There is a large part of the world that doesn't give a f. about basketball. None of these guys are more well_known outside of the US than Bolt, Phelps or Djokovic.

And please, only 15 yo girls are actually "dreaming" of seeing nba players.

And Parts of the world dont care about soccer and couldn't care less if they stand next to messi, while the other side only accepts the name football for it and while i would love to shake Peyton Manning's hand, someone else couldn't care less about it. Big parts of the world only accept Athletics, Swimming, Gymanstics every 4th year.  Different countries have different interests. Just listen to a podcast with Nastia Liukin few days ago where she said that in Beijing when she was already pretty big household name in USA she was afraid to approach Dirk Nowitzki!!

Look in China during Beijing 2008 where it was a festival every time Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard went sightseeing. I can tell you that in Israel there is a huge love for NBA, and probably in a lot of other countries. Some people might not like it sure, but i believe larger part will.

And also look at Opening Ceremonies of the past since NBA players joined. They are ganged up by the same Americans every time, Just last time i remember selfies from everywhere with Kobe. And i'm guessing this year will not be different even if Lebron, Kobe, Steph or Westbrook stayed home.

In the olympics nba players are the biggest every day stars.   Even to most Olympians seeing kevin durant.  Carmelo Anthony will be something they often just dream of.  Even without kobe.  Lebron.  Steph.  They are still the biggest celebrities along with a very select few.  Bolt.  Phelps.  Djokovic.

Well I think there's always countries who announce it at the last moment. Like the Netherlands, our flagbearer is usually announced 1-2 days before the opening/closing ceremony :)

Have a feeling it will be one out of bernard lagat.  Kim Rhode or Michael Phelps

Nbc doing it here and for the most part its awesome because they show literally everything live except maybe ceremony.  Most events are also available on demand right after.  However the big issue is that the main sports sometimes are not available for on demand until after the primetime broadcast in the evening.   So any country offering immediate playback features for every event that i can get through a vpn

they show the stars only  like if the rest of the  athletes have nothing to do in the OG

maybe they forgot that most of these celebrities   are doped

this clip is totally segregating  and crap

Nbc is all about the big names.  During the trials the focus was only on big names.  Phelps.  Lochte.  Franklin.  Ledecke.  Biles.  Raisman.  Gatlin.  Felix.   Etc

It would be the only second football player in olympic history to lights the flame if I´m not wrong, since Michel Platini in Albertville 1992

well Football is not really a very big Olympic sport, however i dont believe there is any brazillian athlete bigger then him (i just hope they wont go the london route and let 5 kids to light the couldron , which did nothing because most of them went to college and are done with sport)

thanks, in normal ocations is more dificult qualifing that the olympcis itself: silver in 1996, gold in 2004 and 2008, but in this strange case i dont know, we have a coach (not a good one but at least we have), in this moment the problem are having enough good players to participate.

i remember 96 so well.... was always a big supporter of the Argentinian football team, and that final against nigeria..... ouch that hurt me for years later

our president of the NOC says: minimum 6 medals, we have 4 in London.......for me is near to an utopia thinking in that minimum, i will be glad if our country win 6 medals, at least one gold.

i thought like every olympics that you will win football, even without messi, until the problems started

Maybe not to Europeans...

Anyway, Israel is probably right at the borderline for what this project was designed for. They'll probably have around 40 athletes and while winning a medal is possible they aren't heavy favourites (women's -63kg in judo I think is their most likely medal)

Ill say right now its women 63 and men 100+  with Or Sasoon in great shape.  Also womens wrestling and triple jump.

are they small and exotic nation in sport? C`mon, maybe Austria, Portugal? Uruguay? ;)

Well they will have less then 50 athletes.    Maybe 3 medal hopefuls.  No medals in london.  7 medals all together.  I think in Olympic terms we are pretty small.

  • Latest Posts around Totallympics

    • With past precedence, a sport not in thr top 2 tiers will likely find it hard to add another discipline without dropping event. For ex. Canoeing in Paris.
    • I'm sure Kata is very historically meaningful, but it's not sport. Lots of dancing is very ritualised too. Still not sport.
    • Ok but the kata is not dancing, are a sequence of pre-established movements which have centuries and is one of the pillars of most martials arts, i cant simply equalize with an street dancing. In kata, i watch a martialist looking for make perfection, in breakdancing i watch a dancer trying to make the best choreography for a judge.
    • Is there anyone out there tracking countries that have met the Alpine Olympic standard already? There have been enough SAC races for it to be possible I think.
    • Karate obviously has lots of problems with officiating. and WKF itself is not a great organization either (most of their rule changes are dumb) but the scoring basic is very simple with only 1 or 2 rare situations.    I know in past IOC (under previous IOC presidents not the current dictator) asked WKF to find a solution, using helmets or something like that to avoid situation like the last Olympic final. and I remember WKF used it for few tournaments around 2000 (1998 Asian Games for example) but nobody (specially the athletes) didn't like it, they dropped the idea.   I totally understand Kata looks very very boring, (as boring as Surfing in my opinion) but that's the heart of karate. even if WKF is allowed to pick 1 event for the Olympics, they will pick Kata  (team kata is much better though)
    • Cross-country is a long standing WA ask. Handball was never going to get Beach, Gymnastics would defo want tumbling, but possibly prefer double mini or trampoline synchro to acrobatic. High diving SHOULD get in and Archery would be better looking at field events, but may be satisfied with the five it has.
    • Worth noting that MMA was once more or less known as 'no holds barred', the most brutal form of combat sport....but almost immediately, certain holds and techniques were barred! Eye gouging, fishhooking and, more important for this discussion "small joint manipulation" - i.e torture submissions based on breaking fingers and toes. Holds that work in te real world...but are unacceptable in the sport. Any martial art that becomes a sport compromises - what do you think boxing gloves are?   My problem with karate is following the scoring and understanding what scores and what doesn't. The action itself looks interesting, but its hard to read a context.   Under no circumstances whatsoever should we see fierce growling and staring at invisible people - Kata - ever return to the games - the only event more shambolic that B-girl Raygun. What next, Haka?
