Shane Ryan just dropped a 21.82 NR and OST at the Europeans in the 50 Free, although it's not a designated qualification event by Swim Ireland. They need lads to make up a relay team and Ryan is good in the backstroke too, so will they make an exception here?

They’ve said they’ll accept invitations (unlike Tokyo when they said they wouldn’t, then had to for the relay to get in)

 

I think they will, and they should. People would ask questions if they’d sen Tom Fannon but not Ryan when Ryan has gone faster

Common sense says they will. Especially, if they are willing to accept athletes who get the invite via an OCT then it would make no sense in this case to deny an athlete who swam an OQT and especially with all things considered with the relay qualifications. However, they did outline their selection policy in advance so it’s not a certainty.

Their policy for Tokyo was ridiculous. Ellen Walshe swam the OQT at the trials and they initially refused to call her up because she wasn’t part of the national squad

 

Ryan being part of the “NAC” might help him here as none of them have got the standard. Walshe and Hill still with club teams. Fannon and Wiffen in UK. Mona in Tennessee. 
 

It’s fine to try and out structure on worlds and having a trials event but who are we to refuse an Olympic place for a standard earned during a European championship?!

I’m not actually sure on Fannon. He might have had to move to Dublin

Absolute nonsense from Swim Ireland again. Something like this was inevitable as soon as they announced their stupidly limited selection criteria. When will Irish sporting bodies ever learn, we had it with Diver in athletics and lost her as a result, now it's happening repeatedly in swimming, where we're not exactly flush with talent.

 

Keep it simple - if you're Irish and you run, swim or achieve whatever target you need to get to the Olympics before the international cutoff date, you get to go. In the very rare case where we qualify more competitors than we're allowed to enter you need some kind of selection criteria, but otherwise just leave it be.

Mona McSharry made the 200m breaststroke in Canada. 
Swim Ireland on Twitter saying they’ll allow her compete in it because already had the 100m OQT. Not sure if this is a sign of bad news for Ryan.

I'd say more of a sign of good news if anything as if her 200m breaststroke OST is valid then so should his in the 50m Free? Probably could have done with doing better than 8th in final but he beat the time twice in heats and semis so his case is strong and there's nobody else has got OST outside of designated qualification meets either so wouldn't open a can of worms for Swim Ireland on that front
