Women's Ice Hockey IIHF Under 18 Division I Group A World Championship 2020

 

Tournament Format

 

After Disqualification of Russia from this year IIHF World Championships Program, the IIHF decided to replace them in this tournament with Slovakia (Originally Relegated)

 

The 8 Participating teams are divided into two,

four-team groups A & B in the Preliminary Round with the top-four seeded teams in Group A and the others in Group B.

After a single round-robin series in each group, the all four teams from Group A and the best two teams from Group B advance to the Playoff Round while the third- and fourth-placed team in Group B will play a best-of-three relegation round series.

The two top-seeded teams from Group A will receive Quarter-Final Round bye thus moving automatically to the Semi-Finals. The Quarter-Finals will be played between 3A-2B and 4A-1B. If qualified, host Sweden will play the early Quarter-Final game. The winner of each Quarter-Final moves onto the Semi-Finals.

In the semi-finals the best-ranked team - criteria: 1) Tier of the group. 2) placement in the group - will play against the lowest-ranked semi-finalist. The 2nd-best ranked semi-finalist will play the 3rd-best ranked semi-finalist. If qualified, host Sweden will play the late semi-final.

The winner of each Semi-Final game will move onto the Gold Medal Game, while the losers will play in the Bronze Medal Game.

Relegation format

The two last-placed teams play a best-of-three Relegation Round series. The third game is only played if needed. The winner of the series plays again at the 2022 IIHF Ice Hockey U18 Women's World Championship, while the loser will be relegated to the Next Year Women's Under 18 Division I Group A 2023.
