Triathlon Qualification to Summer Olympic Games Paris 2024

Paris Test Event

 

1.)  Beth Potter

2.)  Cassandre Beaugrand

3.)  Laura Lindemann

 

Beth Potter now needs a podium finish at the WTCS Championship Final at Pontevedra to confirm her place on Team GB

 

Beaugrand also met the first criteria for selection to French team - I think she now needs a top 6 at Olympic distance WTCS event next year to confirm her spot on the team. 

 

Laura Lindemann and Nina Eim should both be selected for German team given they both achieved top 8 finish.

A golden double for  after Alex Yee wins the test event 

 

Barclay Izzard seems to have found some decent form and finished in 17th place - it could have/should have been higher but he had to serve a 15 second penalty because of a swimming infraction but Jonathan Brownlee could only manage a disappointing 51st  (out of 55 starters).

 

It's looking increasingly likely that Brownlee is going to miss out on his 4th Olympic games after his poor run of results continued. He's dropped another 5 places in the latest rankings to now sit in 37th whereas Izzard has steadily been climbing the rankings over the last few weeks. He now sits at 43rd.

If you are a decent but not spectacular pro like Izzard is, this may be an astonishing opportunity to get an Olympic medal, because all things being equal, you're going to have Yee, Potter, and Taylor-Brown/Coldwell to pull back any losses you make in the sprint relay, and even if they don't win, they're likely to be in the mix for a medal.

 

Brownlee, like his brother, seems sadly to have simply run out of wheels. An astonishing career in his own right, but he only looks headed in one direction, sadly.

 

Yee, if fit, has to be favourite now for Paris. Potter is in a small group of favourites, but much will depend on the fitness and attendance of Taylor Brown and Duffy. Taking out Beaugrand in her home event on her home course, however, is a massive mental win for Beth, and affirms again that Cassandre, fabulous athlete though she is, remains vulnerable over the full Olympic distance when placed against a strong runner - which Potter, GTB and Duffy all are.

I would add one caveat.

 

Brownlee is a gifted sprint and super sprint triathlete. I'm not sure Izzard is. If they have a choice, Team GB may gamble that neither Izzard nor Brownlee are doing anything big in the individual, but Brownlee is a safer bet in, say, the first leg of the relay, where his strongish swim can prevent other teams opening up a big gap that's hard to bridge - much as Learmonth did in Tokyo. If he doesn't pull much on the bike, just following wheels, he may reach the run fresh enough to hold on and put the first woman in better position than Izzard would.

It's a tough one - Brownlee is a more accomplished individual athlete but Izzard is probably more of a team player in so much as he would be willing to play the part of domestique in the event that Yee has a poor swim leg. It will be interesting to see which squad is used in the test relay event on Sunday.

 

Ultimately I think Brownlee's body has let him down this year and he has been nursing a series of niggles and injuries that have limited his participation and impacted his results. He decided to pass on the Sunderland WTCS in favour of focusing on the Paris test event and that just hasn't paid off for him. He genuinely believed he could finish top 3 and secure nomination for GB squad whereas Izzard has looked to bank as many points as possible - a tactic that seems to be paying off. 

 

Both Brownlee and Izzard have the solution to the problem in their own hands - chase the points necessary to get themselves both in to the top 30 so that GB secures a third individual quota place - each is sitting on 4 events during the second period with Izzard banking over 1000 points whilst Brownlee is on around 750. Izzard is down to do a World Cup level event before the WTCS final but don't see anything on the Brownlee schedule as yet.
