My 2 cents...

teams you might have overestimated: Calgary, Winnipeg, Nashville, NY Islanders

teams you might have underestimated: LA Kings (I hope, here I'm really biased :p), Pittsburgh, Florida, Ottawa

actually, Florida must have a great season because I just drafted a lot of their players, starting with Matt Tkachuk and the 2 between the pipes :yikes:

I agree that Calgary, Winnipeg and Islanders are all teams that could miss the playoffs and it wouldn't be a huge surprise. Nashville getting just outside the playoffs wouldn't be too much of a suprise. Though the possible ranking of becoming 6th in West would be a slight surprise. I see Nashville bottom being 11th in the ranks and that could be a more likely scenario than seing them grab a playoff spot.

Kings was a really difficult teams to place as I do believe they will get in the playoff safely despite only being 8th in my ranking. I think Kings could upset one of the top-seeded teams in the first round, as I don't believe Kings will be in the top 4 after the regular season are over. Kings together with Seattle are the two teams the presumed top 4 teams in the West fear the most facing in the Playoff.

My thoughts on Ottawa is split, as seen from having one of the widest margin I have for any team. Predicting they could end up from 7-12. Ottawa is really a team I hope the best for this season and I can read that others have hope for them too. Ottawa and Buffalo are two teams I need to see they can make the playoffs before I truly believe in them. I believe more in Buffalo this season, but Buffalo is a team that has so much talent and potential in their roster that is just waiting to reach their peek. I don't think this will be season for the Sabres, but next year could be more likely, as I believe Tampa's level will go down next season and Islanders I have my doubts about.

If I would make a tier ranking for teams and their chances of making the playoffs, it would look like this:

West:

Tier 1: Playoff team. Disappointment if they missed the playoffs

Dallas, Edmonton, Colorado and Vegas

Tier 2: Playoff team. Should make the playoff. Not a failure if they miss it

Minnesota and LA Kings

Tier 3: Team in Playoff contention

Winnipeg, Calgary, Nashville, Seattle and Vancouver.

Tier 4: No chance of Playoff.

St. Louis and Arizona

Tier 5: Lottery/tanking teams

Anaheim, Chicago and San Jose

East:

Tier 1: Playoff team. Disappointment if they missed the playoffs

Carolina, New Jersey, Toronto, NY Rangers and Boston

Tier 2: Playoff team. Should make the playoff. Not a failure if they miss it

Tampa Bay and Florida

Tier 3: Team in Playoff contention

NY Islanders, Pittsburgh, Buffalo, Ottawa, Washington and Detroit

Tier 4: No chance of Playoff

Columbus and Montreal

Tier 5: Lottery/tanking teams

Philadelphia

San Jose did not exactly returned from their last trip in huge form I assume here

image.png

With a record of 0-10 and only 1 single point from OT/PSO defeat with Colorado the Sharks are clearly heading for the worst start of the season of the league history, NYR in 1943/44 did not win first 15 games (but there were also draws at that time), 5 times a team lost all first 11 matches including the other clown of the league Arizona doing it twice...

Was about time !

Last year´s NHL Draft pick #2 Šimon Nemec finally debuted last night in the NHL !  and it was a 2 Assists debut :)

Which btw is the all time new :SVK record. 2 points in a debut is more than what achieved Mikita, Pálffy, Bondra, Peter Šťastný or Hossa  at the age of 19 years, 9 months and 16 Days, Also became only the second Slovak defencer with point in his NHL debut in history.

Well done Šimon.

96th Slovak to play in the NHL a match.  we are so close of the hundred now, imagine that for a small 5 million inhabitants country though

My Vancouver Canucks improve to 17-9-1, after a 2-0 (1Q 1:55 ‘Höglander, 3Q 17:55 ‘Blueger) shutout over the Minnesota Wild! :yes

Casey. Fucking. DeSmith. 26 save effort by him (including 10 in the 1Q, where we were severely outplayed but still managed to go up 1-0) and his first shutout as a Canuck!

Canucks fans haven’t had the greatest (and that’s putting it lightly) last few years (aka 10 or so :p), so it’s great to see them finally getting it together. But I’ll be taking it game by game, there’s a long way to go in the season and there’s still a chance the Canucks could implode.

I completely forgot to mention that, but another unbelievable historic moment for Slovak hockey happened in the NHL.

Juraj Slafkovský and Šimon Nemec both started their respective game in their teams First lines on the same night. Both are 19 years old aand it happened less than 520 days from their draft. That is another quite a historic stuff you not see often

Slafkovsky also scored the game winning shootout goal to give the Montreal Canadiens a 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres!

    • For Modern Pentathlon, it's interesting that Africa only gets one continental championship spot, considering how well Egypt does in the event.  (But then again, it's max 2 athletes per NOC per gender.)  Presuming that an Egyptian wins the African CCh, I suppose their performance in the other major competitions will allow the second competitor to come through.
    • Statement from the president of the russian Luge federation (yesterday): "Our team is in Kazakhstan and is preparing to apply for U.S. visas. We are setting an example for our entire country, especially for the younger generation. They see that a difficult path is not a reason to give up. It teaches perseverance. In this perseverance lies our shared strength, our mission to millions of young people for whom sports are a guiding point and a shining star. I believe in our country, in our strong-spirited guys. I sincerely love and respect our president, Vladimir Putin. He is the best president in the world. May God grant him strength and good health."   Do they deserve neutral status?
    • I did not think it would happen again but... I created similar post for Paris - 2024 https://totallympics.com/forums/topic/27489-ain-athletes-qualification-for-paris-2024-olympic-games-and-reallocation-of-quotas-post1-updated-1507/#comments  I was not sure if that reallocations would really happen but the reality was even more serious than the expectations. According to this research 43% of the neutral statuses issued by the IFs were fake AIN  - https://razom22.com/neutrality-research/  And the figures are based on the IOC decisions - not on the evaluations by Ukrainian NOC or sport ministry. Right now the situation is absolutely unclear. As usually )) Some notes: 1. Russians will not reject quotas for 2026 as they did for 2024 in judo and wrestling. 2. AINERP may be more loyal to russians due to the new member - Watanabe. His federation issued AIN status to Melnikova who took part in the primaries of the russian ruling party, had phots with Z and e .t.c. 3. I do not expect a lot of reallocations becaues of the total small number of the rus/blr athletes in qualification events right now. 4. BUT, even with these small numbers we see that FIS allowed to compete several incompliant persons.        Short notes from the IOC statement before Paris - 2024:   1. IOC`s decisions to reject quotas are final. 2. IOC`s decisions to approve quotas are not final - new facts may lead to the rejection of invitation. 3. IOC`s decisions cannot be appealed - NOCs were not invited to the Games, so it is a good will to invite individual athletes... or not   russians Sports Athlete(s) Discipline Possible Reallocation NOC IOC Decision + IF reallocation if happened Figure skating Adeliia PETROSIAN Women's singles Stefania Yakovleva Confirmed by IOC Figure skating Petr GUMENNIK Men's singles Davide Lewton Brain Confirmed by IOC belorussians     Sports Athlete(s) Discipline Possible Reallocation NOC IOC Decision + IF reallocation if happened Figure skating Viktoriya SAFONOVA Women's singles Stefania Yakovleva Confirmed by IOC
    • I would say they will not be eligible. But it realy abotut the wording every federation has in its papers. World Aquatics changes their policies several times (especially after Mazepin "solved the issues" persoanlly - as witnessed one russian Olympic champion)   Inoirtnat notes on FIS decisions:   FIS points are frozen for ruissns and belorussians - so the situation is not so complicated for a lot of them. The list of the AIN`s is not final as the list from ISU was. It means that persons mau be not only removed from the list but added as well. I expect russians to try some freestyle applications before the stage in China, for example. FIS has not problems with the deny of visa or entris by the host countries. So they kept the possibility to close the doors for the russians for all the countries as ICF did. No sanctions for this, no removing events from the Olympic qualification list, no host changes,   * * * * * Here is the the relevant extract from FIS papers for Aerials tram event. What do you think?
    • Not only Korostelev but all 3 russian entries. I will bring the detail
    • And will bet that the IBU is a lot richer than the FIS because their wealth is based on German TV contracts.
    • Russians filed an appeal to CAS against IBU. But I do not believe they will get any result in time to grab quotas. I suppose IBU will not agree to have "fast" hearings as FIS did. And i suppose IBU will fight in CAS without intention to lose as FIS did.
    • hmm - aren't Australia and New Zealand the only nations that actually compete in the Oceania Cup?
    • If Australia and New Zealand earn quotas through Pro League, then does that mean 3rd placed team from Oceania Cup takes quota?
