiums there). However, I note that for each event, there are 'classic' and 'freestyle'. This past weekend in Ruka, they skiied the 10km interval start Classic; however, in Milano Cortina, it will be the 10km interval start Free. Would there be a benefit to tracking the disciplines that won't be contested? (i.e. Do different skiiers excel in one vs. the other?)
Also, of note, only once will the 50km skiathlon be contested before MiCo.

I do (not) love how in the medal table, though the last 5 nations haven't medalled, they still list them as being in 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17 (and not even in alphabetical order). Sorry !

And the Germans take all 4 gold medals. The USA nabbed three medals, and and each nabbed one bronze.

clemsonbeav got a reaction from Topicmaster1010 in Curling Discussion | Qualification to Winter Olympic Games Milano Cortina 2026
For the first time in 20 years, John Shuster will not be representing the in curling. His team lost the US Olympic Trials last night against Team Casper, made up of younger men who watched Shuster as they grew up. It was a Best of 3 series, and apparently Team Shuster had a habit of losing Game 1...but this time, after losing Game 1 and winning Game 2, the magic finally wore off. Hopefully Team Casper will be able to snag one of the two spots remaining at the OQE coming soon!
(Had Shuster won the trials, and had the US qualified, then he would be the sole curler to have competed in 6 Olympics..instead, he's tied with one other curler at 5.)

Rugby should not start this early, regardless. Nobody should be eliminated from medal contention before the opening ceremony, and yet most rugby teams were/will be.

clemsonbeav reacted to Grassmarket in Luge Discussion | Qualification to Winter Olympic Games Milano Cortina 2026
Late changes to the Luge Calendar. The Igls event has been moved to Winterberg - there has been rebuilding work at Igls and the Luge people were not happy. Bobsleigh/skeleton OTOH are fine with it.
The test event at Cortina in two weeks time has been upgraded to one of the races counting in the Olympic Qualifier series.
Olympic Test Event in Cortina upgraded: First qualifying race for Mila

It’s also worth noting that times at the SLC track aren’t very indicative, as its altitude and ice conditions make it extremely fast
